Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some people suffer from chronic, debilitating disorders for which no conventional treatment brings relief. Can marijuana ease their symptoms? Would it be breaking the law to turn to marijuana as a medication? There are few sources of objective, scientifically sound advice for people in this situation. Most books about marijuana and medicine attempt to promote the views of advocates or opponents. To fill the gap between these extremes, authors Alison Mack and Janet Joy have extracted critical findings from a recent Institute of Medicine study on this important issue, interpreting them for a general audience. Marijuana As Medicine? provides patientsâ€"as well as the people who care for themâ€"with a foundation for making decisions about their own health care. This empowering volume examines several key points, including: Whether marijuana can relieve a variety of symptoms, including pain, muscle spasticity, nausea, and appetite loss. The dangers of smoking marijuana, as well as the effects of its active chemical components on the immune system and on psychological health. The potential use of marijuana-based medications on symptoms of AIDS, cancer, multiple sclerosis, and several other specific disorders, in comparison with existing treatments. Marijuana As Medicine? introduces readers to the active compounds in marijuana. These include the principal ingredient in Marinol, a legal medication. The authors also discuss the prospects for developing other drugs derived from marijuana's active ingredients. In addition to providing an up-to-date review of the science behind the medical marijuana debate, Mack and Joy also answer common questions about the legal status of marijuana, explaining the conflict between state and federal law regarding its medical use. Intended primarily as an aid to patients and caregivers, this book objectively presents critical information so that it can be used to make responsible health care decisions. Marijuana As Medicine? will also be a valuable resource for policymakers, health care providers, patient counselors, medical faculty and studentsâ€"in short, anyone who wants to learn more about this important issue.

Book excerpt: CBD (Cannabidiol) is a compound found in the Cannabis plant. It can be used in several different ways including vaping, tinctures, capsules, and edibles.Unlike its close relative, THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol), CBD is completely non-psychoactive. This allows us to benefit from the many health properties of the Cannabis plant without the negative side effects of "getting high."Because of this, CBD became a very popular option for those seeking a natural alternative to treat conditions such as chronic pain, multiple sclerosis, PTSD, epilepsy and other mental disorders. At first, many were skeptical, thinking that a natural compound, let alone a Cannabis-compound, could effectively treat such a wide range of conditions. But as medical researchers learned more, and the stories from tens of thousands of people began to stack up, the truth was undeniable. According to some statistics, at least 7.6 million people die each year from cancer throughout the world. 4 million of those people are between the ages of 30 and 69 at the time of their death. Book The Health Effects of Cannabis and Cannabinoids

Download or read book The Health Effects of Cannabis and Cannabinoids written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2017-03-31 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Significant changes have taken place in the policy landscape surrounding cannabis legalization, production, and use. During the past 20 years, 25 states and the District of Columbia have legalized cannabis and/or cannabidiol (a component of cannabis) for medical conditions or retail sales at the state level and 4 states have legalized both the medical and recreational use of cannabis. These landmark changes in policy have impacted cannabis use patterns and perceived levels of risk. However, despite this changing landscape, evidence regarding the short- and long-term health effects of cannabis use remains elusive. While a myriad of studies have examined cannabis use in all its various forms, often these research conclusions are not appropriately synthesized, translated for, or communicated to policy makers, health care providers, state health officials, or other stakeholders who have been charged with influencing and enacting policies, procedures, and laws related to cannabis use. Unlike other controlled substances such as alcohol or tobacco, no accepted standards for safe use or appropriate dose are available to help guide individuals as they make choices regarding the issues of if, when, where, and how to use cannabis safely and, in regard to therapeutic uses, effectively. Shifting public sentiment, conflicting and impeded scientific research, and legislative battles have fueled the debate about what, if any, harms or benefits can be attributed to the use of cannabis or its derivatives, and this lack of aggregated knowledge has broad public health implications. The Health Effects of Cannabis and Cannabinoids provides a comprehensive review of scientific evidence related to the health effects and potential therapeutic benefits of cannabis. This report provides a research agendaâ€"outlining gaps in current knowledge and opportunities for providing additional insight into these issuesâ€"that summarizes and prioritizes pressing research needs.

Book excerpt: An essential guide to understanding the health benefits of marijuana and CBD Marijuana has been used for thousands of years as a medicine, but pot has been illegal in the United States for most of our lives. Almost all states have now legalized its medical use, and many consumers and physicians are exploring it as an alternative to conventional treatments. There’s substantial evidence that marijuana (cannabis) is a safe and effective treatment for chronic pain, chemo side effects, sleep and mood disorders, MS, and Parkinson’s disease, among others. But there’s also misinformation about marijuana on social media. And most physicians have limited knowledge on the subject, while dispensary staff (aka “budtenders”) lack medical training. Mikhail Kogan, MD, a renowned expert on medical marijuana, has found that cannabinoids (THC, CBD, hemp, and other cannabis products) can often be more beneficial, have fewer side effects, and be safer than many conventional medications, including opioids and other painkillers. But different ailments require different strains, doses, and routes of delivery. Medical Marijuana demystifies marijuana and other forms of cannabis in a user-friendly guide that will help readers: • Understand how marijuana morphed from the days of “Reefer Madness” to being hailed as a wonder weed • Navigate the complex medical and legal world of marijuana • Understand the risks and benefits of THC, CBD, and other cannabis products • Evaluate the pros and cons of inhaled and other routes of delivery: edibles, topicals, and even suppositories • Find a doctor who can recommend medical cannabis • Choose a reliable dispensary • Learn how to evaluate labels on cannabis products • Discover cost-saving strategies since medical marijuana isn’t covered by health insurance With real-life patients’ stories woven throughout the book, simple explanatory graphics, and the most up-to-date information, this is the definitive guide to the wide-ranging benefits of medical marijuana and other forms of cannabis.

Book Cannabis and Cannabinoid Based Medicines in Cancer Care

Download or read book Cannabis and Cannabinoid Based Medicines in Cancer Care written by Claude Cyr and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-02-11 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of cannabinoid-based medicines (CBM), and cannabis in particular, has risen steadily among cancer and palliative care patients over the last few years. This textbook aims to address the multiple challenges facing healthcare providers regarding the use of CBM in this vulnerable patient population. It provides insight into the latest preclinical and clinical data and offers a practical approach on the use of CBM in a rapidly evolving landscape. It answers questions regarding the prescribing process and elucidates controversies regarding cannabis’ disease-modifying effects. The first chapters will review basic concepts of the endocannabinoid system and pharmacology of CBM, while focusing more specifically on the unique characteristics of two main cannabinoids: THC and CBD. Indicating which benefits can be expected from using either or both of these compounds, the book then addresses issues of drug-drug interactions and other challenges involved in prescribing CBM to frail patients with polypharmacy and multiple comorbidities. Comparing available products, both approved and non-approved by the FDA, the book discusses regional challenges for accessing reliably tested and labelled products in the context of standardization efforts. After carefully determining objectives and addressing patient expectations, further chapters will examine the different clinical settings in which CBM may be useful in cancer care and explore symptom management, including cancer pain, anxiety, nausea, and insomnia among others. The possible benefits of cannabis psychoactivity will also be discussed, including harm reduction strategies for patients who wish to explore these effects. Cannabis and Cannabinoid-Based Medicines in Cancer Care: A Comprehensive Guide to Medical Management serves as a comprehensive text for oncologists, palliative care specialists, general practitioners, and nurse practitioners working with cancer patients or in palliative care settings.

Download or read book CBD Oil for Cancer written by Daniel Ross Ph D and published by . This book was released on 2019-10-30 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the cancer patient, cannabis has a number of potential benefits, especially in the management of symptoms. Cannabis is useful in combatting anorexia, chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, pain, insomnia, and depression. Cannabis might be less potent than other available antiemetics, but for some patients, it is the only agent that works, and it is the only antiemetic that also increases appetite. Inhaled cannabis is more effective than placebo in ameliorating peripheral neuropathy in a number of conditions, and it could prove useful in chemotherapy-induced neuropathy. A pharmacokinetic interaction study of vaporized cannabis in patients with chronic pain on stable doses of sustained-release opioids demonstrated no clinically significant change in plasma opiates, while suggesting the possibility of synergistic analgesia. Aside from symptom management, an increasing body of in vitro and animal-model studies supports a possible direct anticancer effect of cannabinoids by way of a number of different mechanisms involving apoptosis, angiogenesis, and inhibition of metastasis. Despite an absence adequate clinical trials, abundant anecdotal reports that describe patients having remarkable responses to cannabis as an anticancer agent, especially when taken as a high-potency orally ingested concentrate, are circulating. Human studies should be conducted to address critical questions related to the foregoing effects. Furthermore, CBD is known for mitigating chemotherapy side effects, such as nausea, vomiting etc. Therefore, this palliative treatment could improve the overall quality of life for pancreatic cancer patients. In order to understand the benefits of CBD for cancer, we must first clarify what cancer is and how it occurs. Cancer starts when the body's cells begin uncontrollably dividing. This leads to tumors, which can cause an array of complications. The symptoms and prognosis depend on the cancer in question. It is also possible for some cancers to spread to other tissues. Clinically, I have observed that many cancer patients benefit from adding cannabis to their pain regimen. Although the effect on chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy has not been glaringly obvious, other sorts of cancer-related pain appear to respond. Patients who have been put on high doses of opiates at the end of life by their well-meaning oncologist or palliative care team frequently feel totally unable to communicate with their loved ones in their precious remaining time because of altered cognition. Many have successfully weaned themselves down or off their opiate dose by adding cannabis to their regimen. Although it would seem that thc-dominant strains of cannabis would be most likely to have analgesic effects, patients often report significant pain reduction from strains that are predominantly cbd-rich. Although cbd does not actually bind to the cb1 receptor, it does block the fatty-acid binding protein that transports the endocannabinoid intracellularly to be hydrolyzed by the fatty-acid amide hydrolase, hence allowing the endogenous cannabinoid complexed with the receptors to persist The CBD (Cannabidiol) effect rather amplifies the working of cannabinoid receptors, consequently improving the effectiveness of THC and other cannabinoids. Therefore, patients should use a combined treatment of THC and CBD for best results. This book gives an account of everything you need to know about cancer, cbd oil, CBD oil dosage for cancer treatment, success stories of people that used cbd oil for treating their cancer and how CBD Oil can be used to treat cancer, how you can get cbd oil online and at retail shops and lots of interesting and informative topics and sub-topics. Book Healing With Hemp CBD Oil

Download or read book Healing With Hemp CBD Oil written by Earl Mindell, RPh, MH, PhD and published by Square One Publishers, Inc.. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The health benefits of marijuana are now getting a good deal of attention. Yet hemp—a close relative of marijuana—is actually a far richer source of CBD, the compound responsible for effectively treating dozens of disorders, and contains very little THC, the substance responsible for marijuana’s highs. Sounds like growing and using hemp is a win-win situation, right? Not quite, because the US government, which holds the patent for CBD specifically because of its healing abilities, has unfairly classified hemp as a Class 1 drug, thereby banning people in the United States from growing it commercially. If you find this confusing, you’re not alone. That’s why best-selling author Earl Mindell has written Healing with Hemp CBD Oil, a straightforward book that will first help you understand what’s going on with hemp oil in the United States, and then teach you how to use this valuable natural remedy to improve your health. The book begins by looking at the important role the hemp plant has played in both Eastern and Western societies as a source for paper, textiles, rope, and so much more. This is followed by a discussion of the science behind CBD’s medical benefits. The author then provides a consumer’s guide to buying hemp products—especially its oil and its CBD supplements—and offers an eye-opening examination of hemp’s legal status in the United States, from the 1900s to now. Finally, based on up-to-date studies, Dr. Mindell presents an A-to-Z guide to the many uses of hemp oil and CBD for various health conditions, from arthritis to depression to heart disease. Although the United States has given CBD-rich hemp a problematic legal status, fortunately, this product—sourced from other countries—is readily available. Healing with Hemp CBD Oil guides you in using this all-natural substance as a safe, side effect-free remedy.

Book excerpt: Hemp has a rich history throughout many cultures and regions as an effective, natural cure to a variety of ailments that affect mammals and, more specifically, human beings. Clinical research conducted with hemp cannabinoids officially began in the 1940s in the United States, when CBD was first isolated from the molecular structure, despite ongoing international research proving the efficacy well before that time. Scientists and doctors from around the globe are heavily invested in the study of cannabinoids like CBD and their interaction with the human endocannabinoid system. In The Ultimate Book of CBD Remedies, Ryan Lewis has interviewed highly regarded pioneers, developers, and doctors focused on the benefits of CBD and cannabinoids, as well as exploring ancient medicinal practices that reference hemp as a “cure-all”—all the while seeking to re-evaluate and re-define the application to modern disorders. Highlighted are personal experiences of these notables and an easy to understand collection of information showing how CBD works with many chronic conditions, without the risk of significant side effects. Alongside the expected research and analysis, Lewis supplies readers with a solid basis upon which to select the right delivery system for themselves and their families. Whether that be the combination of topicals and tinctures for neurological/chronic pain or an “as needed” softgel regimen to encourage the return to an optimum state of homeostasis, consumers will understand how CBD interacts with their bodies and why immediate and lasting relief is often found with virtually no side effects. The author, Ryan Lewis, is the founder and CEO of Global Cannabinoids, one of the largest wholesale CBD and hemp derived cannabinoid producers, manufacturers, and distributors in the world. Lewis built the very first company to distribute American grown hemp and CBD oil and has been a pioneer in building the global supply chain for hemp cannabinoids that are now found in thousands of CBD branded products worldwide. Whether looking to CBD for debilitating pain, seizures, anxiety, depression and stress, or cancer treatment, The Ultimate Book of CBD Remedies dives into the myriad of health complications we face today and how hemp CBD has improved the lives of men, women, and children across the globe, both by treating conditions once thought to be untreatable with modern medicine and by keeping them away from harmful and dangerous opioids.
