Book excerpt: This publication summarizes results of the second major review of acid deposition and its effects in Canada since the launching of the Eastern Canadian Acid Rain Program in 1985. The first review in 1990 summarized current scientific knowledge and provided a sound factual basis for planning future controls of acidifying emissions. The second review builds on the first by asking two key questions: what progress has been made to date, and whether that is enough to protect Canada's lakes and forests and the health of its citizens from continuing damage by acidic deposition. The publication contains information on trends in emissions of sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides in Canada and the United States, acid deposition in eastern North America, surface water acidity in eastern Canadian lakes, future expected acid deposition levels in lakes and forests, forest health and human health effects, visibility, corrosion of materials, and priorities for scientific research.
