Book Products and Provinces

Download or read book Products and Provinces written by Mr.Itai Agur and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2016-09-26 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The waning of the commodity boom places renewed emphasis on manufacturing as an engine for Canadian growth. However, Canadian manufacturing exports have been relatively stagnant since 2000. While the exchange rate depreciation over the past two years has energized export growth, the response has not been as strong as would have been expected given the size of the depreciation. More fundamental issues appear to be impeding the growth of the Canadian manufacturing sector. This study analyzes the structural factors behind export competitiveness by using unique Canadian data on exports, which are disaggregated both by province and by product. Matching exports to similarly disaggregated data on R&D, the capital stock and other supply-side variables, we find that these variables significantly affect export growth, beyond the impact of the exchange rate. In particular, investment in R&D, capital infrastructure and vocational training improves innovation and production capacity. These results are robust to a factor-augmented approach that controls for multicollinearity.

Book Canada s Manufacturing Sector

Download or read book Canada s Manufacturing Sector written by Edward A. Carmichael and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Executive Summary: The purpose of this study is to measure and analyse the recent performance of Canadian manufacturing and to examine the extent to which the recent weakness of this key sector of the Canadian economy reflects cyclical factors in Canada and other industrialized countries as opposed to structural problems which are long-term in nature. The analysis proceeds first at an aggregate level in which the performance of the manufacturing sector as a whole is viewed relative to the performance of the overall economy. Then the manufacturing sector is divided into 32 separate industries in order to get a clearer view of Canada's areas of strength and weakness within manufacturing.

Book excerpt: From the Preface: The Symposium reviewed the major developments that have marked the growth of Canadian manufacturing industries in the 1960s and considered the key issues likely to affect the important sector in the 1970s. The members of the Symposium concurred that the performance of Canadian manufacturing would have an important influence on Canada's over-all economic development in the decade ahead. Attention was directed particularly to certain basic questions concerning an industrial strategy for Canada, and to a wide range of factors that may affect the growth and competitive position of Canadian manufacturing. In a broad perspective, the effect of international developments, particularly those in the United States, on Canadian manufacturing, were assessed.

This book was released on 1986 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Understanding the reason for the productivity differences between Canadian and U.S. manufacturing industries is important if a sound industrial strategy is to be followed in the next decade. This is particularly the case if Canada implements its policy of closer economic ties with the United States - either in the form of the previous Trudeau Administration's sectoral free trade approach or the present Mulroney Administration's attempt to enhance access of Canadian goods to the United States."--
