Book excerpt: In March 2000, mindful of the critical importance of large performing arts organizations to Canada's artists and audiences and the serious threats to their financial sustainability, artistic vitality and service to their communities, the Board of the Canada Council for the Arts authorized an examination of these organizations and the effectiveness of Canada Council support for them. [...] The Working Group on Large Performing Arts Organizations The mandate of the Working Group on Large Performing Arts Organizations was to provide advice and recommendations to the Canada Council on the conditions and needs of large performing arts organizations and how the Council's funding programs and non-financial services can better serve these organizations. [...] Given the widespread interest in the subject of the large companies within the arts community and among funding bodies at various levels of government, the Working Group recommends to the Canada Council that it make the Research Study and the Report of the Working Group available publicly. [...] These seven issues are: the growth in artistic activity in Canada, the decline in the value of public sector and Canada Council funding, the under-capitalization of the large companies, the institutional constraints which limit the companies' options for further adaptations to under-funding, the declining audience, demographic changes in the population, and increased competition for disposable inc [...] To address some of the specific information needs of performing arts organizations identified during the course of this project (including but not limited to the large companies), the Working Group suggests the following to the Canada Council: • that it undertake research on the artistic interests and attendance at artistic and cultural events of the culturally diverse population of Canada and on.

Book excerpt: This is the story of the creation and first four decades of one of Canada's pre-eminent cultural organizations. While it documents the history of Canada's National Arts Centre in Ottawa, it also tells the story of the arts in Canada from the 1960s to 2006. The story breaks down into three parts: the years of creation and early growth, fuelled by the talent and resources generated by Canada's 1967 Centennial celebration; the turbulent middle years, marked by a dearth of funds and political disinterest; and finally the "renaissance," when the decision is made to restore and recast the organization to provide continuing benefit to the performing arts in Canada's capital and the country at large. Written in a documentary style, moving from episode to episode, the story is enriched by the personal memories of those who participated in it, including the leading artists, managers, officials, and politicians who were involved.

Book The Roots of Culture the Power of Art

Download or read book The Roots of Culture the Power of Art written by Monica Gattinger and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Canada Council for the Arts is the country’s largest provider of grants for artists and arts organizations, benefiting not only writers, visual artists, performers, and musicians but Canadian culture as a whole. In The Roots of Culture, the Power of Art Monica Gattinger outlines the history of the Canada Council, the impetus for its foundation, and the ongoing debate about its goals and impact. Tracing the Council’s gradual shift from focusing on artistic supply and building the roots of Canadian arts and culture in its early years to its expanded focus on the power of the arts in society over time, Gattinger describes how leaders have navigated core tensions inherent in the Council’s activities. She examines the arguments for and against “art for art’s sake” and pursuing broader social and economic aims through the arts, as well as the inherent political conflicts between serving the needs of the artistic community and the needs of Canadian society, between leadership and followership, between autonomy and collaboration, and between emerging and established artistic practices. Combining lively storytelling with insightful analysis, and beautifully produced with dozens of photos of the art, people, and events that have shaped the organization through the years, The Roots of Culture, the Power of Art is essential reading for those with an interest in Canadian arts and culture and cultural policy.

Book Business Issues in the Arts

Download or read book Business Issues in the Arts written by Anthony Rhine and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-08-08 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Business Issues in the Arts is a text designed to address some of the most prescient business issues that nonprofit arts organizations face today. This text is not a how-to but an in-depth dive into fourteen topics and their associated theories to augment learning in arts administration programs. With contributions from leading academics in arts administration, the book guides readers through an exploration of those topics which have been found by practitioners to be most vital and least explored. Chapters include numerous case examples to illustrate business theory in the artistic and creative environment. The academic contributors themselves each come with both professional backgrounds and research experience, and they are each introduced at the start of their chapters, allowing for a collection of voices to navigate through some oftentimes challenging topics. This book is designed for an advanced undergraduate course or a stand-alone graduate course on the intersection of business and management and the cultural and creative industries, especially those focusing on business issues in the arts.
