Book Making Managers in Canada 1945 1995

Download or read book Making Managers in Canada 1945 1995 written by Jason Russell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-06-14 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Management education and training was a key influence on Canadian capital and labour in the post-World War II decades, however it has been the subject of comparatively little academic inquiry. In many ways, historians have frequently learned about management behavior in unionized workplaces by examining labor-management relations. The management experience has thus often been seen through the eyes of rank-and-file workers rather than from the perspective of managers themselves. This book discusses how managers were trained and educated in Canada in the years following the Second World War. Making Managers in Canada, 1945 – 1995 seeks to shed light on the experience of workers who have not received much attention in business history: managers. This book approaches management training from both institutional and social history perspectives. Drawing from community colleges, universities, and companies in British Columbia, Ontario, and Québec, this book reveals the nature of management education and training in English and French Canada, It integrates institutional analysis, and examines how factors such as gender and social class shaped the development of Canadian management in the post-war years and illustrates the various international influences on Canadian management education.

Book excerpt: A #1 national bestseller, winner of the QWF Mavis Gallant Prize for Non-Fiction, and finalist for the BC National Award for Canadian Non-Fiction and the Shaughnessy Cohen Prize for Political Writing, The Morning After is a sly, insightful and wonderfully original book from one of Canada's most popular political analysts, Chantal Hébert, and one of Quebec's top political broadcasters, Jean Lapierre. Only the most fearless of political journalists would dare to open the old wounds of the 1995 Quebec referendum, a still-murky episode in Canadian history that continues to defy our understanding. The referendum brought one of the world's most successful democracies to the brink of the unknown, and yet Quebecers' attitudes toward sovereignty continue to baffle the country's political class. Interviewing seventeen key political leaders from the duelling referendum camps, Hébert and Lapierre begin with a simple premise: asking what were these political leaders' plans if the vote had gone the other way. Even two decades later, their answers may shock you. And in asking an unexpected question, these veteran political observers cleverly expose the fractures, tensions and fears that continue to shape Canada today.

Book Environmental Problem Solving

Download or read book Environmental Problem Solving written by Alan Miller and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human influences create both environmental problems and barriers to effective policy aimed at addressing those problems. In effect, environmental managers manage people as much as they manage the environment. Therefore, they must gain an understanding of the psychological and sociopolitical dimensions of environmental problems that they are attempting to resolve. In Environmental Problem Solving, Alan Miller reappraises conventional analyses of environmental problems using lessons from the psychosocial disciplines. He combines the disciplines of ecology, political sociology and psychology to produce a more adaptive approach to problem-solving that is specifically geared toward the environmetal field. Numerous case studies demonstrate the practical application of theory in a way that is useful to technical and scientific professionals as well as to policy makers and planners. Alan Miller is Professor of Psychology at the University of New Brunswick.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the face of the need to make choices between programs that governments consider essential to administer themselves and programs that may be discontinued or transferred to other organizations, a new vision of government functioning has emerged, notably with greater emphasis on performance and results. This book analyzes the impact of an increasingly influential paradigm called new public management on the public services of Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. Major challenges common to these countries include powerful bureaucracies, restrictive organizational designs, and rigid rules and procedures blocking change. The book reviews various reform initiatives launched in response to those challenges in the areas of career public service, statecraft, administrative fragmentation and centralization, consolidation and devolution of authority, moving beyond bureaucracy, enhancing performance, and securing accountability. The book concludes with an agenda for public management.

Book Attitude or Latitude

Download or read book Attitude or Latitude written by Graham R. Braithwaite and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australia has an enviable record for airline safety - No one has ever died in an accident involving a commercial jet aircraft in Australia. The reasons behind this have been the source of much speculation and theories tend to focus on issues related to the natural environment and even luck. However, with human error being present in arguably 100% of aircraft accidents, it seems reasonable that a good safety record is at least partly the consequence of human intervention. This text uses Australian aviation as a case study of a safe system to explore the interactions between the natural, operational and human environments. Based on doctoral research including a major survey of pilot and air traffic controller perceptions, the book is unusual in that it looks at positive examples in safety rather than taking the traditional reactive approach to safety deficiencies.

Book Women Public Policy in Canada

Download or read book Women Public Policy in Canada written by Alexandra Zorianna Dobrowolsky and published by Oxford University Press Canada. This book was released on 2009 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neoliberalism, the ideology that seeks to reduce state intervention in the economy and society and advocates maximum scope for the free play of market forces, has profoundly changed Canada's political and public policy discourses over the past twenty-five years. Women and Public Policy in Canada is the groundbreaking collection by public policy scholars from across Canada that establishes an understanding of neoliberalism's impact on Canadian women and public policy and also builds a framework for theorizing future policy directions. Students will discover how a wide variety of public policy issues relate to gender in Canada through first-hand exposure to current policy research on topics such as child care, employment insurance programs, health care, climate change, race and inequality, anti-violence, and same-sex marriage. Students will also engage with the possibilities for inconsistencies and interruptions in neoliberalism, making this text an indispensable resource both for those requiring an up-to-date understanding of the topic and for current and future designers of public policy in Canada.
