Book excerpt: The eight essays in Campus Conversations provide some of the best scholarly work emerging from individual faculty learning communities in a statewide program called the Chancellor’s Learning Scholar (CLS) program. The CLS program began in 2018 as an initiative designed to include large numbers of the University System of Georgia’s (USG) about 12,000 fulltime teaching faculty in the USG’s statewide student success efforts. The approximately 2,000 faculty who have participated in the first two years of the CLS program learned about the eight pedagogies of student success which can help engage students more deepl, thereby retaining them and deepening their learning. These pedagogies include small teaching (based on the Jim Lang book), inclusive pedagogy, Transparency in Learning and Teaching (TiLT), course design, high impact practices (HIPs), brain-based learning, academic mindset, and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL). As teaching and learning scholarship, each essay has its origin in the topic for which the learning community was formed. The collection demonstrates the range of topics and many of the ways in which USG faculty have explored and applied these pedagogies to their own institutional contexts and courses. The essays selected for inclusion in this volume also embody different responses to the outcomes of the program as set out at the inception of the program.

The idea of a public is a cultural form, a kind of practical fiction, present in the modern world in a way that is very different from other or earlier societies. Like the idea of rights, or nations, or markets, it can now seem universal. But it has not always been so. Publics exist only by virtue of their imagining. They are a kind of fiction that has taken on life, and very potent life at that. Publics have some regular properties as a form, with powerful implications for the way our social world takes shape; but much of modern life involves struggles over the nature of publics and their interrelation. There are ambiguities, even contradictions in the idea of a public. As it is extended to new contexts and media, new polities and rhetorics, its meaning can be seen to change, in ways that we have scarcely begun to appreciate. By combining historical analysis, theoretical reflection, and extended case studies, Publics and Counterpublics shows how the idea of a public works as a formal device in modern culture and traces its implications for contemporary life. Michael Warner offers a revisionist account at the junction of two intellectual traditions with which he has been associated: public-sphere theory and queer theory. To public-sphere theory, this book brings a new emphasis on cultural forms, and a new focus on the dynamics of counterpublics. To queer theory, it brings a new way of seeing how queer culture (among other examples) is shaped by the counterpublic environment.

Sociologist Tim Clydesdale s new book, however, offers some rare good news: when colleges and universities meaningfully engage their organizational histories to launch sustained conversations with students about questions of purpose, the result is a rise in overall campus engagement and recalibration of post-college trajectories that set graduates on journeys of significance and impact. The book is based on a study of programs launched at 88 colleges and universities that invited students, faculty, staff, and administrators to incorporate questions of meaning and purpose into the undergraduate experience. The results were so positive that Clydesdale came away from the study arguing that every campus (religious or not) should engage students in a broad conversation about what it means to live an examined life.
