Download or read book Big Appetites written by Christopher Boffoli and published by Workman Publishing Company. This book was released on 2013-09-10 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to a world where little people have big personalities. A world that’s upside down and yet weirdly, wonderfully real. A world where Lilliputian thieves poach strawberry seeds. Where it takes a guy with a jackhammer to pop open pistachios. Where skaters fall into a crack in the crème brûlée, and teddy bear cookies congregate with evil intent. Marrying inspired photographs of real food and tiny people with equally inspired captions, photographer Christopher Boffoli creates a smart, funny, quirky vision of what it means to play with your food. The scenes are hilarious and outlandish— a farmer shovels a pasture full of cow pies, aka chocolate chips; hikers pause at a rest stop to take in a magical mushroom forest. And the captions surprise with their cleverness and emotional truth. Of the proudly gesticulating little chef amid the macarons: “Right on cue, Philippe stepped up to take all of the credit.” Of the tiny bather up to her chin in waves of blue Jell-O: “In her continuing search for a husband, Gladys decided it was best to put herself in situations where she needed to be rescued.” Of the broad-shouldered technician spreading condiments on a hot dog: “Gary always uses too much mustard. But no one can say so. It’s a union thing.” Happiness, hope, adventure, pride, love, greed, menace, solitude—it’s our world, seen through a singularly unique and funny lens, in more than 100 scenes from breakfast through dessert.

Book Time s a Marchin

Download or read book Time s a Marchin written by Michael Viola and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-02-07 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mike Viola’s work has universal appeal, having as its subject the daily events and situations that touch the lives of people everywhere. During his long career with The Philadelphia Inquirer, he met and conquered the challenge of every assignment. In this publications, twelve categories and approximately 350 photographs are presented to give the reader insight into the scope of Mike’s work. Even in what sometimes seemed like an “ordinary” assignment became the extraordinary front page photograph in the hands (and heart) of this master photographer. The photographs in this volume were taken by staff photographer Mike Viola for The Philadelphia Inquirer from 1964 to 1988. As they sipped their morning coffee, readers were accustomed to seeing the familiar byline under a photograph that, indeed needed no byline. Whatever the subject, there was no mistaken his inimitable style. Aside from their newsworthy content, Mike’s black and white prints are perfect studies in form, contrast, mood and balance. When he was just 13 and living in rural Brazos County, Texas, Mike received a small Kodak camera. He looked through its viewfinder and clicked the shutter, but had no idea the role it would play in his life. Four years later the Navy offered him an opportunity to serve as a photographer’s striker aboard the USS Miami and the click of that small Kodak camera resounded again and again throughout a career dedicated to excellence. Mike Viola served in the Navy from 1944 to 1947. He photographed activity in the Pacific and participated in Operation Crossroads aboard the carrier USS Saidor as photographic specialist in connection with the Bikini Atomic Bomb tests in July 1946. In 1964, Mike won the Look Magazine Sports Photo Award and throughout his twenty-five years as a staff photographer with The Philadelphia Inquirer, has won numerous awards given by the Press Photographers Association of Philadelphia, The Pennsylvania Press Photographers Association, the Pennsylvania Newspaper Publishers Association, the Associated Press Managing Editors of Pennsylvania, the New Jersey Press Association, the National Headliners Awards and the Society of Professional Journalist, Sigma Delta Chi. Mike was also a member of The Inquirer staff team awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1980, for their report on the Three Mile Island accident. Mike Viola is retired and lives in Philadelphia with his wife Kitty of 62 years, and their two Pomeranians, Coco and Bindi.

Meet Kevin Clash, the man behind the Muppet and the unassuming heart and soul of Elmo. At last, the puppeteer who has performed Elmo for nearly twenty years comes out from behind the stage to share his story. Weaving together his memories of growing up with the life lessons gained from his furry red alter ego, Kevin reveals himself to be as caring, and as eager to grow and learn and love, as the very special character he brings to life. You will discover how young Kevin honed his talent entertaining the kids in his mother’s home day care with puppets he made from slippers and coat liners; how, as a struggling young artist, he realized his dream to meet and then work for his idol, Muppet creator Jim Henson; and how each and every day of performing Elmo reinforces for him what is most important in life. As Kevin has been inspired by Elmo, now we can all learn from his furry red ways. Kevin’s (and Elmo’s) thoughts on love, creativity, friendship, and optimism remind us of life’s simple truths and ultimately encourage us all to be a little bit more like Elmo—to live with joy, to love more easily, and to laugh more often.
