Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canada's Sons on Kopje and Veldt: A Historical Account of the Canadian Contingents In the preparation of this story of the three Canadian Contingents that have been so heroically fighting the Empire's battles in South Africa, the utmost care has been taken to get only the most reliable information. It has been ray aim to make a readable book, and at the same time one that will be an authentic history of the part played by Canada in the fierce war just terminated, the fiercest and most disastrous struggle that England has endured since the Crimea, and one that will doubtless cost her, before South Africa is in a safe and settled condition, vastly larger sums than any other war in her history. Through the kindness of the Minister of Militia, the Honorable F. W. Borden, I have had access to the official reports of the officers commanding the various contingents, and have in this way been enabled to give with historical accuracy the events that have been reported and misreported in the despatches from the front. I have likewise examined with the greatest care the fine work done by such able Canadian correspondents as C. Frederick Hamilton and John Ewan, of the Globe; Stanley McKeown Brown, of the Mail and Empire; S. C. Von Tuger Simonski, of the Montreal Herald; W. Richmond Smith, of the Montreal Star, and others. But what has been of greater value to me in grasping for myself the story of Canada's Sons at the front has been the hundreds of letters - honest, straightforward, soldierly letters - from sons and brothers and husbands in the contingents. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Sons of the Empire, Robert MacDonald explores popular ideas and myths in Edwardian Britain, their use by Baden-Powell, and their influence on the Boy Scout movement. In particular, he analyses the model of masculinity provided by the imperial frontier, the view that life in younger, far-flung parts of the empire was stronger, less degenerate than in Britain. The stereotypical adventurer - the frontiersman - provided an alternative ethic to British society. The best known example of it at the time was Baden-Powell himself, a war scout, the Hero of Mafeking in the South African war, and one of the first cult heroes to be created by the modern media. When Baden-Powell founded the Boy Scouts in 1908, he used both the power of the frontier myth and his own legend as a hero to galvanize the movement. The glamour of war scouting was hard to resist, its adventures a seductive invitation to the first recruits. But Baden-Powell had a serious educational program in mind: Boy Scouts were to be trained in good citizenship. MacDonald documents his study with a wide range of contemporary sources, from newspapers to military memoirs. Exploring the genesis of an imperial institution through its own texts, he brings new insight into the Edwardian age.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the beginning of the twentieth century, there were a number of smaller religious bodies that sought to develop religious and national identity on the margins—something especially difficult when the nation was at war in South Africa. This book examines rich and varied extant sources that provide helpful windows into the wartime experience of Canada’s religious minorities. Those groups on the margins experienced internal struggles and external pressures related to issues of loyalty and identity. How each faith tradition addressed those challenges was shaped by their own dominant personalities, ethnic identity, history, tradition, and theological convictions. Responses were fluid, divided, and rarely unanimous. Those seeking to address such issues not only had to deal with internal expectations and tensions, but also construct a public response that would satisfy often hostile and vocal external critics. Some positions evolved over time, leading to new identities, loyalties, and trajectories. In all cases, being on the margins meant dealing with two dominant national and imperial narratives—English or French—both bolstered respectively by powerful Anglo-Saxon Protestantism or French Quebec Catholicism. The chapters in this book examine how those on the margins sought to do just that.

Book Worth Fighting For

Download or read book Worth Fighting For written by Lara Campbell and published by Between the Lines. This book was released on 2015-04-02 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historians, veterans, museums, and public education campaigns have all documented and commemorated the experience of Canadians in times of war. But Canada also has a long, rich, and important historical tradition of resistance to both war and militarization. This collection brings together the work of sixteen scholars on the history of war resistance. Together they explore resistance to specific wars (including the South African War, the First and Second World Wars, and Vietnam), the ideology and nature of resistance (national, ethical, political, spiritual), and organized activism against militarization (such as cadet training, the Cold War, and nuclear arms). As the federal government continues to support the commemoration and celebration of Canada’s participation in past wars, this collection offers a timely response that explores the complexity of Canada’s position in times of war and the role of social movements in challenging the militarization of Canadian society.

Book excerpt: The image of farmers and workers called to the colours endures in Canada’s social memory of the First World War. But is the ideal of being a citizen first and a soldier only by necessity as recent as our histories and memories suggest? Militia Myths brings to light a military culture that consistently employed the citizen soldier as its foremost symbol, but was otherwise in a state of profound transition. At the time of Confederation, the defence of Canada itself represented the country’s only real obligation to the British Empire, but by the early twentieth century Canadians were already fighting an imperial war in South Africa. In 1914, they began raising an army to fight on the Western Front. By the end of the First World War, the ideological transition was complete: for better or for worse, the untrained civilian who had answered the call-to-arms in 1914 replaced the long-serving volunteer militiaman of the past as the archetypical Canadian citizen soldier. Militia Myths traces the evolution of a uniquely Canadian amateur military tradition -- one that has had an enormous impact on the country’s experience of the First and Second World Wars. Published in association with the Canadian War Museum.

Book Altered Memories of the Great War

Download or read book Altered Memories of the Great War written by Mark David Sheftall and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2010-01-30 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The experiences of World War I touched the lives of a generation but memories of this momentous experience vary enormously throughout the world. In Britain, there was a strong reaction against militarism but in the Dominion powers of Canada, Australia and New Zealand the response was very different. For these former colonial powers, the experience of war was largely accepted as a national rite of passage and their pride and respect for their soldiers' sacrifices found its focus in a powerful nationalist drive. How did a single, supposedly shared experience provoke such contrasting reactions? What does it reveal about earlier, pre-existing ideas of national identity? And how did the memory of war influence later ideas of self-determination and nationhood? "Altered Memories of the Great War" is the first book to compare the distinctive collective narratives that emerged within Britain and the Dominions in response to World War I. It powerfully illuminates the differences as well as the similarities between different memories of war and offers fascinating insights into what this reveals about developing concepts of national identity in the aftermath of World War I.
