Book Carbonate Reservoir Characterization A Geologic Engineering Analysis Part I

Download or read book Carbonate Reservoir Characterization A Geologic Engineering Analysis Part I written by G.C. Dominguez and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1992-01-17 with total page 659 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book integrates those critical geologic aspects of reservoir formation and occurrence with engineering aspects of reservoirs, and presents a comprehensive treatment of the geometry, porosity and permeability evolution, and producing characteristics of carbonate reservoirs. The three major themes discussed are: • the geometry of carbonate reservoirs and relationship to original depositional facies distributions • the origin and types of porosity and permeability systems in carbonate reservoirs and their relationship to post-depositional diagenesis • the relationship between depositional and diagenetic facies and producing characteristics of carbonate reservoirs, and the synergistic geologic-engineering approach to the exploitation of carbonate reservoirs. The intention of the volume is to fully aquaint professional petroleum geologists and engineers with an integrated geologic and engineering approach to the subject. As such, it presents a unique critical appraisal of the complex parameters that affect the recovery of hydrocarbon resources from carbonate rocks. The book may also be used as a text in petroleum geology and engineering courses at the advanced undergraduate and graduate levels.

Book New Perspectives in Basin Analysis

Download or read book New Perspectives in Basin Analysis written by Karen L. Kleinspehn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the extensive field of earth sciences, with its many subdisciplines, the trans fer of knowledge is primarily established via personal communication, during meetings, by reading journal articles, or by consulting books. Because more information is available than can be assimilated, it is necessary for the individual to search selectively. Books take more time from the inception of an idea until publication than any of the other means of communication men tioned. As a consequence, their function is somewhat different. Many good books are a compilation of up to date knowledge and serve as reference or instruction manuals. Some books are a collection of previously published papers dealing with a certain topic, while others may basically provide large sets of data or examples. The Frontiers in Sedimentary Geology series was established both for stu dents and practicing earth scientists who wish to either stay abreast of the most recent ideas or developments or to become familiar with an important topic in the field of sedimentary geology. The series attempts to deal with sub jects that are in the forefront of both scientific and economic interest. The treatment of a subject in an individual volume should be a combination of topi cal, regional, and interdisciplinary approaches. Although these three terms can be defined separately, in reality they should flow into each other. A topical treatment should relate to a major category of sedimentary geology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the world’s energy still comes from fossil fuels, and there are still many strides being made in the efficiency and cost effectiveness of extracting these important and increasingly more elusive natural resources. This is only possible if the nature of the emergence, evolution, and parameter estimation of high grade reservoir rocks at great depths is known and a theory of their forecast is developed. Over 60 percent of world oil production is currently associated with carbonate reservoir rocks. The exploration, appraisal and development of these fields are significantly complicated by a number of factors. These factors include the structural complexity of the carbonate complexes, variability of the reservoir rock types and properties within a particular deposit, many unknowns in the evaluation of fracturing and its spatial variability, and the preservation of the reservoir rock qualities with depth. The main objective of most studies is discovering patterns in the reservoir rock property changes of carbonate deposits of different genesis, composition and age. A short list of the unsolved issues includes: the role of facies environment in the carbonate formation; the major geologic factors affecting the formation of high-capacity reservoir rocks and preservation of their properties; recommendations as to the use of the new techniques in studies of the structural parameters; and establishing a correlation between the major evaluation parameters. The focus of this volume is to show the scientific and engineering community a revolutionary process. The author perfected an earlier developed methodology in studies of the void space structure (Bagrintseva’s method, 1982). This methodology is based on carbonate rock saturation with luminophore and on special techniques in processing of photographs made under UV light. The luminophore technique was combined with the raster electron microscopy and its variation, the studies under the cathode luminescence regime. This combination enabled a more detailed study of the reservoir void space, the nonuniformity in the open fracture evolution, their morphology, length and variability of openness. Over recent years these techniques have found wide application. Useful for the veteran engineer or scientist and the student alike, this book is a must-have for any geologist, engineer, or student working in the field of upstream petroleum engineering.

Book Depositional History and Reservoir Characterisation of the Latest Devonian Early Carboniferous Fairfield Group Northwestern Lennard Shelf Canning Basin Western Australia

Download or read book Depositional History and Reservoir Characterisation of the Latest Devonian Early Carboniferous Fairfield Group Northwestern Lennard Shelf Canning Basin Western Australia written by Zahra Seyedmehdi and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: [Truncated abstract] Detailed sedimentological analysis of core from 40 wells on the northwestern Lennard Shelf, northern Canning Basin, was undertaken to interpret the depositional history of the latest Devonian Early Carboniferous carbonate-siliciclastic Fairfi eld Group within a sequence stratigraphic framework. Integration of sedimentological and petrophysical interpretations with existing biostratigraphic data and new seismic interpretation was used to establish a geological model in which to examine the roles of depositional facies and diagenetic modifi cation on reservoir quality. The Fairfi eld Group is composed of fourteen facies associations (FA1- FA14) identifi ed from detailed sedimentological study of core. The majority of associations (FA1-FA9) were deposited on a broad inner ramp with open marine to restricted shallow subtidal intertidal supratidal conditions. FA1 represents a restricted supratidal area. Shallow subtidal intertidal fenestral microbial mats and bioclastic facies (FA2) were widely developed on the platform and are typically dolomitised. Sandstones and siltstones represent deposition on tidal fl ats and in open marine areas (FA3 and FA4). Protected and restricted shallow subtidal areas on the platform are typically fi ne carbonate facies (FA5 and FA6). Bioclastic sediments were deposited in high energy zones as shoals (FA8 and FA9) and FA7 represents deposition intermediate to shoals and the protected lagoon. Two facies associations represent the middle to outer ramp. They are characterized by carbonate mudstone deposited on the distal mid ramp (FA10) and bioclastic sandstones on the proximal mid ramp (FA11). Three outer ramp to slope facies associations (FA12-FA14) are composed of turbiditic sandstones and limestones. A distally steepened ramp morphology for the Fairfi eld Group, identifi ed from seismic data, is supported by a broad peritidal platform facies and turbiditic facies of the outer ramp. The Fairfi eld Group ramp evolved from the underlying Famennian platforms as a result of the global loss of reef-builders during extinction events in the Late Devonian, ongoing tectonic activity associated with the Fitzroy Trough, relative sea-level changes and antecedent topography. The base of the Fairfi eld Group is represented by a fl ooding surface in the majority of studied wells, and the upper contact is conformable in the northwestern part of the study area where it is overlain by the Early Carboniferous Anderson Formation. The Fairfi eld Group is subdivided into fi ve regional stratal packages (P1-P5) and two local packages (L1 and L2) that represent four third-order sequences (S1-S4). The sequences are bounded by fl ooding surfaces (FS) and include transgressive system tracts (TST) composed of mid to outer ramp facies associations and capping highstand system tracts (HST) composed of inner ramp facies associations. Lowstand system tracts (LST), identifi ed in S2 and S3, and are characterised by siliciclastic wedges deposited on the outer ramp. Overall, the Fairfi eld Group was largely deposited during sea-level highstands (HST) characterized by progradational trends and dominant shallow subtidal inner ramp facies associations...
