Book Canada and the Canadian Question Classic Reprint

Download or read book Canada and the Canadian Question Classic Reprint written by Goldwin Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-30 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canada and the Canadian Question Where the subject is so complex and so disjointed, to devise a satisfactory arrangement is not easy. Writers and readers of the history of the Dominion too well know how wanting it is in unity. For the special purpose of this work, which is neither elaborate description nor detailed history, but the presentation of a case and of a problem, it seemed best first, briefly to delineate the Provinces, which are the factors of the case, then to sketch their political history, leading up to Confederation, then to give an account of the Confederation itself, with its political sequel, up to the present time, and finally to propound the problem. The general reader, if any one answering to that description ever takes up this work, may skip the chapter on the Federal polity, the subject of which to the reader specially interested in Colonial institutions will probably seem the most important of all. To impart anything like liveliness to a discussion of the British North America Act one must have the touch of Voltaire. Book Canada and the Canadian Question

Download or read book Canada and the Canadian Question written by Goldwin Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canada and the Canadian Question Whoever wishes to know what Canada is, and to understand the Canadian question, should begin by turning from the political to the natural map. The political map displays a vast and unbroken area of territory, extending from the boundary of the United States up to the North Pole, and equalling or surpassing the United States in magnitude. The physical map displays four separate projections of the cultivable and habitable part of the Continent into arctic waste. The four vary greatly in size, and one of them is very large. They are, beginning from the east, the Maritime Provinces - Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island; Old Canada, comprising the present Provinces of Quebec and Ontario; the newly-opened region of the North-West, comprising the Province of Manitoba and the districts of Alberta, Athabasca, Assiniboia, and Saskatchewan; and British Columbia. The habitable and cultivable parts of these blocks of territory are not contiguous, but are divided from each other by great barriers of nature, wide and irreclaimable wildernesses or manifold chains of mountains. Book Disallowance Classic Reprint

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Disallowance The Disallowance Question, as it is popularly called, cannot be treated by Parliament as a party question. Whatever ardent politicians may desire, the people of Canada decline to range themselves in party attitude on a question of such moment to the commercial future of the country; and the will of the people may be expected to find suitable expression in a Canadian Parliament. The question before the people of Canada to-day is a simple but a momentous one. Not since the foundations of our Confederation were laid have graver issues been presented for final settlement. Seldom in our history as a people are we likely to be called upon to deal with a question bearing so intimately and so seriously upon our commercial and political future. Book Summary of Canadian History

Download or read book Summary of Canadian History written by J. A. Boyd and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Summary of Canadian History: With Questions Adapted to Each Paragraph Many histories of Canada have been written, but there is not one which, while comprehending in brief space the story of our three historic centuries, is not either confused and fragmentary in arrangement, or disfigured by gross blunders; while some are remarkable for a union of both defects. To supply a deficiency, therefore, the present little summary has been written. It aims at giving, in small compass, a full as well as accurate and connected relation of the chief incidents pertaining to Canadian History, from the time of Cartier's discovery to the present day. Many omissions have been supplied, many superfluities retrenched, many errors corrected, which deform popular text-books on this subject. The general arrangement adopted is that which has been naturally suggested by the progress of events. The questions appended to each chapter will be found available in the schoolroom. It is hoped that a book has thus been produced which will mainly serve for the instruction of Canadian youth in their country's history, and may be useful also as a manual of reference to all classes of readers.
