Download or read book Calvinistic Controversy 1835 written by Wilbur Fisk and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-16 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Calvinistic Controversy, 1835: Embracing a Sermon on Predestination and Election, and Several Numbers Formerly Published in the Christian Advocate and Journal IN this passage, the kindred doctrines of pre destination and election are brought into view. To discuss them; to notice some errors respect ing them, and to exhibit what is believed to be the Scriptural and rational view of these doc trines, is the proposed object of the present dis course. In doing this, much that is new cannot be expected._ The whole ground of this contro very has been examined and re-examined and the various arguments, on both sides, have been urged and opposed, by the most able polemics in philosophy and theology. The most, therefore, that can now be expected, is to give a concise view of the subject, in a form and manner suited to the present state of the controversy, and to the circumstances of the present congregation. Wilbur Fisk, a distinguished American Methodist theologian and educator, emerges as a key parent on this doctrinal discourse. Fisk's work, grounded in his dedication to Arminian theology, demanding situations the winning Calvinistic perspectives of predestination and election. In his book, Fisk meticulously dissects the theological underpinnings of Calvinism, advocating for an opportunity attitude that emphasizes human company in salvation. He posits that God's grace is universally available, and salvation is contingent upon a responsive religion as opposed to predetermined divine election. The "Calvinistic Controversy" turns into a platform for Fisk to articulate a more inclusive imaginative and prescient of God's grace, maintaining that salvation is open to all who pick out to accept it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its first publication in 1859, few works of political philosophy have provoked such continuous controversy as John Stuart Mill's On Liberty, a passionate argument on behalf of freedom of self-expression. This classic work is now available in this volume which also includes essays by scholars in a range of fields. The text begins with a biographical essay by David Bromwich and an interpretative essay by George Kateb. Then Jean Bethke Elshtain, Owen Fiss, Judge Richard A. Posner and Jeremy Waldron present commentaries on the pertinence of Mill's thinking to early 21st century debates. They discuss, for example, the uses of authority and tradition, the shifting legal boundaries of free speech and free action, the relation of personal liberty to market individualism, and the tension between the right to live as one pleases and the right to criticize anyone's way of life.
