Book Anthology of Religious Poetry from the Mexican Inquisition Trials of 16th Century CryptoJews

This book was released on 2020-12-08 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complete Collection of Poetry and Prayers from the Carvajal Clan of Jews in Colonial Mexico City Presented in Spanish with Full English Translation Jewish Martyrs – Burned at the Stake for the Laws of Moses All of the Poetry from the Original Inquisition Trial Transcripts of Luis de Carvajal, el Mozo Leonor de Andrada Isabel Rodríguez Justa Mendez Francesca de Carvajal Manuel de Lucena and Leonor de Cáceres With excerpts from the trials of Sebastián Rodríguez, Lic. Manuel López de Morales, Francisco López Blandón, and others. How pleasant it is, how delightful, much more than anybody knows to imagine to follow this very glorious path whereby God commands us to walk; the whole law of God is very pleasant, and he who dares to blaspheme, cursed will they be in that life where there is no certain time nor measure... Keeping Judaism Alive After 100 Years in Exile A century after being expelled from Portugal, cryptoJews in Mexico, false converts to Christianity, could not speak of their beliefs for fear of becoming embroiled in the imprisonment, torture, and death in flames that characterized the Inquisition. Without written texts, the Jewish liturgy lost, clans of cryptoJews created a unique body of religious poetry, connecting them to the Laws of Moses, seeking redemption from sin, or hoping for an escape from their embittered lives. The Carvajal clan was led by Luis el Mozo, an alumbrado, a mystic, and his Judaizing sisters. Once discovered to be secretly practicing Judaism, years of suffering at the hands of the Inquisitors were meticulously recorded in the transcripts of their long demeaning trials. The Carvajal's friends, spouses, children and grandchildren were implicated as Judaizers, with many being reconciled by the Church to secular authorities to be burned alive at massive public ceremonies. The burning of Luis and his sisters was the main attraction for cheering crowds at the auto de fé of 1596 in Mexico City. The cruelty of the Inquisitors was matched by their attention to legal detail and testimonies made at trial. Buried within thousands of pages of transcripts, hiding in library special collections of rare books around the world are the only remnants of the religious poetry that sustained cryptoJews hiding in Mexico. Anthology uncovers these hidden treasures! Keeping Judaism Alive Today, 400 Years Later There is intrinsic historical value in preserving this richest cultural remnant of a Jewish sect from the risk and obscurity of single-copy documents in library special collections. The poems are moving and beautiful, depicting a deep faith in the Lord and a constant striving to live more virtuously to gain His favor. Poems from the tongues of Jewish martyrs, that gave up everything, including their lives, withstanding torture and years of imprisonment, but refusing to abandon the Laws of Moses.

Book Sor Juana M sica

Download or read book Sor Juana M sica written by Pamela H. Long and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her lost treatise on music which she titled El caracol, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz addressed the image of the spiral as a metaphor for musical harmony, an image which she distilled in one of her romances. Singing in the choir of the Templo de San Jerónimo, Sor Juana and the other nuns of her convent were raising the tone of their musica humana to be in accord with the music of the heavenly choirs, which the nuns were imitating in their singing. Octavio Paz theorizes a «triple interés» in music in Sor Juana's works: «práctico, teórico, filósofico». Numerous poems allude to the theoretical and philosophical problems of music, resulting in many levels of metaphor and metonym concerning music, especially in the loas and villancicos. Not only does Sor Juana's work address the metaphysical aspects of music, the musica speculative so popular in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, but it broaches important questions on the practical applications of new theories of musical harmony: the musica practica. A talented poet, playwright, scientist, and mathematician, Sor Juana also explored musical instruments and theory. Sor Juana/Música investigates the musical aspects of Sor Juana's literary achievements, exploring the dense metaphorical interplay of musical and literary images, and places her works within the musicological ambience of her time. With its interdisciplinary approach, Sor Juana/Música contributes not only to the understanding of Sor Juana's literary works, but also to the degree that literature underpins the other arts as it illuminates the musicological times in which she lived.

Book Sing My Whole Life Long

Download or read book Sing My Whole Life Long written by Craig Smith and published by UNM Press. This book was released on 2007-05-01 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in Minnesota and raised in Chicago, Jenny Vincent was educated at a progressive private school and Vassar College. Introduced to international folk music at an early age, she remains a performer and champion of this "music of the people." In 1936, Jenny and her first husband visited northern New Mexico at the invitation of D. H. Lawrence's widow. Enchanted with the place and its people, they purchased a ranch that has been Jenny's home ever since. Jenny believed strongly in social advocacy, which she expressed through song. She performed with such luminaries as Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, Malvina Reynolds, and Earl Robinson, all social activists who used music as a voice for world peace, civil liberties, and human rights. Jenny and her second husband supported such causes as the Salt of the Earth strike, Native American rights, and the rising Chicano movement. Through it all Jenny raised a family and continued her music. In her nineties, Jenny continues performing, and in 2006 was honored by the University of New Mexico and the New Mexico State Historic Preservation Division for her many decades as a prominent cultural activist.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is Bilingual (English and Spanish) Prologue: This is the Golden Gate of Triumph when written without hesitation with the hope that readers will find on each page a fountain of spiritual teachings that do not affect the faith of those who live in the Love of God. There are two kinds of writers: Those who write for life and those who write for the soul. At each point, there is the suspense of joy that produces a fountain of clear, unbound knowledge without the hypocrisy that often clouds the intrinsic form of spontaneity. Here we are not making a worldly analysis but a spiritual euphoria that will leave in each life the balm enough to transform the soul. These verses, like this index, are not mine; they are inspired by God in my long nights of Worship and Hope. I know there are and will be great skeptics because to believe in it, one needs to be close to God and to understand that divine power cannot be wrong by giving the world what is not the soul’s balm. “Here, end my words, and I begin my poems,” says the Lord.

Book Hymns and Hymnody Historical and Theological Introductions Volume 3

Download or read book Hymns and Hymnody Historical and Theological Introductions Volume 3 written by Mark A. Lamport and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-08-01 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hymns and the music the church sings in worship are tangible means of expressing worship. And while worship is one of, if not the central functions of the church along with mission, service, education, justice, and compassion, and occupies a prime focus of our churches, a renewed sense of awareness to our theological presuppositions and cultural cues must be maintained to ensure a proper focus in worship. Hymns and Hymnody: Historical and Theological Introductions is a sixty-chapter, three-volume introductory textbook describing the most influential hymnists, liturgists, and musical movements of the church. This academically grounded resource evaluates both the historical and theological perspectives of the major hymnists and composers who have impacted the church over the course of twenty centuries. Volume 1 explores the early church and concludes with the Renaissance era hymnists. Volume 2 begins with the Reformation and extends to the eighteenth-century hymnists and liturgists. Volume 3 engages nineteenth century hymnists to the contemporary movements of the twenty-first century. Each chapter contains these five elements: historical background, theological perspectives communicated in their hymns/compositions, contribution to liturgy and worship, notable hymns, and bibliography. The mission of Hymns and Hymnody is (1) to provide biographical data on influential hymn writers for students and interested laypeople, and (2) to provide a theological analysis of what these composers have communicated in the theology of their hymns. We believe it is vital for those involved in leading the worship of the church to recognize that what they communicate is in fact theology. This latter aspect, we contend, is missing—yet important—in accessible formats for the current literature.

Book Music and Identity in Venezuela

Download or read book Music and Identity in Venezuela written by Adriana Ponce and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-04-22 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Venezuelan music has remained largely unnoticed in the academic English literature. Boasting a tremendous wealth of traditions, it displays influences from the Spanish, indigenous, and enslaved African communities that populated the territory from the “conquest” on and offers a tremendous diversity of genres and styles that vary by region, occasion, time, and sometimes ethnic influences. This book presents critical discussions of some of these traditions in connection with the issue of identity. The discussions capture country and city life, illustrate foundational myths, bring secular traditions closer to Christianity, explore surviving cultural strategies, et cetera. They also analyze the interface between Venezuelan identity and European classical music. The book displays diversity of perspectives in terms of (a) subject matter, as it includes traditional and concert musics; (b) disciplines on which the inquiries are grounded, as it includes essays by scholars and artists from musicology, performance, composition, history, cultural history, and education; and (c) epistemological approaches, as it includes critical, historical, and ethnographic research.
