Book excerpt: As we approach the end of the century, this new book looks back at over one hundred years of Canandaigua's history, with photographs of the people, places, and events that have defined the proud and vibrant community we know so well today. Over 200 never before published photographs are presented in this pictorial history, which spans the early 1800's through the early 1950's. Readers will be fascinated by the immense changes that have occurred since the early days, but will also draw connections to the present and can savor the fact that Canandaigua still holds numerous charms of yesteryear. Works from the collection of renowned area photographer Henry Boyce are featured here. This artist's work documented the events and people that shaped Canandaigua's history and community. Rare images of philanthropist Mary Clarke Thompson and her Sonnenberg Gardens will delight readers. Also included are many photographs of Canandaigua's early downtown area. Book excerpt: Built on the site of a Seneca Iroquois village, Canandaigua was an important railroad junction and home port for several steamboats by the mid-19th century. After the Civil War, local industries included two brick works, the Lisk Manufacturing Company, several mills, and the regionally prominent McKechnie Brewery. Book Seismic Stratigraphic and Depositional History of Canandaigua Lake NY

Download or read book Seismic Stratigraphic and Depositional History of Canandaigua Lake NY written by Robert William Wellner and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The correlation of high-resolution Uniboom seismic reflection data ($/sim$120 km) from Canandaigua Lake, NY to drillcores (119.3 and 13 m) and geophysical results from the dry valley south of Canandaigua Lake has revealed that this basin is overdeepened to a maximum of 261 m below lake level (52 m below modern-day sea level) and has a maximum sediment thickness of 202 m. The first-order stratigraphy beneath the dry valley has been correlated to the lake seismic data and consists of: (1) a basal, coarse-grained sand and gravel (seismic sequence I); (2) a massive clay unit devoid of dropstones (unit 2a) and a coarse-grained clayey to sandy gravel (unit 2b) (seismic sequence II); Lake seismic sequence III is confined to the north-central portion of the lake and was not sampled by dry valley drilling; (3) beneath the dry valley unit 2b is overlain by rhythmically bedded silt and sand with dropstones (seismic sequence IV); (4) a coarsening-upward sequence of washed sand and gravel with artesian water (seismic sequence V) and; (5) cyclically interbedded peat, marl, and clay (seismic sequence VI). The basal sand and gravel of depositional unit 1 has been correlated to the Valley Heads Moraine ($/sim$14.8-14.1 ka), which implies that the entire fill sequence beneath Canandaigua Lake was deposited during a single, rapid late Wisconsin-Holocene infill event. Radiocarbon dates from in situ peat layers within depositional unit 6 (subsurface depths $$12 m) further confines the deposition of units 2-5 (seismic sequences II-V) to $$13.5 ka. Deposition of the Canandaigua Lake sediments is chronologically equivalent to Heinrich Event H-1, which records the surging of the Laurentide Ice Sheet into the northern Atlantic Ocean. The Canandaigua sediments record a similar surging in the Finger Lakes region and add to the growing documentation of the rapid regional collapse of the Laurentide Ice sheet at this time. The cyclic stratigraphy of depositional unit 6 ($

Book Native American Placenames of the Southwest

Download or read book Native American Placenames of the Southwest written by William Bright and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2013-03-11 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever driven through a small town with an intriguing name like Wyandotte or Cuyamungue and wondered where that name came from? Or how such well-known placenames as Tucson, Waco, or Tulsa originated? Native American placenames like these occur all across the American Southwest. This user-friendly guide—covering Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas—provides fascinating information about the meaning and origins of southwestern placenames. With its unique regional approach and compact design, the handbook is especially suitable for curious travelers. Written by distinguished linguist William Bright, the handbook is organized alphabetically, and its entries for places—including towns, cities, counties, parks, and geographic landmarks—are concise and easy to read. Entries give the state and county, along with all available information on pronunciation, the name of the language from which the name derives, the name’s literal meaning, and relevant history. In their introduction to the handbook, editors Alice Anderton and Sean O’Neill provide easy-to-understand pronunciation keys for English and Native languages. They further explain basic linguistic terminology and common southwestern geographical terms such as mesa, canyon, and barranca. The book also features maps showing all counties in each of the southwestern states, a list of Native languages and language families, and contact information for tribal headquarters throughout the Southwest.
