Book excerpt: A riveting account of the World War II naval career of the man who did more to win the Battle of the Atlantic than any other officer at sea. Captain F. J. Walker, RN, dedicated his life to defeating the Germans—and Karl Dönitz, Führer der U-Boote, in particular—by containing the U-boats, wearing them down, and sending them back to their bunkers. He was a formidable figure and one of the greatest fighting captains in the Royal Navy, sinking twenty U-boats. For this he was awarded a CB and four DSOs. A month after D-Day, exhausted by his continuous actions at sea against the enemy and his successful exertions to keep the U-boats out of the English Channel to ensure the safe passage of the Allied landings at D-day, he went ashore in Liverpool after a patrol. His ships and the men he had trained and inspired were already back at sea when he died on the 9 July, 1944, aged 48. His ships went on to sink another nine U-boats, bringing his flotillas’ total up to twenty-nine, before the U-boat fleet finally surrendered. Fifteen of which were sunk by Walker’s own ship, HMS Starling.

Download or read book The Sea Warriors written by Richard Woodman and published by Seaforth Publishing. This book was released on 2014-02-28 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sea Warriors is the true story of the great frigate captains of the Nelsonic Royal Navy who spent long and arduous years away from their homes fighting for king and country, to win and hold control of the seas. Richard Woodman skilfully dissects the events of the war years, focussing on the cruiser war, that war between opposing frigates which entailed the blockade of enemy ports, the interception of enemy trade and the protection of Britain's merchant ships. The whole magnificent sweep of this great struggle is set against its political background of the Napoleonic wars and the sea war with America. With this narrative come an extraordinary array of young, daring and hugely skilled frigate captains whose ability to grasp the chances offered by war made them household names in this savage age. Some, like Warren, Pellew, Cochrane and Collingwood, are still renowned; others are here rescued from under the shadow of Nelson as the author recounts their brave and brilliant exploits. rnAs well as the thrilling accounts of sea battles and single-ship actions, the author describes the darker side to life at sea – the constant danger and harsh discipline, the wearying monotony of sea-keeping, the scourges of disease and the occasional outbreaks of mutiny. All this is brought together in a stirring narrative by one of the country's finest naval writers.

Book excerpt: At the height of the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, Captain George Sotos became the first and only American military commander in history to set his facility at DEFCON 1 in readiness for nuclear war. And what a facility it was - a top secret command center, buried under a Hawaiian pineapple field. Breaking a nearly 60-year silence, Sotos recounts those agonizing days, along with his desperate plan to shelter as many civilians as possible from the nuclear-armed Soviet missiles that would obliterate human life on the island of Oahu. He tells, too, of the command center's inner workings, its pioneering use of computers for military command and control, and the key item on his resumé that tipped one of the U.S. Navy's most powerful admirals to hire him for the job: previous command of a Destroyer. Emerging from World War II as a combat-proven leader, Captain Sotos continues in Flagship Captain the story of his remarkable naval career, begun in the companion book, Living With the Torpedo - now used as a teaching text at the US Naval Academy. His lessons of leadership and ship-handling, in war and in peace, are as timeless as the sea.

Download or read book Red Star Under the Baltic written by Viktor Korzh and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2005-01-19 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rare memoir of underwater warfare in the treacherous Baltic. Red Star Under The Baltic is the gripping memoir of a Soviet submariner during his years at sea in the Baltic during the Second World War. Not only is this a superb record of the appalling conditions endured on these basic craft, but a very human account detailing the comradeship and tensions among the crew as they operated in the most life-threatening conditions. Viktor Korzh vividly describes the many actions that he and his comrades were involved in. Many of these were successful, and Korzh witnessed numerous engagements and sinkings of German shipping. However, it was by no means a one-sided contest, and there were some horrifyingly close calls. The comparatively shallow waters of the Baltic were less than ideal for submarine warfare. Perhaps the most dangerous and dramatic moment came when his submarine became entangled in netting. After frantic efforts, they just managed to extricate themselves before being depth-charged. Another constant threat was of mechanical malfunction. It is extremely rare to have a totally authentic Russian account like this one, which has been superbly translated into English. It is a thrilling memoir, filled with nonstop action and underwater danger. Previously published as Reserve of Strength
