Download or read book Governing Capital written by Sylvia Maxfield and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-15 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does international financial integration affect development in newly industrializing countries? Sylvia Maxfield offers a challenging interpretation of the Mexican political economy in light of this complex question. In an increasingly internationalized world, she argues, capital-controlling economic policies can have benefits that, especially for the newly industrializing Latin American countries addressed here, outweigh the efficiency costs of government intervention.
Download or read book Short Term Capital Flows and Economic Crises written by Stephany Griffith-Jones and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2001-02-01 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The currency crises that engulfed East Asian economies in 1997 and Mexico in 1994 - and their high development costs - raise a serious concern about the net benefits for developing countries of large flows of potentially reversible short-term international capital. Written by senior policy-makers and academics, the contributions to this volume examine in depth the macroeconomic and other policy dilemmas confronting public authorities in the emerging economies as they deal with short-term capital movements, especially in the period before the outbreak of these crises. The studies are based on comparative case studies of key emerging economies. Valuable insights are also derived from contrasts between the East Asian, Latin American, African, and European experiences, between the financial and real effects of financial flows, and between private and public responsibilities in managing financial markets. The great value of the chapters in this volume is that they analytically identify the weaknesses in both domestic and international capital market regimes. The recommendations derived from this analysis apply to the development of financial markets in developing countries, the monitoring and regulation of mutual funds in source countries, and the future development of international capital markets. They will make an important contribution both to the discussion of national policies and of a new international financial architechture.

Download or read book Macroeconomics in Emerging Markets written by Peter J. Montiel and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-04-10 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a rigorous, yet nonmathematical analysis of key macroeconomic issues faced by emerging economies. The first part develops an analytical framework that can be used as a workhorse model to study short-run macroeconomic issues of stabilization and adjustment in such economies, comparable to the IS-LM framework widely used in intermediate-level macroeconomics textbooks for industrial countries. The rest of the book considers fiscal issues, financial sector issues, and issues concerning exchange rate regimes and policies. In the fiscal area, the focus is on the formulation of intertemporal policies, i.e. fiscal sustainability, seigniorage, and the roles of central bank independence and privatization of public enterprises in achieving fiscal credibility. The analysis of the financial sector examines its role in promoting welfare and growth. Finally, the book explores recent developments in the theory of appropriate exchange rate regimes and management, and provides an overview of currency crises.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chapters deal with two major issues: first, the economic, societal, ecological, and political consequences of globalization, including - but also going beyond - the identification of globalization's "winners and losers" worldwide; and second, solutions that have emerged from the current political debate to cope with the various challenges. These include, on the one hand, the creation of new global governance structures - particularly to better meet the needs of developing countries - and the fostering of a "global civil society" that might enhance the democratic legitimacy of global governance; and on the other hand, strategies to be implemented at national and regional levels, allowing states to adapt in ways that make liberalization compatible with development in poor countries and enable the rescue of the welfare state in rich countries.

Download or read book Capital City Politics in Latin America written by David J. Myers and published by Lynne Rienner Publishers. This book was released on 2002 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Latin America's new democratic regimes have decentralized, the region's capital cities - and their elected mayors - have gained increasing importance. Capital City Politics in Latin America tells the story of these cities: how they are changing operationally, how the the empowerment of mayors and other municipal institutions is exacerbating political tensions between local executives and regional and national entities, and how the cities' growing significance affects traditional political patterns throughout society. The authors weave a tapestry that illustrates the impact of local, national, and transnational power relations on the strategies available to Latin America's capital city mayors as they seek to transform their greater influence into desired actions.

Download or read book Beyond Borders The New Regionalism in Latin America written by Inter-American Development Bank and published by IDB. This book was released on 2002-10-10 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although regional integration initiatives have a long history in the world economy, these efforts have expanded significantly since the 1990s. In Latin America and the Caribbean, a wave of regional integration initiatives has included free trade areas, customs unions, and steps towards common markets. The emergence of this "new regionalism"of trade in which global and regional forces complement one another has been driven by such factors as the opening up of economies and structural reforms. This year's edition of Economic and Social Progress in Latin America explores the dimensions of integration, macroeconomic coordination, and the effects of regional integration on productivity, market access, foreign direct investment, infrastructure and income inequality. Topics include subregional integration schemes, the multilateral trade agenda launched in Doha, initiatives such as the Free Trade Area of the Americas, and interregional agreements with the European Union.

Download or read book Regulating International Business written by Sol Picciotto and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely book points the way towards a new positive regulatory framework for international investment following the failure of the Multilateral Agreement on Investment (MAI). It examines the flaws in free-market strategies underpinning the recent phase of globalization, in particular drawing out the lessons from the MAI, which was suspended in October 1998. The authors explore an alternative based on a positive regulatory framework for international business aimed at maximizing the positive contribution to development of foreign investment and minimizing its negative social and environmental impacts. The contributors include academics, researchers for non-governmental organizations, and business and trade-union representatives, writing from a combination of economic, legal and political perspectives. The book combines academic analysis with grass-roots and practical experience, and suggests concrete policy proposals.
