Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Book Architectural and Historical Notices of the Churches of Cambridgeshire Classic Reprint

Download or read book Architectural and Historical Notices of the Churches of Cambridgeshire Classic Reprint written by A. G. Hill and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Architectural and Historical Notices of the Churches of Cambridgeshire The following architectural and historical sketches of some of the more interesting churches in Cambridgeshire, have been compiled from notes taken and collected by myself at various times during my residence at Cambridge. They do not, of course, pretend to give anything like V-an exhaustive history of the parishes, but all the more interesting historical facts have, I trust, been mentioned. The architectural criticisms (if such they may be called) are original, though since some of the churches were visited, restoration has, I believe, caused considerable alterations in the fabric, and incongruities of late date have been removed. It will be seen that I have not omitted noticing the late monuments or slabs of the 17th and 18th centuries, as, though these are not generally mentioned in such books as this, yet there is always some interest attached to them. A great deal of information has been obtained from the valuable Ms collections of William Cole (the antiquary of the last century) in the Library of the British Museum; and the Mss of Lysons, Layer and Blomefield, besides various printed authorities, have also been consulted. Book Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Classic Reprint

Download or read book Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Classic Reprint written by German Woodhead and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cambridge Revisited These chapters, with two exceptions, were originally con tributed to the Cambridge Chronicle (several appearing concurrently in the Cambridge Daily News). The friendly criticism, encourage ment and offers of information which their appearance called forth came as an agreeable surprise to me, and, in consequence, I have been tempted to present them again to the public, after revision and with many additions, in a more permanent form. But for the constant encouragement of Mr Ambrose Harding, who has advised and helped me with the book in all its stages, and whose support I cannot hope adequately to acknowledge, this little volume would never have been written. To Mr A. T. Bartholomew I am also much indebted for reading these pages in manuscript and giving me valued direction. Mr A. H. Cook has added to the usefulness of the book by providing a good index, and has been indefatigable in clearing up difficult points of information. Book excerpt: Excerpt from London in Literature A few years ago, before the war and the aftermath of the war filled the daily newspapers, one Of our journals printed an entertaining correspondence on this subject The dullest place in England. A strong Claim was preferred for this dubious distinction for March in Cambridgeshire, but the claim was vigorously contested because in March you can always watch the engine shunt. There is a prodigious mass of literature on London a good deal more, in fact, than the catalogues of some fine country libraries contain. An attempt to bring that vast array Within the limits Of a small volume is like the endeavour Of a tiny infant to span two octaves; but in the following pages enough is given to show that in London men have been able for many centuries to watch the engine shunt. Book The Way About Cambridgeshire and Fenland

Download or read book The Way About Cambridgeshire and Fenland written by George Day and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Way About Cambridgeshire and Fenland: With Numerous Illustrations I am not quite sure that a preface is needed, and yet it is a duty to acknowledge my indebtedness to those who have so kindly assisted me in various ways in rendering "The Way About Cambridgeshire" as complete as possible. My special thanks are due to Professor Bonney and Professor Babington for their notes on the geology and flora of the county; to Mr. G. H. Miller for Fenland notes, for particulars of Ely Cathedral and permission to photograph; to the Very Reverend the Dean of Ely, and to Professor Humphrey for particulars of Cambridge town. Ancient records have been hunted up for the interesting facts pertaining to bygone history, Church registers and black letter volumes have been studied, so that our "Way About" may be in a measure complete. Above all, the county has been travelled over by road, rail, and river, most of the towns and villages visited, local authorities personally consulted as to the present condition of things, and information gathered likely to be of use to those who may desire to travel within the county limits. Superfluous description has been avoided, leaving very much for the student to hunt up. I have merely described the leading features, omitting all historical detail which may be gained elsewhere. My residence in Cambridgeshire, and journeyings oft in all directions, convinced me that in this little known county there was much to interest the tourist, who only needed an indication of, and information on, the places worth visiting and seeing to enable him to get about quickly and cheaply without loss of time, or an unnecessary expenditure of money. This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ancient Cambridgeshire; Or an Attempt to Trace Roman and Other Ancient Roads That Passed Through the Country of Cambridge: With a Record of the Places Where Roman Coins and Other Remains Have Been Found It is not pretended that the subject treated of in this Essay is exhausted, but only that all the facts relating to it have been collected and arranged, as far as they are known to me. I have not knowingly neglected any source of information which is open to me. As was remarked in the preface to the first edition, this treatise has gradually attained its present size from a very small original. It consisted at first of a short account of the Roman roads which crossed each other at Camboritum (Cambridge); and did not describe them, except through a very few miles on each side of that place. As such it was communicated to the Cambridge Antiquarian Society on March 4, 1850. But circumstances caused delay in its publication, and it was gradually extended until it included the whole of the known Roman remains in the county.
