And occupational safety and health (OSH) is becoming even more complex as workers move away from the long-term, fixed-site, employer relationship. This book looks at worker safety in the changing workplace and the challenge of ensuring a supply of top-notch OSH professionals. Recommendations are addressed to federal and state agencies, OSH organizations, educational institutions, employers, unions, and other stakeholders. The committee reviews trends in workforce demographics, the nature of work in the information age, globalization of work, and the revolution in health care deliveryâ€"exploring the implications for OSH education and training in the decade ahead. The core professions of OSH (occupational safety, industrial hygiene, and occupational medicine and nursing) and key related roles (employee assistance professional, ergonomist, and occupational health psychologist) are profiled-how many people are in the field, where they work, and what they do. The book reviews in detail the education, training, and education grants available to OSH professionals from public and private sources.

Book Safety and Health in Confined Spaces

Download or read book Safety and Health in Confined Spaces written by Neil McManus and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-18 with total page 916 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Safety and Health in Confined Spaces goes beyond all other resources currently available. International in scope, the 15 chapters and 10 appendices cover every facet of this important subject. A significant addition to the literature, this book provides a confined space focus to other health and safety concepts. Confined spaces differ from other workspaces because their boundary surfaces amplify the consequences of hazardous conditions. The relationship between the individual, the boundary surface, and the hazardous condition is the critical factor in the onset, outcome, and severity of accidents in these workspaces. The author uses information about causative and other factors from analysis of fatal accidents to develop a hazard assessment and hazard management system. He provides a detailed, disciplined protocol, covering 36 hazardous conditions, that addresses all segments of work--the undisturbed space, entry preparation, work activity, and emergency preparedness and response--and illustrates how to use it. Safety and Health in Confined Spaces gives you the tools you need for preventing and responding to accidents.

Download or read book Regulation written by Anthony I Ogus and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2004-10-15 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a reprint of Anthony Ogus' classic study of regulation, first published in the 1990s. It examines how, since the last decades of the twentieth century there have been fundamental changes in the relationship between the state and industry. With the aid of economic theory Anthony Ogus critically examines the ways in which public law has been adapted to the task of regulating industrial activity and provides a systematic overview of the theory and forms of social and economic regulation. In particular, he explores the reasons why governments regulate, for which, broadly speaking, two theoretical frameworks exist. First 'public interest' theories determine that regulation should aim to improve social and economic welfare. Second, 'economic' theories suggest that regulation should aim to satisfy the demands of private interests. The book also looks at the evolution of the forms of regulation in Britain, extending to the policies of privatization and deregulation which were so characteristic of the period. The author skilfully evaluates the advantages and disadvantages of the different forms of regulation, particularly in the light of the two theoretical frameworks, but also by involving an analysis of how firms respond to the various kinds of incentives and controls offered by government. A significant feature of the book is its analysis of the choices made by governments between the different forms of regulation and the influence exerted by interest groups (including bureaucrats) and EC law.
