Book excerpt: Did he ever play Hamlet? Has she worked in television? What was the title of his first novel? Under whom did she study? How many children has he? Answers to such questions about contemporary Canadian artists have often been difficult, even impossible, to find. This series has been created to provide the answers; it covers creative and performing artists who have contributed as individuals to the culture of Canada in the twentieth century. Each volume in the series presents a cross-section of many different kinds of artists: authors of imaginative works, artists and sculptors, musicians (performers, composers, conductors, and directors), and performing artists in ballet, modern dance, radio, theatre, television, and motion pictures; directors, designers, and producers in theatre, cinema, radio, television, and the dance; choreographers and, for cinema, cartoonists and animators. Within each category of art is included a selection of those who have achieved national and international recognition; those who have been recognized locally, and some, now deceased, who markedly influenced their contemporaries locally, nationally, or internationally. This is not a critical compilation; rather it is an objective and factual reference work for those interested in contemporary Canadian culture. Information was collected by painstaking research in a wide variety of sources, and wherever possible it has been verified by the artist to make each entry as accurate and comprehensive as possible.

Book Elements of Contemporary Clarinet Technique

Download or read book Elements of Contemporary Clarinet Technique written by Andrew Hudson and published by . This book was released on 2023-07-30 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by the periodic table of elements, "Elements of Contemporary Clarinet Technique" takes the advancing clarinetist through a series of progressive etudes that address techniques both fundamental and extended. Chock full of new etudes for a new age, "Elements of Contemporary Clarinet Technique" explores foundational techniques like effective slurring, light articulation, and stable breath support while also delving into modern processes like circular breathing, double and slap tonguing, multiphonics, and more. Each etude, crafted by award-winning composer Roger Zare, draws its inspiration from a different element of the periodic table: "Gold" shimmers with lustrous connections, while "Oxygen" offers a chance for extreme breath control under musical duress and "Neon" sparkles in the upper register. Each etude is introduced and explored with a written masterclass and performance guide from acclaimed clarinetist Andy Hudson, who breaks down the technical and musical challenges of each etude, making this an invaluable resource for the progressing clarinetist. A true collaboration between composer and pedagogue, "Elements of Contemporary Clarinet Technique" sees longtime collaborators Roger Zare and Andy Hudson set the standard for the modern etude book in terms of progressive growth, nuanced musical development, and performance application.

Book The Bohlen Pierce Clarinet

  • Publisher : BoD – Books on Demand
  • Release : 2020-09-28
  • ISBN : 3752608218
  • Pages : 224 pages

Download or read book The Bohlen Pierce Clarinet written by Nora-Louise Müller and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract Repertoire in Bohlen-Pierce (BP) tuning has grown significantly since the debut of BP clarinets in 2008. Literature specifically dedicated to the BP clarinet, on the other hand, is still rare. Practice-led research conducted by the author provides useful materials about the BP soprano and tenor clarinets, such as contemporary playing techniques or acoustical conditions. The current state of repertoire is shown; exemplary analyses of compositions featuring one or more BP clarinets are given. A new BP specific notation is introduced; it has been developed from a practical point of view and has gained great acceptance among musicians performing in BP. Beside using BP as the (only) tuning system in compositions, it is also possible to combine BP with other scales to achieve effects of extended tonalities or rich microtonal structures. Multiphonics as a very popular phenomenon in contemporary woodwind music are highlighted, providing fingering charts and notational suggestions for both BP soprano and BP tenor clarinets. The theoretical idea of a BP third-tone scale (39div3) is transferred into practice by providing fingering charts and practical advice to performers and composers. I hope that this thesis can give inspiration and advice to those motivated to compose for and perform on BP clarinets, and that BP clarinets will gain the popularity they deserve in contemporary music performance. The BP clarinet and its growing repertoire may widen the range of expression of dedicated clarinet players.
