Book excerpt: Excerpt from Calvin Defended: A Memoir of the Life, Character, and Principles of John Calvin Actuated by these views, the alumni of the theological seminary at Princeton appointed the author to deliver a discourse in vindication of the life and character of Calvin at their an niversary meeting in May, 1843. The substance of the following little work was accordingly de livered in Philadelphia, in the Second Presby terian church, during the sessions of the General Assembly. At the request of the alumni it has since been published in some of our religious papers, and it is now prepared, by the desire of the Board of Publication of the Presbyterian Church, for publication as one of their volumes. The main body of the work consists of an increasingly sympathetic, and at times amusing, account of Calvin's life up to his recall to Geneva. In the process, Barth examines and evaluates the early theological writings of Calvin, especially the first edition of the Institutes.

Book What Love Is This

Download or read book What Love Is This written by Dave Hunt and published by . This book was released on 2007-04-22 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many sincere, Bible-believing Christians are Calvinists only by default. Thinking that the only choice is between Calvinism (with its presumed doctrine of eternal security) and Arminianism (with its teaching that salvation can be lost), and confident of Christ's promise to keep eternally those who believe in Him, they therefore consider themselves to be Calvinists. It takes only a few simple questions to discover that most Christians are largely unaware of what John Calvin and his early followers of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries actually believed and practiced. Nor do they fully understand what most of today's leading Calvinists believe. Although there are disputed variations of the Calvinist doctrine, among its chief proponents (whom we quote extensively in context) there is general agreement on certain core beliefs. Many evangelicals who think they are Calvinists will be surprised to learn of Calvin's belief in salvation through infant baptism and of his grossly un-Christian behavior, at times, as the "Protestant Pope" of Geneva, Switzerland. Most shocking of all, however, is Calvinism's misrepresentation of God, who "is love." It is our prayer that this volume will enable readers to examine more carefully the vital issues involved and to follow God's holy Word--not man's teachings. "The first edition of this book was greeted by fervent opposition and criticism from Calvinists. In this enlarged and revised edition I have endeavored to respond to the critics." --Dave Hunt

Book Calvin and the Anabaptist Radicals

Download or read book Calvin and the Anabaptist Radicals written by Willem Balke and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 1999-10-13 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book has many fine features..... Dr. Balke has done thorough research on his subject and presented its results in an excellent combination of chronological review and systematic analysis. The principal significance of this book, however, is that it vindicates and in a sense rehabilitates John Calvin over against the Anabaptists, and does so without perpetuating the unfair criticism of the Anabaptists which was prevalent for a long time. The treatment is fair, balanced, and firm, and of genuine historical value. John H. Kromminga, President, Calvin Theological Seminary

Book Calvin

  • Author : Bruce Gordon
  • Publisher : Yale University Press
  • Release : 2009-07-21
  • ISBN : 0300159811
  • Pages : 423 pages

Download or read book Calvin written by Bruce Gordon and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-21 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the glory days of the French Renaissance, young John Calvin (1509-1564) experienced a profound conversion to the faith of the Reformation. For the rest of his days he lived out the implications of that transformation—as exile, inspired reformer, and ultimately the dominant figure of the Protestant Reformation. Calvin's vision of the Christian religion has inspired many volumes of analysis, but this engaging biography examines a remarkable life. Bruce Gordon presents Calvin as a human being, a man at once brilliant, arrogant, charismatic, unforgiving, generous, and shrewd. The book explores with particular insight Calvin's self-conscious view of himself as prophet and apostle for his age and his struggle to tame a sense of his own superiority, perceived by others as arrogance. Gordon looks at Calvin's character, his maturing vision of God and humanity, his personal tragedies and failures, his extensive relationships with others, and the context within which he wrote and taught. What emerges is a man who devoted himself to the Church, inspiring and transforming the lives of others, especially those who suffered persecution for their religious beliefs.
