Book Canadian Pen and Ink Sketches

Download or read book Canadian Pen and Ink Sketches written by John Fraser and published by Ghose Press. This book was released on 2007-10 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PREFACE. THE Author of this very practical treatise on Scotch Loch - Fishing desires clearly that it may be of use to all who had it. He does not pretend to have written anything new, but to have attempted to put what he has to say in as readable a form as possible. Everything in the way of the history and habits of fish has been studiously avoided, and technicalities have been used as sparingly as possible. The writing of this book has afforded him pleasure in his leisure moments, and that pleasure would be much increased if he knew that the perusal of it would create any bond of sympathy between himself and the angling community in general. This section is interleaved with blank shects for the readers notes. The Author need hardly say that any suggestions addressed to the case of the publishers, will meet with consideration in a future edition. We do not pretend to write or enlarge upon a new subject. Much has been said and written-and well said and written too on the art of fishing but loch-fishing has been rather looked upon as a second-rate performance, and to dispel this idea is one of the objects for which this present treatise has been written. Far be it from us to say anything against fishing, lawfully practised in any form but many pent up in our large towns will bear us out when me say that, on the whole, a days loch-fishing is the most convenient. One great matter is, that the loch-fisher is depend- ent on nothing but enough wind to curl the water, -and on a large loch it is very seldom that a dead calm prevails all day, -and can make his arrangements for a day, weeks beforehand whereas the stream- fisher is dependent for a good take on the state of the water and however pleasant and easy it may be for one living near the banks of a good trout stream or river, it is quite another matter to arrange for a days river-fishing, if one is looking forward to a holiday at a date some weeks ahead. Providence may favour the expectant angler with a good day, and the water in order but experience has taught most of us that the good days are in the minority, and that, as is the case with our rapid running streams, -such as many of our northern streams are, -the water is either too large or too small, unless, as previously remarked, you live near at hand, and can catch it at its best. A common belief in regard to loch-fishing is, that the tyro and the experienced angler have nearly the same chance in fishing, -the one from the stern and the other from the bow of the same boat. Of all the absurd beliefs as to loch-fishing, this is one of the most absurd. Try it. Give the tyro either end of the boat he likes give him a cast of ally flies he may fancy, or even a cast similar to those which a crack may be using and if he catches one for every three the other has, he may consider himself very lucky. Of course there are lochs where the fish are not abundant, and a beginner may come across as many as an older fisher but we speak of lochs where there are fish to be caught, and where each has a fair chance. Again, it is said that the boatman has as much to do with catching trout in a loch as the angler. Well, we dont deny that. In an untried loch it is necessary to have the guidance of a good boatman but the same argument holds good as to stream-fishing...

They are sent forth in the hope that they may become a Mission of Help to those who are looking westwards, whether as citizens Of the Empire, or as intending settlers in the spacious Cana dian lands. It is evident that all of us in the coming days are going to be linked up with Canada in all sorts of ways. And it seemed a pity to go there, to gather experiences, and not take the trouble to share them with others. Book Drawings

Download or read book Drawings written by Dorian Vallejo and published by . This book was released on 2010-05-15 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Dorian Vallejo, drawing is an integral part of the creative process. The drawings selected for this volume represent some of the work he does from life. They offer a glimpse of his art done solely for the pleasure of creative research and the visual expression of ideas. In part, they owe their roots to the centuries old tradition of academic figure drawing. However, they are not a strict adherent of any school in particular. Instead, that tradition is used as a point of departure. Here we view drawings that seek to capture visually, a distinct feeling, tone or mood. In some cases the figure is used in a symbolic manner, hinting at phases or streams of conscious awareness that are present as we trail off into sleep. In other cases the symbolism is a visual interpretation of the dual nature of our existence. Still, other drawings are experiments in movement and over lapping forms. Also represented, are several gestures that display the characteristic beauty inherent in the tangible expressions of rapid creation. In this collection of drawings are many avenues of thought allowing for a view into the birth of ideas that may later become paintings. One consistently present element is Vallejo?s appreciation for the beauty of life and the feminine in particular. With rare exception his subjects in this volume are all women represented in the bloom of youth. There is a feeling that these beautiful young women who paused for a brief moment to be immortalized, in spite of the ever changing flux of life, will grace us with the memory of their essence, like the flowers of spring. In every one of these drawings is clearly a mind wholly, completely and faithfully committed to the pursuit of excellence. This book, the first devoted to the artwork of Dorian Vallejo will be a treasured prize in the libraries of all who love art.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches Abroad: With Pen and Pencil I would say to the gentle reader that the contents of this rather consumptive little vol ume were not intended, originally, for the public eye, but for the eye domestic; being extracts from familiar letters written from abroad to my family at home, and for their especial pleasure and benefit. At the suggestion of a friend, I was induced to put them into type and use them as a thread whereon to hang the illustra tions, the originals of which were, for the most part, drawn from railroad cars, the coupe' of a diligence, the back of a mule, or from the deck of a steamer. The reader will take them for what they are worth. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: “The pigments he concocts from these humble beginnings are as fun to make as they are eye-opening to work with . . . the world never quite looks the same.” —MarthaStewart.com A 2018 Best Book of the Year—The Guardian The Toronto Ink Company was founded in 2014 by designer and artist Jason Logan as a citizen science experiment to make eco-friendly, urban ink from street-harvested pigments. In Make Ink, Logan delves into the history of inkmaking and the science of distilling pigment from the natural world. Readers will learn how to forage for materials such as soot, rust, cigarette butts, peach pits, and black walnut, then how to mix, test, and transform these ingredients into rich, vibrant inks that are sensitive to both place and environment. Organized by color, and featuring lovely minimalist photography throughout, Make Ink combines science, art, and craft to instill the basics of ink making and demonstrate the beauty and necessity of engaging with one of mankind’s oldest tools of communication. “Logan demystifies the process, encouraging experimentation and taking a fresh look at urban environments.” —NPR “The book is full of inspiration and takes a lot of the mystery out of ink making, at least at its simplest level. And it also reminds me why I love ink—any ink or liquid color as much as I do.” —The Well-Appointed Desk “Quite a few recipes . . . that use color from the kitchen: carrots, black beans, blueberries, turmeric, and onion skins all make beautiful ink colors.” —Design Observer “Make Ink opens up about methods, providing an open source guide to DIY ink.” —CityLab

The chief wore a blanket coat and leggings, and a blanket hood with a peak, which depended on a long black eagle plume; stout moccasins (shoes of undressed deer skin) completed his attire: he had about fifty strings of blue wampum round his neck."
