Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did Canadians come to lead these mobile, well-coordinated, and hard-hitting attacks? The preparations were intense, according to Granatstein, ranging from individual training to massive corps-wide exercises; careful analysis of "lessons learned" studies; expansion of the role of signallers, gunners and engineers; and perfection of techniques like the "creeping barrage." The "fire and movement" philosophy emphasized by Sir Arthur Currie, Commander of the Canadian Corps, increased the use of tanks, machine guns, Stokes mortars, and phosphorus bombs, among other military hardware. Mobility was the key; Canadians used their two Motor Machine Brigades - with guns and mortars mounted on armoured cars and trucks - with great effect. Granatstein is an award-winning historian who has received six honorary degrees for his work on conflict and Canadian history.

To that consideration every other has been subordinated. By identifying so far as possible the actual battle position of individual battalions it is hoped to stimulate local pride and interest in their respective territorial or recruiting areas. Difficulties were here encountered, both through absence Of detailed Oflicial narratives and limitations of space, but if full justice has not been done each fighting unit, it is not from lack of application and goodwill. Book Canadian Expeditionary Force 1914 1919

Download or read book Canadian Expeditionary Force 1914 1919 written by G.W.L. Nicholson and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2015-11-01 with total page 709 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colonel G.W.L. Nicholson's Canadian Expeditionary Force, 1914-1919 was first published by the Department of National Defence in 1962 as the official history of the Canadian Army’s involvement in the First World War. Immediately after the war ended Colonel A. Fortescue Duguid made a first attempt to write an official history of the war, but the ill-fated project produced only the first of an anticipated eight volumes. Decades later, G.W.L. Nicholson - already the author of an official history of the Second World War - was commissioned to write a new official history of the First. Illustrated with numerous photographs and full-colour maps, Nicholson’s text offers an authoritative account of the war effort, while also discussing politics on the home front, including debates around conscription in 1917. With a new critical introduction by Mark Osborne Humphries that traces the development of Nicholson’s text and analyzes its legacy, Canadian Expeditionary Force, 1914-1919 is an essential resource for both professional historians and military history enthusiasts.

Book From Vimy to Victory

Download or read book From Vimy to Victory written by Hugh Brewster and published by Scholastic Canada. This book was released on 2014 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hugh Brewster captures the remarkable heroism, sacrifice, and victories of Canadian soldiers during the Great War. All was not quiet on the Western Front during the last years of WWI. Soldiers faced mud, trench foot, bombardments, barbed wire, snipers, and poison gas. Despite dreadful odds, the Canadian Corps moved forward, reaching deep inside enemy-occupied Belgium. The war cost Canada 60,661 of its finest citizens and thousands more who were wounded in body and mind. After their hard-won victory at Vimy Ridge, Canadians earned the admiration of the world -- and a reputation as soldiers who could get the job done. From that moment in 1917, Canadian soldiers proved themselves again and again on the bloody battlefields of Passchendaele, Lens, Hill 70, and Amiens, during the Hundred Day's offensive. From Vimy to Victory is presented in an engaging and accessible scrapbook style, with facts and details accompanied by first-person accounts, letters describing life at the Front, wartime diaries, and numerous images, maps, and diagrams that bring World War I to vivid life.

Book 100 Days That Changed Canada

Download or read book 100 Days That Changed Canada written by Canada's History Society Staff and published by . This book was released on 2011-10-07 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every Canadian knows a handful of dates that changed our history: July 1, 1867, when Canada came together at Confederation; November 11, 1918, when the guns of the First World War fell silent; and September 28, 1972, when Paul Henderson scored perhaps the most important hockey goal of all time. But our nation's history, now more than 50,000 days long, runs much deeper than those iconic moments. In 100 Days That Changed Canada, Canada's History Society has selected the 100 days that truly formed this nation. Some of the dates will surprise. Ken Dryden argues that it wasn't September 28, the date of the Henderson goal, but September 2, when the Soviets destroyed the Canadian team 7-3, that truly changed the course of hockey history. Lawrence Hill argues for the importance of October 25, 1962, when Nova Scotia decided to raze Africville in Halifax, as a key moment in Canada's race relations. Longtime CBC commentator Don Newman proposes that Canada experienced a major nation-building moment when, on February 2, 2002, it went to war in Afghanistan. 100 Days That Changed Canada includes contributions from Christopher Moore, Peter Mansbridge, Charlotte Gray, Dick Pound, Tim Cook, Adrienne Clarkson, Bob Rae, J.L. Granatstein, Rona Maynard, Peter C. Newman, Margaret Wente and Brian Williams. In the spirit of the bestselling 100 Photos That Changed Canada, 100 days that changed Canada forever are reflected in words and pictures.
