The Sports Hall of Fame Encyclopedia is a comprehensive listing of each inductee elected into one or more of these major sports halls of fame. Book excerpt: The hall of fame concept, once limited primarily to sports, is growing rapidly as more groups, organizations and associations are building shrines to honor their past, highlight their heroes and display their artifacts and memorabilia. It is estimated that there are at least 500 physical halls of fame throughout the world, a vast majority of them located in the United States. Whatever the actual number, this work documents more than 450 of them in more than 45 states and 15 countries. In addition to the halls of fame that most readers would expect to find, such as the National Baseball Hall of Fame, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the World Golf Hall of Fame, this work includes many more obscure halls of fame, such as the American Furniture Hall of Fame, Burlesque Hall of Fame, Cartoon Hall of Fame, Casino Legends Hall of Fame, Chicago Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame, Crayola Hall of Fame, Quackery Hall of Fame, and the World Kite Museum and Hall of Fame. The entries provide contact information, including the hall's address and telephone number, and in most instances, its fax number, website and email address, and hours of operation. The entries also alert readers to admission charges and provide a brief history of the hall and a list of notable inductees.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The earliest forms of ice hockey developed over the centuries in numerous cold weather countries. Since then, ice hockey has moved from neighborhood lakes and ponds to international competitions, such as the Summit Series and the Winter Olympics. Historical Dictionary of Ice Hockey traces the history and evolution of hockey in general, as well as individual topics, from their beginnings to the present, through a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary has more than 600 cross-referenced entries on the players, general managers, managers, coaches, and referees, as well as entries for teams, leagues, rules, and statistical categories. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about ice hockey.

Book Gordie Howe A Year in Galt Softcover

Download or read book Gordie Howe A Year in Galt Softcover written by David Menary and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-05-08 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Second edition softcover version of David Menary's "Gordie Howe: A Year in Galt" which highlights a pivotal year in Howe's youth - the year the 16-year-old left his prairie home for Galt, Ontario, and the 1944-45 hockey season. He was 16 years old that season, away from home for the first time, and too shy to attend the local high school. Howe became a fixture with the Galt Junior A Red Wings, even though he was unable to play any league games in the OHA. The team already had a western import - Terry Cavanagh, later the mayor of Edmonton - but coach Al Murray convinced him to stay with the team to practice and play exhibition games. Howe and some of his teammates recall many of the people associated with the team from that year. Subsequent visits back to Galt (Cambridge), and the historic arena which was reminiscent of the Olympia in Detroit, showed Howe at his off-ice finest; a kindly, considerate man whose characteristic humour and palpable decency endeared him to old man, maiden, young man and child.

Book Ken Reid s Hometown Hockey Heroes

Download or read book Ken Reid s Hometown Hockey Heroes written by Ken Reid and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2023-10-24 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Sportsnet Central host and broadcaster Ken Reid comes an inspiring and entertaining new collection of hockey stories about local legends who define the game and its values. In many communities across Canada, hockey lives in the nearby arenas and leagues that forge both decades-long rivalries and unbreakable friendships. Fans show up to cheer not for distant NHL superstars, but for the homegrown heroes who define their town. These players don’t always make it to the big leagues, but they inevitably become legends. In this entertaining collection, Canadian broadcaster and Sportsnet Central host Ken Reid tells their uplifting stories, from Pictou, Nova Scotia, to Kimberley, British Columbia—and everywhere in between. There’s Robbie Forbes, who arrived in Newfoundland in the mid-eighties still dreaming of the pros and ended up giving the town a dream of its own when he led the Corner Brook Royals to a Canadian Senior Hockey title. He also happens to be Sidney Crosby’s uncle. In a legendary Ontario community, the name Paul Polillo is spoken in the same reverential breath as Wayne Gretzky in their shared hometown of Brantford. There’s also the tragic story of George Pelawa, who may have been the inspiration for Tom Cochrane & Red Rider’s famous song “Big League.” And Tyson Wuttunee, an Indigenous player in Saskatchewan who, through hockey, found the family and home he’d always longed for. Featuring heartwarming stories of grit, leadership, and lifelong bonds, Ken Reid’s Hometown Hockey Heroes celebrates how hockey, and the values the game teaches, can shape our communities for the better.

Book Notable American Women with Czechoslovak Roots

Download or read book Notable American Women with Czechoslovak Roots written by Miloslav Rechcigl Jr. and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2019-09-16 with total page 812 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even though there exist only a few general studies on the subject of Czechoslovak American women, this is not, at all, a reflection of the paucity of work done by these women, as this publication demonstrates. This monograph is a compendium of notable American women with Czechoslovak roots, who distinguished themselves in a particular field or area, from the time they first immigrated to America to date. Included are, not only individuals born on the territory of former Czechoslovakia, but also their descendants. This project has been approached strictly geographically, irrespective of the language or ethnicity. Because of the lack of bibliographical information, most of the monograph comprises biobibliographical information, in which area a plethora of information exists. As the reader will discover, these women have been involved, practically, in every field of human endeavor, in numbers that surprise. On the whole, they have been noted for their independent spirit and nonconforming role.
