Book excerpt: Camp Pendleton was established in 1942 by the Navy Department as the West Coast training facility for the United States Marine Corps. Located in rugged northwest San Diego County, Camp Pendleton quickly became one of the largest training centers for infantry, aviation, and amphibious units and has long been the threshold for Marines embarking to participate in armed conflicts in the Far East and around the globe. From World War II to Operation Iraqi Freedom, Camp Pendleton has served as the backdrop and staging ground for troops, artillery, tanks, and infantry. Named for Maj. Gen. Joseph H. Pendleton, who pioneered Marine activity in San Diego, Camp Pendleton is situated on approximately 250,000 acres on the California coast and its access to land, sea, and air has been instrumental in cross-training Marines. Thousands of Marines have called "CamPen" home since its inception, including the oldest and most decorated Marine unit, the 1st Marine Division.

Book Sgt Reckless

Download or read book Sgt Reckless written by Robin Hutton and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-07-28 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times Bestseller! She wasn't a horse—she was a Marine. She might not have been much to look at—a small "Mongolian mare," they called her—but she came from racing stock, and had the blood of a champion. Much more than that, Reckless became a war hero—in fact, she became a combat Marine, earning staff sergeant's stripes before her retirement to Camp Pendleton. This once famous horse, recognized as late as 1997 by Life Magazine as one of America's greatest heroes—the greatest war horse in American history, in fact—has unfortunately now been largely forgotten. But author Robin Hutton is set to change all that. Not only has she been the force behind recognizing Reckless with a monument at the National Museum of the Marine Corps and at Camp Pendleton, but she has now recorded the full story of this four-legged war hero who hauled ammunition to embattled Marines and inspired them with her relentless, and reckless, courage.

Sometimes it eats at you." —Major Scott Huesing, Echo Company Commander From the winter of 2006 through the spring of 2007, two-hundred-fifty Marines from Echo Company, Second Battalion, Fourth Marine Regiment fought daily in the dangerous, dense city streets of Ramadi, Iraq during the Multi-National Forces Surge ordered by President George W. Bush. The Marines' mission: to kill or capture anti-Iraqi forces. Their experience: like being in Hell. Now Major Scott A. Huesing, the commander who led Echo Company through Ramadi, takes readers back to the streets of Ramadi in a visceral, gripping portrayal of modern urban combat. Bound together by brotherhood, honor, and the horror they faced, Echo's Marines battled day-to-day on the frontline of a totally different kind of war, without rules, built on chaos. In Echo in Ramadi, Huesing brings these resilient, resolute young men to life and shows how the savagery of urban combat left indelible scars on their bodies, psyches, and souls. Like war classics We Were Soldiers, The Yellow Birds, and Generation Kill, Echo in Ramadi is an unforgettable capsule of one company's experience of war that will leave readers stunned.

Book excerpt: An environmental journalist reveals how some California military bases are leading the charge in the fight against climate change. In California, the US military has begun to redefine how our national security operations relate to the destabilizing effects of climate change. Several bases have taken on a largely unrecognized yet crucial role in renewable-energy innovation and in preserving cultural and natural treasures. These facilities are going beyond environmental stewardship to align national defense with energy security and the protection of endangered species. In Unlikely Ally, environmental journalist Marilyn Berlin Snell takes readers through these bases to examine what twenty-first-century sustainable-energy infrastructure looks like; whether combat readiness and species protection can successfully coexist; how cutting-edge technology and water-conservation practices could transform life in a resource-constrained world; and how the Department of Defense's scientific research into the metabolic secrets of the endangered desert tortoise could speed human travel to Mars.

Book Camp Pendleton The Historic Rancho Santa Margarita Y Las Flores and the U S Marine Corps in Southern California

Download or read book Camp Pendleton The Historic Rancho Santa Margarita Y Las Flores and the U S Marine Corps in Southern California written by Breanne Robertson Phd and published by St. John's Press. This book was released on 2018-02-11 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Introduction: Approximately 50 miles north of San Di-ego, the historic Rancho Santa Margarita y Las Flores (now known as the Santa Margarita Ranch House National Historic Site and Las Flores Adobe National Historic Landmark) has borne witness to the sweeping and often dramatic events that produced Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton and the modern Marine Corps on the West Coast. Soon after the purchase of the ex-pansive ranch land in 1942, Marines established a permanent training installation and returned to Southern California as part of the largest nation-al mobilization effort for war since World War I. Nearby, the Santa Margarita Ranch House would serve as a primary residence for Marine Corps commanders for the next 60 years. The role of Camp Pendleton was essential to the development of an expeditionary Marine Corps both during and after the Second World War. Over the course of seven decades, the Ma-rines assigned to the West Coast facility have demonstrated tremendous mobility and com-bat efficiency as the nation's foremost "force in eadiness." As the primary installation for train-ing Marines for the Pacific theater during World War II, Camp Pendleton quickly expanded to ac-commodate the influx of recruits while simulta-neously developing a rigorous training program in amphibious operations. During the Cold War, the military post again served as the gateway for Marines bound for combat in Asia. The wars in Korea and Vietnam each required expediency and flexibility on the part of the Marine Corps, which swiftly rebuilt its forces for deployment abroad. A continued emphasis on amphibious landings combined with naval and air support facilitated Marine combat and counterinsurgen-cy efforts during these conflicts and secured the distinct mission and reputation of the Service for decades to come. In the post-9/11 era, Camp Pendleton continues to prepare Marines for rap-id deployment to humanitarian and combat op-erations around the globe.
