Book Regulating Non Muslim Communities in the Seventeenth Century Ottoman Empire

Download or read book Regulating Non Muslim Communities in the Seventeenth Century Ottoman Empire written by Radu Dipratu and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-01 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume investigates how the peace and trade agreements, better known as capitulations, regulated Catholics in the Ottoman Empire. As one of the many non-Muslim groups that made up Ottoman society, Catholic communities were scattered around the Empire, from the Hungarian plains to the Aegean Islands and Palestine. Besides the more famous cases of the French capitulations of 1604 and 1673, this work explores the evolution of often ignored religious privileges granted by the Ottoman sultans to the Catholic rulers of Venice, the Holy Roman Empire, and Poland-Lithuania, as well as to the Protestant Dutch Republic and Orthodox Russia. While focused on the seventeenth century, precedents of the fifteenth century and later developments in the eighteenth century are also considered. This volume shows that capitulations essentially addressed the presence and religious activities of Catholic laymen and clerics and the status of churches. Furthermore, it demonstrates that European translations, the primary sources of previous scholarly works, offered a flawed perspective over the status of Catholics under Muslim rule. By drawing heavily on both original Ottoman-Turkish texts and previously unpublished archival material, this volume is an ideal resource for all scholars interested in the history of Catholicism in the seventeenth-century Ottoman Empire.

MUHAMMED THE SECOND, SURNAME ) FATIH, * OR THE GREAT.--SEVENTH REIGN. Muhammed learned the death of his father at Magnesia in Lydia, whither he had heen sent as governor. The young prince had but just arrived in his province, when the Vizirs dispatched a message for him to come and take possession of the throne. The love for Amurath, and funeral honours to his memory, which mingled with the welcome of the new monarch, is touchingly described in Cantemir. On his arrival near Adrianople, Muhammed was met by all the persons of any distinction, at a mile from "that city; who then dismounting, they walked on foot, the Sultan and his attendants marching in the middle. When they had advanced half way, they stopped, closing their lips to pre - serve the greater silence, * then set up a loud cry, mixed with tears. On this, Muhammed and his train alighted, and after the example of the rest, * Fatih, in Arabic, signifies the opener, or vanquisher; a title given him on account of his taking Constantinople. The Christian historians denominate him, The Great. filled the air with groans and sighs. The grandees saluted him by kissing his hand, then mounted on horseback, and, having conducted him to the gate of his palace, retired to their houses. The first act of Muhammed, after he ascended the throne, in pursuance of the fierce and sanguinary policy of his race, was to send the Aga of the janizaries to strangle his brother, an infant but eight months old, whom his father had by the princess of Sinope; he also obliged her to marry Isbak, * or Isaac, her father's slave, to whom she had an aversion; and afterwards, as if to disclaim these violences, he put to death the Aga who had been the instrument of his cruelty. After this, at the...

Book excerpt: The Ottoman Empire was one of the most important non-Western states to survive from medieval to modern times, and played a vital role in European and global history. It continues to affect the peoples of the Middle East, the Balkans and central and western Europe to the present day. This new survey examines the major trends during the latter years of the empire; it pays attention to gender issues and to hotly-debated topics such as the treatment of minorities. In this second edition, Donald Quataert has updated his lively and authoritative text, revised the bibliographies, and included brief biographies of major figures on the Byzantines and the post Ottoman Middle East. This accessible narrative is supported by maps, illustrations and genealogical and chronological tables, which will be of help to students and non-specialists alike. Book French Revolutionaries in the Ottoman Empire

Download or read book French Revolutionaries in the Ottoman Empire written by Pascal Firges and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of the French Revolution reached far beyond the confines of France itself. The Ottoman Empire, ancient ally and major trading partner of France, was not immune from the repercussions of the 'Age of Revolutions', especially since it was home to permanent French communities with a certain legal autonomy. French Revolutionaries in the Ottoman Empire examines, for the first time, the political and cultural impact of the French Revolution on Franco-Ottoman relations, as well as on the French communities of the Ottoman Empire. The modern interpretation of revolutionary ideological expansionism is strongly influenced by the famous propaganda decree of 19 November 1792 which promised 'fraternity and help to all peoples who wish to recover their liberty', as well as the well-studied efforts to export the Revolution into the territories conquered by the revolutionary armies and to the various Sister Republics. Against all expectations, however, French revolutionaries in the Ottoman Empire exhibited neither a 'crusading mentality' nor a heightened readiness to use force in order to achieve ideological goals. Instead, as this volume shows, in matters of diplomacy as well as in the administration of French expatriate communities, revolutionary policies were applied in an extremely circumspect fashion. The focus on the effects of the French regime change outside of France offers valuable new insights into the revolutionary process itself, which will revise common assumptions about French revolutionary diplomacy. In addition, Pascal Firges takes a close look at the establishment of the new political culture of the French Revolution within the transcultural context of the French expatriate communities of the Ottoman Empire, which serves as a thought-provoking point of comparison for the emergence and development of French revolutionary political culture.

Download or read book The Subjects of Ottoman International Law written by Lâle Can and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2020-10-13 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The core of this edited volume originates from a special issue of the Journal of the Ottoman and Turkish Studies Association (JOTSA) that goes well beyond the special issue to incorporate the stimulating discussions and insights of two Middle East Studies Association conference roundtables and the important work of additional scholars in order to create a state-of-the-field volume on Ottoman sociolegal studies, particularly regarding Ottoman international law from the eighteenth century to the end of the empire. It makes several important contributions to Ottoman and Turkish studies, namely, by introducing these disciplines to the broader fields of trans-imperial studies, comparative international law, and legal history. Combining the best practices of diplomatic history and history from below to integrate the Ottoman Empire and its subjects into the broader debates of the nineteenth-century trans-imperial history this unique volume represents the exciting work and cutting-edge scholarship on these topics that will continue to shape the field in years to come.
