Book Radio s Captain Midnight

Download or read book Radio s Captain Midnight written by Stephen A. Kallis, Jr. and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2004-10-05 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the horror and conflict of World War II, a fictional radio character named Captain Midnight stormed his way into the consciousness of American radio listeners. Captain Midnight (a.k.a. Charles J. Albright) was a vigorous, mature figure whom listeners could easily perceive defending their United States. The scripts, well written and expertly plotted, had a wide appeal--from excited children and their Secret Squadron Code-O-Graphs to U.S. Army Air Corps flight crews. But to fans (then and now) of the original 15-minute serial adventures, the "real" Captain Midnight retired when the show went to 30 minutes, replaced actor Ed Prentiss, and simplified the writing and plotting. Using facts, details and events from those original early radio scripts of Captain Midnight, the author has constructed a "biography" of the great wartime aviation hero, covering his origins and adventures. Concluding the work are thorough appendices that discuss Secret Squadron equipment, aircraft and rocketry; cryptology and code-cracking in the series; and Captain Midnight's portrayal in various media (books, radio, television, serials, comics and newspaper strips).

Book excerpt: You Can't See It, but it's there, hidden in your home PC. A threat so potent it could destroy massive amounts of data and shut down power plants, fuel supplies, space satellites, the armed forces, millions of computers, and even parts of the Internet. A virtually undetectable but devastating new weapon is cyberwarfare, the next wave of terrorism, and it could be launched from your very own computer. Thousands of computer super-viruses, monster worms, and zombies created by terrorists and rogue governments are the new tools of war with the potential for catastrophic results. In this chilling account, military expert and on-air analyst James F. Dunnigan sounds the alarm on what could be the nation's next surprise attack -- a cyber Pearl Harbor just waiting to happen. Every day, there are warnings of computer viruses and Internet weaknesses with the potential to disrupt society. Most are the work of amateur hackers. But consider also the super zombies, military-grade computer weapons being created by government cyberwar units. Virtually undetectable, they have the power to destroy everything, lethally spread via the Internet, and hide on home computers, waiting to be unleashed. Despite constant warnings about our cyber vulnerability and billions of dollars spent defending our networks, the risk of catastrophic cyber attacks continues to grow. Now, Dunnigan explains the rules of cyberwar -- what it is, what could happen, and how to protect yourself from becoming a pawn. From real-life attack scenarios to explanations of monster viruses, from cyberwarriors to what forces pose the most dangerous threats, Dunnigan offers clear, concise information for fighting back against a phantom enemy that may be the deadliest we've ever known. Book excerpt: In the early days of television, suburban families welcomed TV into their homes as an electronic babysitter that would also teach their children about the world. Children's programming soon came to play a key role in the development of mass culture, promoting the shared interests, norms and vocabulary through which children interact with peers and define themselves as a cohort. This social history examines the forces driving the development of children's television in the U.S., from its inception to the present. Analyses of iconic programs reveal how they influenced our concept of childhood.

Book Into the Jungle

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jimmy Kugler
  • Publisher : Univ. Press of Mississippi
  • Release : 2023-01-27
  • ISBN : 1496842855
  • Pages : 251 pages

Download or read book Into the Jungle written by Jimmy Kugler and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2023-01-27 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Near the end of World War II and after, a small-town Nebraska youth, Jimmy Kugler, drew more than a hundred double-sided sheets of comic strip stories. Over half of these six-panel tales retold the Pacific War as fought by “Frogs” and “Toads,” humanoid creatures brutally committed to a kill-or-be-killed struggle. The history of American youth depends primarily on adult reminiscences of their own childhoods, adult testimony to the lives of youth around them, or surmises based on at best a few creative artifacts. The survival then of such a large collection of adolescent comic strips from America’s small-town Midwest is remarkable. Michael Kugler reproduces the never-before-published comics of his father’s adolescent imagination as a microhistory of American youth in that formative era. Also included in Into the Jungle! A Boy's Comic Strip History of World War II are the likely comic book models for these stories and inspiration from news coverage in newspapers, radio, movies, and newsreels. Kugler emphasizes how US propaganda intended to inspire patriotic support for the war gave this young artist a license for his imagined violence. In a context of progressive American educational reform, these violent comic stories, often in settings modeled on the artist’s small Nebraska town, suggests a form of adolescent rebellion against moral conventions consistent with comic art’s reputation for “outsider” or countercultural expressions. Kugler also argues that these comics provide evidence for the transition in American taste from war stories to the horror comics of the late 1940s and early 1950s. Kugler’s thorough analysis of his father’s adolescent art explains how a small-town boy from the plains distilled the popular culture of his day for an imagined war he could fight on his audacious, even shocking terms.
