Book excerpt: This report provides the scientific supporting information & rationale for the development of Canadian soil quality guidelines for the protection of environmental health for toluene, ethylbenzene, & xylenes (TEX). Information is provided on TEX physical & chemical properties, analytical methods, TEX production & uses, global sources of TEX, sources & levels of TEX in the Canadian environment, environmental fate & behaviour of TEX in soil & water, and behaviour & effects in biota (terrestrial plants & invertebrates, soil microbes, livestock & wildlife), and behaviour & effects of TEX in humans & mammals, including uptake, metabolism, elimination, & toxicity. The final sections describe how the soil quality guidelines for TEX were derived and set out the guidelines for agricultural, residential/parkland, commercial, and industrial land use. Areas for future research are also summarized.

Book Canadian Environmental Quality Guidelines for Nonylphenol and Its Ethoxylates

Download or read book Canadian Environmental Quality Guidelines for Nonylphenol and Its Ethoxylates written by Canada. National Guidelines and Standards Office and published by National Guidelines and Standards Office. This book was released on 2002 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonylphenyl (NP) and NP ethoxylates (NPEs) are a group of organic chemicals that are widely used as surfactants, emulsifiers, wetting agents, and dispersants in a wide variety of industrial processes & commercial products. This document provides the rationale for development of Canadian environmental quality guidelines for NP & NPEs. It contains technical background information on the chemical & physical properties of NP & NPEs and a review of their sources & emissions in Canada, the distribution & behaviour of these chemicals in the environment, their toxicological effects on aquatic & terrestrial species, and NP/NPE guidelines developed in other jurisdictions. The information is then used to derive water, sediment, & soil quality guidelines for NP/NPEs to protect ecological receptors in each of these environmental compartments. The final sections suggest areas for future research & provide guidance on implementation of the guidelines.

Book Canadian soil quality guidelines trichloroethylene

Download or read book Canadian soil quality guidelines trichloroethylene written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canadian Soil Quality Guidelines for the protection of environmental health for TCE were originally published by the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment (CCME) in 1997 (CCME 1997). [...] This document contains an updated review of information on the chemical and physical properties of trichloroethylene, a review of sources and emissions in Canada, the distribution and behaviour of trichloroethylene in the environment, and the toxicological effects of trichloroethylene on microbial processes, plants, and animals - including humans. [...] These values are nationally endorsed through the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment (CCME) and are recommended for toxic substances and other parameters (e.g., nutrients, pH) of concern in the ambient environment. [...] Although the NCSRP program officially ended in March of 1995, the development of soil quality guidelines was pursued under the direction of the CCME Soil Quality Guidelines Task Group because of the continued need for national soil quality guidelines for the management of soil quality (with a particular focus on remediation of contaminated sites). [...] The guidelines originally published in that document have since been revised and were superseded by the Canadian Soil Quality Guidelines for the protection of environmental and human health published by CCME in October of 1999 (CCME 1999).

Book A Protocol for the Derivation of Environmental and Human Health Soil Quality Guidelines

Download or read book A Protocol for the Derivation of Environmental and Human Health Soil Quality Guidelines written by Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment. Subcommittee on Environmental Quality Criteria for Contaminated Sites and published by Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment. This book was released on 1996 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document provides the rationale and guidance for developing environmental and human health soil quality guidelines for contaminated sites in Canada. It begins with background information on the National Contaminated Sites Remediation Program assessment and remediation framework, including the scientific tools developed to help assess and remediate contaminated sites. Information on the principles behind the soil quality guidelines derivation protocol is also included. This is followed by description of the processes for deriving environmental and human health guidelines. The protocol considers the effects of contaminated soil exposure on human and ecological receptors for given land uses (agricultural, residential/parkland, commercial, and industrial). The final section gives guidance on derivation of the final soil quality guideline. Appendices include information on methods and models employed in the ecological sections of the document, and on check mechanisms for indirect exposure from soil contaminants for the human health guidelines.

Book Canadian Soil Quality Guidelines for Contaminated Sites Human Health Effects Inorganic Arsenic

Download or read book Canadian Soil Quality Guidelines for Contaminated Sites Human Health Effects Inorganic Arsenic written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document provides the supporting scientific rationale required to accept or modify the interim soil criteria in the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment Soil Quality Guidelines as final environmental quality criteria for arsenic. The document reviews the sources & emissions of arsenic, its distribution & behaviour in the environment, and its toxicological effects on humans and experimental animals. Human health soil quality guidelines are then derived for residential land/parkland, agricultural (residential use of farm property), commercial, and industrial land uses and the use of groundwater for drinking.
