Book excerpt: Abstract: Heavy alcohol consumption and binge drinking are common among college students and can have adverse consequences (Wechsler, Lee, Kuo, & Lee, 2000). As such, it is important to identify those at the highest risk of consuming dangerous amounts of alcohol in order to implement preventative intervention strategies. The current study examined the predictive utility of performance-based measures of persistence, both physical (cold pressor) and psychological (mirror-tracing and anagram solution) in identifying those prone to binge drink and consume large quantities in a sample (N = 139) of college students. Individual difference factors, including affect regulation, distress tolerance, and impulsivity, were examined as possible mediators. The majority of the sample used alcohol (76.3%) and 54.0% reported binge drinking. Contrary to prediction, all forms of task persistence were unrelated to binge drinking or amount of alcohol consumed; however, lower persistence on the mirror-tracing task predicted meeting modified DSM-IV criteria for alcohol abuse (p = .03), suggesting that task persistence may be more related to alcohol problems rather than amount of alcohol consumed. Affect regulation and distress tolerance showed no direct effects. Impulsivity showed a modest direct effect but no indirect effects and did not mediate the observed relation between task persistence and problem alcohol use.

Book excerpt: Binge drinking (BD) is a highly prevalent pattern in most Western countries characterized by the intake of large amounts of alcohol in a short time followed by periods of abstinence. This abusive form of alcohol consumption is a regular practice in around a third of European and American youths. The high prevalence of BD at this age is of particular concern since adolescence and youth are in a period of special vulnerability to neurotoxic effects of alcohol, mainly due to the structural and functional changes going on in the brain throughout this key developmental stage. Evidence gathered during the last decade from animal and human studies seems to point to multiple brain anomalies associated with BD. In this Research Topic, we have collated a compendium of articles that address multiple aspects of BD during adolescence and young adulthood such as identification, prevalence, gender differences and neurocognitive anomalies associated with this excessive alcohol consumption pattern. These articles collectively highlight the breadth of current research conducted in this field but also the need to join efforts to improve the screening of the BD pattern, the characterization of its consequences as well as the translation of knowledge acquired in the laboratory into clinical practice. We remain confident that this Research Topic will contribute significantly to the understanding of BD and its consequences and will further stimulate high-quality investigation in this relatively new research field.

Book excerpt: The Importance of Measuring Alcohol Consumption To date, alcohol studies have attended far more to issues of alco hol dependence and the harmful consequences of drinking than to the level of alcohol consumption itself. This is, perhaps, not surprising since dependence on alcohol is believed to constitute a meaningful and distinct medical syndrome, regardless of the level of alcohol consumption associated with it (Edwards and Gross, 1976). Also, of society is generally more concerned with the adverse consequences drinking (e. g. , traffic fatalities, homelessness, health care and legal expenses, and academiclbehavioral problems in young drinkers), than with the quantity of alcohol actually consumed. Nevertheless, accurate assessment of alcohol usage is important in its own right in at least four contexts: 1. Evaluating the effectiveness of alcoholism and alcohol abuse treatment and prevention efforts. Such efforts include both applied evaluations of existing programs and formal, well-controlled efficacy studies on experimental interventions. These investigations require rigorous methodologies to assess outcomes precisely and contrast what may be quite subtle differences between programs and between pre treatment and posttreatment outcomes. Although these studies are usually characterized by the employment of multiple measures of success-including general improvements in social and physical functioning, reduction in degree of dependence, and resolution of problems directly resultant from drinking-it is by their assessment of changes in drinking behavior that they are potentially able to achieve the highest level of objectivity and exactitude.

Book excerpt: This report presents a review of the literature and reports the results of an investigation of the acute and hangover effects of ethanol on driving related skills, as well as focussing on 'event-related potential' data recorded in a sub-group of subjects participating in the project. An earlier study had noted an impairment of a relatively simple reaction time task 3 hours after a dose of alcohol, and the current study was attempting to determine whether this effect would be observed in the more typical 'morning after' situation. There were no statistically significant linear or higher trends in the dose/response relationship during the hangover session in any of the tasks employed in this study. However this finding does not preclude the existence of a subjective 'hangover' effect nor that performance on other tasks is affected by hangover, for reasons which are discussed in the report.
