Book excerpt: Kent Dobson climbed Mount Sinai in search of the God who had eluded him. Instead he got bitten by a camel. Dobson was climbing the ladder of Christianity, too: a worship leader, teacher, and ultimately senior pastor of one of the largest and most prominent churches in America. But he was growing disillusioned with the faith, at least inside the shell of organized religion. One Sunday morning, he preached to his congregation, ÒI donÕt know what the word God even means anymore.Ó He soon left the church, but his quest for God became more intense than ever. In Bitten by a Camel, Dobson deconstructs much of what passes as Christianity, but on the foundation of Jesus and the Bible, he reconstructs a faith that is fulfilling, life-giving, and trueÑtrue to himself and true to God. DobsonÕs message is funny, poignant, and winsome. And it is ultimately, like the message of Jesus himself, hopeful.

Book Moses in the Qur an and Islamic Exegesis

Download or read book Moses in the Qur an and Islamic Exegesis written by Brannon M. Wheeler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relating the Muslim understanding of Moses in the Qur'an to the Epic of Gilgamesh, Alexander Romances, Aramaic Targums, Rabbinic Bible exegesis, and folklore from the ancient and medieval Mediterranean, this book shows how Muslim scholars authorize and identify themselves through allusions to the Bible and Jewish tradition. Exegesis of Qur'an 18:60-82 shows how Muslim exegetes engage Biblical theology through interpretation of the ancient Israelites, their prophets, and their Torah. This Muslim use of a scripture shared with Jews and Christians suggests fresh perspectives for the history of religions, Biblical studies, cultural studies, and Jewish-Arabic studies.

Book The Camel We Christians Have Swallowed

Download or read book The Camel We Christians Have Swallowed written by Ruth Richardson and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Underway is the dawning of a new day, as the bright morning sun - representing "the sun of prophecy (Micah 3: 6)," lights the night - the darkness by which prophecy is often explained. With the light of Jesus shining brightly on the explanation of prophecy - "For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy (Revelation 19:10)," we understand it and the rest of the Bible clearly. "Truth to Share," this book's logo, is almost unseen. The title, arched overhead, represents a rainbow full of promise. The cover art is by the writer, inspired by a friend's visualization. The title itself is a word-for-word "given," as is the final section, "The Rainbow," in chapter seven. "The Camel We Christians Have Swallowed," as stated in the introduction, is not the well-known "eye of the needle" camel. It is from Matthew (23:23-24) where Jesus accused the Pharisees of straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel, neglecting the weightier matters of the law, justice, mercy and faith. (More explanation of this title is in the introduction and chapter one.)

Book Early Kentucky Householders 1787 1811

Download or read book Early Kentucky Householders 1787 1811 written by and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 2009-06 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a consolidated list of approximately 34,000 names that appeared in the annual tax lists for Lincoln County, Kentucky, between 1787 and 1811. Forty-six of the fifty-four Kentucky counties that existed in the year 1811 are mentioned in the descriptions of landholdings claimed by Lincoln County householders during this period; in fact, nearly half of the counties were created out of the original Lincoln County boundaries. Thus a Lincoln County tax list can essentially be viewed as a statewide tax list. This is an important consideration because a tax list of this magnitude can actually stand as a substitute for the missing 1790 and 1800 Kentucky censuses. Mr. Sutherland's "householders" are heads of household who do not necessarily own the land on which they and their families lived. Taxpayers (i.e., householders) recorded in the annual tax lists between 1787 and 1811 are listed here in alphabetical order along with the date of the tax list, the number of the tax book and the page number of the original entry, and an enumeration of all other persons living in the household. As an aid to research the compiler has drawn up a complete "Surname Directory," which groups the phonetic variations of each name under a common spelling so that the researcher has only to search for the "common" spelling rather than the variants. This is a superb research tool
