Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Schemes of arrangement are an important and flexible mechanism, which can be used to reorganise a company's capital. They have undergone something of a renaissance since the global financial crisis, particularly as a debt restructuring device, since effective tools were needed to deal with financial distress. Schemes have also become the mechanism of choice for recommended takeovers. In order to understand their current popularity, this book examines the use of both member and creditor schemes, and compares their advantages and disadvantages to the alternatives that are available. It performs a critical, contextual and comparative analysis of schemes and their uses, and puts forward reform proposals that are designed to ensure that schemes continue to develop as an indispensable tool for companies for the future.

Book The Cambridge Handbook of Environmental Justice and Sustainable Development

Download or read book The Cambridge Handbook of Environmental Justice and Sustainable Development written by Sumudu A. Atapattu and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-01 with total page 825 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the global endorsement of the Sustainable Development Goals, environmental justice struggles are growing all over the world. These struggles are not isolated injustices, but symptoms of interlocking forms of oppression that privilege the few while inflicting misery on the many and threatening ecological collapse. This handbook offers critical perspectives on the multi-dimensional, intersectional nature of environmental injustice and the cross-cutting forms of oppression that unite and divide these struggles, including gender, race, poverty, and indigeneity. The work sheds new light on the often-neglected social dimension of sustainability and its relationship to human rights and environmental justice. Using a variety of legal frameworks and case studies from around the world, this volume illustrates the importance of overcoming the fragmentation of these legal frameworks and social movements in order to develop holistic solutions that promote justice and protect the planet's ecosystems at a time of intensifying economic and ecological crisis.

Book A Canadian Healthcare Innovation Agenda

Download or read book A Canadian Healthcare Innovation Agenda written by A. Scott Carson and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2018-04-30 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection is the result of a 2016 national leaders conference sponsored by Queen’s University to explore the prospects for a pan-Canadian healthcare innovation strategy. The conference themes were inspired by the 2015 report of the federally commissioned Advisory Panel on Healthcare Innovation, led by David Naylor, which examined how the federal government could support innovation. A Canadian Healthcare Innovation Agenda features original commissioned chapters from academics and healthcare leaders addressing a range of issues such as the meaning of healthcare innovation, how a national healthcare agency and investment fund could be governed, the need for big data and evidence, adding value through Canadian supply-chain management, overcoming regulatory barriers to innovation, policy innovations for indigenous, military and elderly populations, the role of medical professions in promoting innovation, education, and the development of medical innovators. The Canadian healthcare system is so fragmented that any thought of a system-wide strategy for healthcare innovation is considered a far-distant ideal at best. This book presents a contrary view, outlining an agenda for Canadian healthcare innovation. It shows that Canada does indeed have the building blocks for innovation, and concludes that the time to act is now.

Book Giving Meaning to Economic Social and Cultural Rights

Download or read book Giving Meaning to Economic Social and Cultural Rights written by Isfahan Merali and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2011-07-07 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, arguably the founding document of the human rights movement, fully embraces economic, social, and cultural rights, as well as civil and political rights, within its text. However, for most of the fifty years since the Declaration was adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations, the focus of the international community has been on civil and political rights. This focus has slowly shifted over the past two decades. Recent international human rights treaties—such as the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women—grant equal importance to protecting and advancing nonpolitical rights. In this collection of essays, Isfahan Merali, Valerie Oosterveld, and a team of human rights scholars and activists call for the reintegration of economic, social, and cultural rights into the human rights agenda. The essays are divided into three sections. First the contributors examine traditional conceptualizations of human rights that made their categorization possible and suggest a more holistic rights framework that would dissolve such boundaries. In the second section they discuss how an integrated approach actually produces a more meaningful analysis of individual economic, social, and cultural rights. Finally, the contributors consider how these rights can be monitored and enforced, identifying ways international human rights agencies, NGOs, and states can promote them in the twenty-first century.
