Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Capture of Fort William and Mary: December 14 and 15, 1774 Throughout the year 1774 the people of Portsmouth and vicinity shared in full measure the unrest that was felt throughout the whole country. Much sympathy was expressed for the people of Boston, and the populace were beginning to show signs of resisting the odious domination of the British ministry. The assembly had shown a disposition to refuse to vote the necessary supplies and men for Fort William and Mary. In May a message was sent from the committee at Portsmouth to the committee at Boston, promising assistance in anything agreed upon by the colonies.2 On June 8th, Governor' Wentworth dissolved the assembly which he had from time to time adjourned to prevent action toward the appointment of delegates to a provincial congress.3 On July 4, twenty-seven-chests of tea had been quietly brought into Portsmouth. A town-meeting was immediately called. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The first organized fight of the Revolutionary War, and on December 14, 1774, the first gun of that war was fired." The fight in question was the raid on Fort William and Mary, in New Castle, New Hampshire, by New Hampshire citizens, after a rumor spread that British soldiers were coming to take possession of arms and powder located there. While no one was killed, shots were fired and people were injured. This happened four months before the battle of Lexington and Concord in April of 1775. Michael Geanoulis has acquired extensive period reports describing the event, and with Shots Not Heard Round the World he shines a light on a long-forgotten piece of American history.

Book Historic Powder Houses of New England

Download or read book Historic Powder Houses of New England written by Matthew E. Thomas and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the turbulent history of colonial New England, more than two hundred powder houses were built to store gunpowder, guns and armaments. Even the spark from a metal shoe nail could ignite their contents, so they often sat in remote sections of town. These volatile storehouses played a vital role in earning and preserving American independence. It was, after all, to a powder house in Concord, Massachusetts, that the British army marched in April 1775 to seize colonists' gunpowder. The British were thwarted, and the colonists' defense of the powder house ignited the Revolutionary War. Add to this the duels, murders, public hangings and tragic explosions that checkered the history of these structures, and the reader will discover a fascinating and forgotten aspect of our New England heritage. Using meticulous research, Matthew Thomas narrates the colorful histories of New England's powder houses as he resurrects their historical significance in early American history.

Book On the Road North of Boston

Download or read book On the Road North of Boston written by Donna-Belle Garvin and published by UPNE. This book was released on 2003 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1988 by the New Hampshire Historical Society, and long since sought after, On the Road North of Boston is back in print. This richly illustrated, entertaining book is an invaluable resource for New Hampshire residents and students of the state's history alike. Nine extensively researched and meticulously prepared chapters depict historic taverns and tavern society of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century New England. Donna-Belle and James Garvin vividly reconstruct the physical landscape: the taverns themselves, the network of roads, travel conditions, traffic and commerce. They immerse the reader in the contemporary tavern atmosphere: encounters with fellow travelers, food, drink, entertainment, and hospitality in its earliest incarnations "on the road north of Boston." On the Road North of Boston contains rare and wonderful black-and-white illustrations of authentic tavern signs and furnishings, broadsides advertising tavern entertainments, early photographs and drawings of tavern buildings, road signs, vehicles, and bridges, portraits of tavern keepers, stage drivers, and itinerant performers. This book offers modern New England residents and travelers rich chronicles and visions of an age long past.
