Their practice had been to trace the roots of theatre to mid-1930s, to the appearance of Father Emile Legault and his troupe, the Compagnons de Saint-Laurent, dismissing what had gone before. In this innovative history, Leonard Doucette sets out deal for the first time with all plays that have survived to 1867 and to link them with the evolution of politics, institutions, and culture in French Canada. The study of theatre has often been handicapped also by the outdated practice of defining the literary-cultural history of a nation by identifying the masterpieces produced in specific periods and then defining other works in terms of what they are not. The surprisingly rich and varied history of theatrical forms in French Canada has just begun to receive the attention it deserves from scholars. Some of the texts and authors referred to in this history are identified for the first time: the materials cited and conclusions drawn are based upon original research in major Canadian libraries as well as the works of published critics and historians. The result is an excellent introduction to the various forms theatre has taken and the problems it has encountered in French Canada.

The Drama of Our Past fills this significant void by presenting, in English for the first time, five full-length plays and five playlets which together cover the major genres and themes treated by local dramatists throughout the century.These plays include: Anglomania (1803), the first play with an explicit Canadian theme and setting to appear since the seventeenth century; the best-known political plays -- the five Status Quo comedies (1834); The Donation (1842), the first play by a Quebec-born writer to be produced and published in Canada, plus another by the same author dealing with French-English relations; Felix Poutre (1862), the most popular play in public performance; and the best-known and most frequently staged of college plays, Archibald Cameron of Locheill (1868/1894).Much more than a mere anthology, The Drama of Our Past provides a lengthy introductory essay for each play, situating it in the social, historical, and political context in which it was composed and performed. When read in the chronological order in which they are presented, the essays and plays offer a connected history of Canadian drama in French for this period. The plays are presented in their full and most authoritative versions, in translations which convey both the sense of the original French and its flavour or spirit, ranging from stilted literary convention to amusing imitation of local dialect, from solemn political harangue to earthy humour. What emerges is an indigenousdramaturgy demonstrably more original, impassioned, sophisticated, and entertaining than has hitherto been credited.

Book excerpt: Themes of embodiment and agency have long been central to feminist philosophical thought and have increasingly led feminists to extend their theorizing to encompass a range of identities shaped by processes of gender, race, class, disability, and sexuality. The intersection of these themes, however, has often been limited to analyzing how specific modes of socialized embodiment can be impediments to agency or autonomy. Embodiment and Agency is distinctive in bringing a remarkable range of theoretical perspectives and resources to the project in ways that stress possibilities as well as constraints. Contributors utilize, for example, phenomenology, psychoanalysis, care ethics, analytic philosophy, Hegelian critique, and postcolonial theory to examine embodiment and agency in contexts ranging from a child’s struggle to find her own identity to global politics. The volume is integrated through its theme, through an introductory essay situating the contributions in relation to each other and to current feminist theory on agency, and through the structuring of the contents into two distinct sections. Part I, “Becoming Embodied Subjects,” explores how we become individually and collectively identified subjects through the possibilities for agency that arise from specific modes of embodiment. Part II, “Embodied Relations: Political Contexts,” continues the theme of embodied agency in contemporary sociopolitical contexts. It challenges the reader to reconceptualize the links between embodiment and moral agency in ways adequate to political realities, personal relationships, and collective responsibilities.
