Book Increasing Capacity for Stewardship of Oceans and Coasts

Download or read book Increasing Capacity for Stewardship of Oceans and Coasts written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2008-02-04 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine environments support the livelihoods, economies, and quality of life for communities around the world. But growth of coastal populations and increasing demands on marine resources are putting the future of ocean and coastal resources at risk through impacts such as overfishing, wetland drainage, climate change, and pollution of coastal waters. Given these demands, it is vital to build capacity-the people, the institutions, and technology and tools-needed to manage ocean resources. Unfortunately, many capacity building efforts focus on specific projects rather than on capacity building as goal unto itself, resulting in activities that are not funded or sustained past the typically short project lifetime. This book finds that the most successful capacity-building efforts meet the needs of a specific locale or region based on periodic assessments and include plans to maintain and expand capacity after the project ends. The report recommends ways that governments and organizations can help strengthen marine protection and management capacity, including conducting periodic program assessments, making plans to sustain funding, and developing leadership and political will. The book was produced at the request of Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, the President's Circle of the National Academies, the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the National Science Foundation, the Marisla Foundation, and the Curtis and Edith Munson Foundation.

Book Sustaining Nonprofit Performance

Download or read book Sustaining Nonprofit Performance written by Paul C. Light and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2004-08-31 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The nonprofit sector survives because it has a self-exploiting work force: wind it up and it will do more with less until it just runs out. But at some point, the spring must break." America's nonprofit organizations face a difficult present and an uncertain future. Money is tight. Workloads are heavy, employee turnover is high, and charitable donations have not fully rebounded from the recent economic downturn. Media and political scrutiny remains high, and public confidence in nonprofits has yet to recover from its sharp decline in the wake of well-publicized scandals. In a recent survey, only 14 percent of respondents believed that nonprofits did a very good job of spending money wisely; nearly half said that nonprofit leaders were paid too much, compared to 8 percent who said they earned too little. Yet the nonprofit sector has never played a more important role in American life. As a generation of nonprofit executives and board members approaches retirement, it becomes increasingly important to ensure that their organizations are prepared to continue their missions—that they are built to last in a supremely challenging environment. Paul Light, renowned expert on public service and nonprofit management, strongly argues for capacity-building measures as a way to sustain and improve the efforts of the nonprofit sector. With innovative data and insightful analysis, he demonstrates how nonprofits that invest in technology, training, and strategic planning can successfully advance their goals and restore public faith in their mission and capabilities. He explains the ways in which restoration of that faith is critical to the survival of nonprofits—another important reason for improving and then sustaining performance. Organizations that invest adequately in their infrastructure and long-term planning are the ones that will survive and continue to serve.

Book Allies or Adversaries

Download or read book Allies or Adversaries written by Jennifer N. Brass and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-08-18 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Governments throughout the developing world have witnessed a proliferation of non-governmental, non-profit organizations (NGOs) providing services like education, healthcare and piped drinking water in their territory. In Allies or Adversaries, Jennifer N. Brass explains how these NGOs have changed the nature of service provision, governance, and state development in the early twenty-first century. Analyzing original surveys alongside interviews with public officials, NGOs and citizens, Brass traces street-level government-NGO and state-society relations in rural, town and city settings of Kenya. She examines several case studies of NGOs within Africa in order to demonstrate how the boundary between purely state and non-state actors blurs, resulting in a very slow turn toward more accountable and democratic public service administration. Ideal for scholars, international development practitioners, and students interested in global or international affairs, this detailed analysis provides rich data about NGO-government and citizen-state interactions in an accessible and original manner.

Book Non Governmental Organisation Capacity Building in Developing Countries During Crisis Situations

Download or read book Non Governmental Organisation Capacity Building in Developing Countries During Crisis Situations written by Folkert Pierrick Jongsma and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seemingly self-explanatory but in fact highly complex, "capacity building" is a popular concept which purpose is basically to describe and think the effort of strengthening an entities [sic] ability to allow it to reach its goal. Used in general in a context relating to civil society or non-profit organisations, it has gained a particular popularity in the field of development and is often regarded as a possible response to humanitarian crises. -- This research's purpose is to identify how NGOs conduct capacity building during crisis situations in developing countries. Based on the literature, the present research establishes first an analytical framework enabling to properly identify capacity building efforts. The framework is then applied to several cases studies to explore how NGOs build capacity during crisis situations and to reflect on the utility of the concept.
