Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cape Cod During the last thirty years, many of the more remote and isolated sections of New England have become popular with summer tourists and cottagers. Cape Cod has shared in this invasion from visitors and yet has maintained, to a large extent, its natural out lines of landscape and many of its primitive customs. Groups of cottages have been built along the coast where formerly was only a sandy beach without any Sign of human life. The hamlets and villages of fifty years ago Truro, Chatham, Provincetown, Yar mouth - are now active towns, reaping commercial benefits from tourists. In spite of such changes, the aspects of nature and the traits of the native inhabit ants are still akin to those described by Thoreau, half a century ago, in his graphic narrative, Cape Cod. In a characteristic style, direct and vivid, he stated at the beginning the purpose of his excursions and the routes that were followed: Wishing to get a better view than I had yet had of the ocean, which, we are told, covers more than two - thirds of the globe, but of which a man who lives a few miles inland may never see any trace, more than of another world, I made a visit to Cape Cod in October, 1849, another the succeeding June, and another to Truro in July, 18 5 5; the first and last time with a single companion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pageant of Cape Cod The chief musical motif of the Pageant, the motif of the Life Saver, sounds clear and strong from the full orchestra, -proclaiming the power that conserves all life. As this is still ringing over the waters, there follows in the orchestra the sound of the open sea surging over the world. From one side sweep forward a mass of Ocean Waves, young men and women clad in the colors Of the deep sea water, surging across the Open in successive tidal movements. Then there comes to meet them another mass of waves, the Waters Of the Bay, clad in the lighter colors of the more Shallow coastal waters. The two groups in tidal motion surge up toward each other. As they meet they toss their white scarves into the air like the Spray and the foam of Splashing waves. The tides recede and come together again and again with the surf Splash and the clash of the meeting waves in the dances and in the music. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tobias O the Light: A Story of Cape Cod Old Winter wrapped in his grave clothes stalked the flats and sand dunes about the Twin Rocks Light. Spring had smiled at the grim old fellow only the day before. She would flutter back again anon to dry the longshore wastes and warm to life the scant herbage that tries its best to clothe the Cape Cod barrens. But now the wind blew and the sleet charged against the staff of the lighthouse, masking thickly the glass that defended the huge Argand lamp. Its steady ray filtered through this curtain with difficulty. Tobias Bassett pulled on his oilskins and buckled down the sou'wester over his ears preparatory to venturing upon the high gallery to scrape the clinging snow from the glass. Book excerpt: Excerpt from 1812: A Tale of Cape Cod The plight of Eastham in those days was that of many other towns on the Cape. The seafaring population of the district was utterly at the mercy of the enemy and all trade was at a stand still in consequence of the embargo on commerce. Deserted by the National and State governments, the sturdy people bore their sufferings with heroic fortitude and stubbornly resisted the invasion of their shores, now meeting the arrogant foe in deadly combat and driving him to his boats, and again, successfully matching their Wits against his might, capitulating only when further resistance appeared useless. The author has had the advantage of many years' residence in the district and the privilege and pleasure of close ao quaintance with the descendants of some of the characters in this tale, and, as an interested student of local history and tradition, his researches have instilled him with intense admiration for the virile race that first settled on this historic ground and whose indomitable perseverance and success in the face of almost in superable difficulties have won the applause of the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Cape Cod: The Land: The Men the Sea But perhaps the ultimate charm of the Cape is that, like a child, it is small enough to be loved. For the native-born, returning here in middle age, there is the delight of coming back to little things that memory had held as stupendous: a dim foreign township that used to be reached in a day's journey with carry all and pair is only five miles distant by the Lower Road; the Great Square proves to be within the swing of an hour's stroll; the a modest mid-vic torian mansion with library and drawing - room that had the remembered vista of Versailles. Yet, in their degree, this charm is free to the stranger. The Cape has a whimsical and endearing smallness: its greatest amplitude can boast but a few miles; and the most tortuous wood road that promised a day's excursion through an uncharted wilderness will soon show you, from some gentle eminence, the true north to be reckoned by the curve of the bay. Download or read book Cape Cod and All Along Shore Stories written by Charles Nordhoff and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-15 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cape Cod and All Along Shore Stories: Stories The stories collected in this volume have been printed at different times in Hamer's Magazine, except one which appeared in the Atlantic Monthly. Collections of stories like this, I have noticed, are commonly pub lished at the earnest solicitation of friends, or to gratify the desires of an amiable but undiscriminating public. To prevent misunderstanding in the present case, it is perhaps well to say. That the public is guiltless in respect to this volume, and that no fond friend has ever expressed even a willingness to have my stories assume this more enduring form - except the publishers, who, it will be readily believed, have no especial desire to see the book permanently on their shelves. I have noticed that it is customary with writers, when they collect their shorter tales, to set them into one gen eral story, which serves as a frame-work to the smallpieces, and furnishes a name for the volume, such as the Queen of Hearts of Mr. Wilkie Collins, and Miss Edwards's Miss Carew. In this way a story writer gives his collection the appearance, at first sight, of what is call ed a novel. It naturally occurred to me to follow this fash ion, which has the advantage of deceiving purchasers, who buy what they imagine from the title and chapter heads to be a novel, and do not discover, until they get home, that what they took to be a fat chicken is only a small basket full of stale eggs. Buti refrained, for two reasons: lst., I think it wrong to practice such a-cheat upon an unofl'ending and confiding public; and, 2d1y., I tried in vain to invent a tale which should serve me as. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cape Cod, the Right Arm of Massachusetts: An Historical Narrative That Cape Cod is the Right Arm of Massachusetts, was not said with reference alone to its physical characteristics. Regard, undoubtedly, was had to the important and beneficent transactions which had been enacted in its borders and participated in by its people. No part of the country has had a more intimate relation to the great events on this continent during the last two and a half centuries than Cape Cod and its inhabitants. It is with the purpose of bringing within the limits of a single volume a full and continuous record of the history of this people, and making our fellow-citizens better acquainted with the details of that varied and interesting story, that the author has gathered, from many sources, the scattered threads of this narrative.
