Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Campaign in Bulgaria 1877-1878 Of these, were immediately available for opera tions in Bulgaria. During the month of July the Egyptian contingent, men, arrived at Varna, and Suleiman's Montenegrin army of about men was brought by sea to Enos, and thence to Adrianople, thus making a total of on the theatre of war in Europe in the month of August. In Asia there was a vast recruiting-ground which supplied recruits during the whole war, but the number of them it is not possible to state. But in general terms it may be said that Turkey had men on the theatre of operations in Europe; and, until the collapse in the month of January, she replaced her losses by recruits, and maintained her army at about that strength. From the above statement it will be seen that in artillery the Turks had only something more than half of that possessed by the Russians, and that their regular cavalry was lamentably deficient in numbers. But, on the other hand, they were far superior in the quality of their arma ment; their artillery was all composed of Krupp's steel breech-loaders, of 8 and 9 centimetres calibre, which, in quality of metal, in range, accuracy, and lightness, were superior to the bronze pieces of the Russians. In small arms, the great majority of the troops were armed with the peabody-martini gun, calibre '4 5, made by the Providence Tool Company of Rhode Island - an arm which has no superior among modern breech-loaders; there were over of these guns on hand at the beginning of the war, and about were subsequently received. The rest of the troops were armed with the English Snider, calibre '50, a gun superior to the Russian Krenk. Only the cavalry on the Turkish side was inferior in armament to the cavalry of the Russians; the latter had the short Berdan, while the Turks had the Winchester, which, although a repeating arm, has such a small charge and short range as to make it a very inferior weapon.
