Book excerpt: Between 1950 and 1953, nearly 30,000 Canadian volunteers joined the effort to contain communist incursions into South Korea and support the fledgling United Nations. All the services were there and all served with distinction. The Royal Canadian Navy led a daring rescue of troops from the port of Chinnampo in 1950; members of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry won the highest US battle honour at Kap’yong in April 1951; the Vandoos turned the tide at Hill 355; and twice – at Hill 355 in October 1952 and Hill 187 in May 1953 – members of the Royal Canadian Regiment held firm against forces that greatly outnumbered them. The navy and the infantry were bolstered by the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery and Lord Strathcona’s Horse tanks, as well as members of the service, medical, engineers, provost, chaplain and intelligence corps. Still more, from the RCAF Thunderbird Squadron, took part in the Korean Airlift – three years of non-stop supply flights across the Pacific.

Book They Fought Valiantly for Their Country S Survival

Download or read book They Fought Valiantly for Their Country S Survival written by Bob Orrick and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-01-28 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They Fought Valiantly for Their Countrys Survival contains the personal accounts of South Korean soldiers and marines who fought for the survival of their country following the North Korean sneak attack on South Korea that was the start of the Korean War 25 June 195027 July 1953. Inasmuch as a ceasefire or cessation of hostilities was signed at Panmunjom on 27 July 1953 and the shooting stopped, the Korean War remains very much in the forefront of world news as a declaration of peace has not been signed as the 2.5-mile wide demilitarized zone between the two Koreas attests in stark, menacing evidence. The accounts that are contained within this book are real and reveal in clear prose the devastation, the pain, the agony, the danger, the fear, the betrayal, distress, wounds, death, turmoil, separation, and love of family that was the constant with these South Koreans as they stood in the forefront and stopped the evil known as communism and set in place the seed that culminated in the tearing down of the Berlin Wall a few decades later. The South Koreans who fought valiantly during the thirty-seven-month Korean War, stopped the spread of communism in the Far East. Truly, theirs was a heroic stand that the free world can applaud today.

  • Pages : 168 pages

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Personal accounts of more than thirty men and women who served with the American and Canadian forces in Korea during the years 1950-1953. What is it like to go to war? How does a war affect the men and women who are fighting in it? Here are vivid first-person accounts that address these questions and offer powerful insights into what it means to serve in the armed forces in an unfamiliar country far from home. Award-winning author Linda Granfield has collected the stories of thirty-two men and women who were part of the U.S. and Canadian forces in Korea during the years 1950-53, and has set them against a backdrop of historical and geographical information. The veterans in this book represent a variety of service areas, such as medical, supplies, infantry, and naval. Their sometimes grim, sometimes lighthearted recollections are illustrated with their own personal photographs. From a prisoner of war's gripping description of being held captive for nearly three years to a machine gunner's fond memories of the canned hamburgers and bacon his battalion loved to eat, these stories emphasize the human face of war at a time when it's more important than ever to try to understand the many different ways that war changes people's lives. A foreword by renowned author Russell Freedman relates some of his own experiences while serving in Korea with the Counter Intelligence Corps. Also included are a timeline, glossary, bibliography, Internet resources, and index.
