Book Around Cambridge Springs

Download or read book Around Cambridge Springs written by Sharon Smith Crisman and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2003-10-13 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1903, Cambridge Springs was described in Cutter's Guide as "the Great Health and Pleasure Resort of Pennsylvania." Located in northwestern Pennsylvania on the banks of French Creek, it fell halfway between Chicago and New York City on the Erie Railroad. From the promotion of the mineral springs in 1884, this town of some six hundred people grew into a luxurious vacation spot that included accommodations such as the Riverside Hotel, the Rider Hotel, the New Cambridge Hotel (now the Bartlett), and more than forty other hotels and cottages. Around Cambridge Springs not only celebrates this town's golden age of resorts and affluence but also remembers the people, such as W.A. Baird Jr.; the places, such as Alliance College; and the events, such as the devastating fires of 1897 and 1931, that have shaped this community over the last two hundred years.

Book A History of the Riverside Inn

Download or read book A History of the Riverside Inn written by Dale H. Docter and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hotel Riverside, Riverside Inn, The Inn at Riverside, and simply the Riverside: Since it opened in May 1877, locals and guests at the Cambridge Springs hotel in northwestern Pennsylvania have known her by all of these names. She was the first before all other eleven hotels and over thirty cottages that were to follow during the mineral water boom years of the 1880-1920s. She was the last to still serve as a hotel in the community and in the grandest fashion. Conceived as a sanitarium, revamped as a health spa, and transitioned into a hotel and resort, Riverside provided hospitality to the wealthy and for the common man as well as employment for thousands for 130 glorious years. That all ended in one devastating night of May 2, 2017, when fire took her to the ground by morning. This text by the members of the Cambridge Springs Heritage Society sets down the Riverside¿s story from the discovery of Dr. John H. Gray¿s mineral spring in 1859 through the changes in ownership and trends of the day to that unimaginable night of the fire. Through their research and photographs, the Heritage Society members endeavor to share the facts and images such that the Riverside will never be forgotten.

Book Cambridge Springs 1904

Download or read book Cambridge Springs 1904 written by Robert Sherwood and published by SCB Distributors. This book was released on 2022-09-06 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marshall’s Brilliant Victory In the spring of 1904, most of the chess world’s elite gathered in the sleepy northwestern Pennsylvania town of Cambridge Springs, where the first great tournament of the twentieth century was to take place. World Champion Emanuel Lasker topped the field. The champions of America (Harry Pillsbury), Russia (Mikhail Chigorin), France (David Janowski) and the Austria-Hungarian Empire (Carl Schlechter) were also playing. Among the other players in this historic fifteen-round-robin event was a young master from Brooklyn, Frank Marshall. He had some international experience, including defeating World Champion Lasker in their individual encounter at Paris in 1900. However, he certainly was not considered among the favorites at the time. Nevertheless, Marshall finished in first place, two full points ahead of the rest of the field, the only undefeated player. The story of this great tournament is superbly told by author Robert Sherwood. Each game is deeply annotated, while contemporary sources and rare archival photos nicely supplement the round-by-round account. With this victory, Frank Marshall took his place among the world-class players of his era. You are invited to join Marshall on his journey in this splendid account of his magnificent triumph in the first major international tournament of the twentieth century.

Book Escape from Siberia Escape from Memory

Download or read book Escape from Siberia Escape from Memory written by Paul Wojdak and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2024-04-22 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Wojdak’s father, Pawel, was born in 1912 in Novosibirsk, Siberia. During the 1800s, many Polish people were banished to Siberia for rising against czarist Russia’s repressive policies aimed to destroy Polish language and culture, and they eventually lived in Siberia for generations. By the 1920s, war and chaos followed the Russian Revolution, and Poles were cast as “enemies of the people,” fleeing east as refugees. Most died from disease, starvation, cold, or violence, including Pawel’s parents, and many Polish children were tragically trapped in Siberia—a seven-year-old Pawel among them. Later in life, living in Canada with his wife and son, Pawel physically could not speak about his childhood and refused to speak about his life as a young adult, but his memories were sometimes triggered by chance events, leaving mysterious tidbits for his son, Paul. Why could his father sing the Japanese national anthem? How did he come to see a tractor as a young boy in the United States? Inspired by his love for his father combined with a desire to understand Pawel’s complicated life, after his father’s death, Paul takes on the daunting task of trying to piece together his father’s past, determined to uncover the truth in the hopes of learning the story of a man who, despite all his hardships, was respectful, loyal, dedicated, and loving. Only knowing bits and pieces of his father’s childhood and knowing his father fought in World War II, Paul begins by connecting his father’s story with the stories of other Polish children and men in Siberia and Eastern Europe from 1917 to 1945. From there, he brings to light the remarkable story of the Polish Rescue Committee and their plight to rescue Polish children in Siberia after World War I and of the compassion of the Japanese people in harbouring these children. Following records of his father’s trail, he shares the incredible journey these children then took before finally arriving in Poland in late 1922, only to find their lives in upheaval again in 1939, when Poland was invaded by Russia and Germany. Escape from Siberia, Escape from Memory not only shares an extraordinary story of heroism and survival, but also explores the struggle to recapture and preserve cultural and personal memory and the impact of war on children and young adults.
