Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THERE are certain things in life which are too beautiful to be forgotten, such as the love of a mother. Hence we treasure her picture. The love of soldiers who sacrificed themselves for their country is likewise too beautiful to be forgotten, hence we revere their memory on Memorial Day. But the greatest blessing which ever came to this earth was the visitation of the Son of God in the form and habit of man. His life, above all lives, is too beautiful to be forgotten, hence we treasure the divinity of His Words in Sacred Scripture, and the charity of His Deeds in our daily actions. Aeterna Press

SHEEN — A Classic! — Includes Illustrations by Giovanni Antonio Canal — Includes an Active Index, Table of Contents and NCX Navigation Publisher: Available in Paperback: ISBN-13: 978-1-78379-256-6 Sheen's reflections on what is now known as the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass—is one of his most dynamic and eloquent books. It is a vivid, inspiring explanation of the true meaning of the Mass, an explanation that is filled with wisdom and beauty. Leading us through the several phases of the celebration of the Mass, Sheen shows us its relationship to Christ's Crucifixion on Golgotha. He points out how the seven parts of the Sacred Ceremony are based upon the Lord's seven last words from the Cross. Under Bishop Sheen's brilliant guidance, we see the Mass in its true light, as the crowning act of Christian worship. It is the commemoration, the reenactment, the perpetuation of the Divine Sacrifice. In Calvary and the Mass Bishop Sheen not only gives a clearer, fuller meaning to the celebration, but also reveals a pattern of faith by which we may direct our lives to a higher fulfillment, embracing the example set by Christ in His self-sacrifice. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘We did not know; nobody has ever told us that!’ These were the words, spoken in tears, of Pope Pius XII on first reading passages from A Doctor at Calvary, Dr. Pierre Barbet’s scientific and reverent study of the Crucifixion of Christ. From an examination of the Holy Shroud of Turin—the authenticity of which Dr. Barbet accepts from medical evidence—a remarkable reconstruction of Christ’s terrible agony is presented in language that cannot fail to move the heart. What kind and what degree of physical torture did Our Lord suffer on Calvary? What was the medical cause of His death? These are among the questions answered in A Doctor at Calvary, one of the most significant contributions to Christological science in modern times. Christ’s preliminary sufferings—the agony in the Garden of Gethsemane, the scourging, the carrying of the cross—the wounds of the hands, in the feet, in the heart, the causes of the rapid death, and the entombment are recounted with the devotion and compassion of an ardent Christian and with a brilliant doctor’s accuracy of anatomical detail. ‘Without doubt this is one of the most gripping and moving books to have been published in many a year.’—Harold C. Gardiner, S. J. ‘As an aid to vivid viewing of the Passion, this book is peerless.’—Rev. John S. Kennedy, Balancing the Books ‘...a profoundly moving study of the Passion.’—Commonwealth ‘...a remarkable reconstruction of Christ’s agony and death.’—Jubilee ‘This volume is an outstanding example of how science can contribute not only to theology, but to solid Christian piety, and thus be an aid to love of Christ.’—The Voice ‘This is a gripping and powerful book of the highest stature.’—Voice of St. Jude ‘Sincere study of this book will enable us for the first time to understand what is behind the words: ‘Jesus suffered and died for us.”—America

Book The Construction of Martyrdom in the English Catholic Community 1535 1603

Download or read book The Construction of Martyrdom in the English Catholic Community 1535 1603 written by Anne Dillon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 746 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1535 and 1603, more than 200 English Catholics were executed by the State for treason. Drawing on an extraordinary range of contemporary sources, Anne Dillon examines the ways in which these executions were transformed into acts of martyrdom. Utilizing the reports from the gallows, the Catholic community in England and in exile created a wide range of manuscripts and texts in which they employed the concept of martyrdom for propaganda purposes in continental Europe and for shaping Catholic identity and encouraging recusancy at home. Particularly potent was the derivation of images from these texts which provided visual means of conveying the symbol of the martyr. Through an examination of the work of Richard Verstegan and the martyr murals of the English College in Rome, the book explores the influence of these images on the Counter Reformation Church, the Jesuits, and the political intentions of English Catholics in exile and those of their hosts. The Construction of Martyrdom in the English Catholic Community, 1535-1603 shows how Verstegan used the English martyrs in his Theatrum crudelitatum of 1587 to rally support from Catholics on the Continent for a Spanish invasion of England to overthrow Elizabeth I and her government. The English martyr was, Anne Dillon argues, as much a construction of international, political rhetoric as it was of English religious and political debate; an international Catholic banner around which Catholic European powers were urged to rally.

Book excerpt: What the Gospels don't reveal about Christ's sufferings, science does. While the Gospels relate only the barest essentials concerning the physical suffering of Jesus, Dr. Pierre Barbet addresses these gaps with scientific inquiry. A Doctor at Calvary provides a forensic pathologist's analysis of the Holy Shroud of Turin, which reveals the graphic account of Jesus's suffering at the hands of the Romans. Through a modern medical lens, Dr. Barbet examines the methods of infliction and physiological effects of each wound. He also delves into the historic practice and mechanics of crucifixion. This classic, with its engrossing and sympathetic portrayal of the Passion, has ignited religious devotion in clerics and laymen for over half a century. A Doctor at Calvary is a quintessential study for Lenten meditation and for those interested in understanding the crux of Christianity.

Book The Holy Hour and Calvary and the Mass

Download or read book The Holy Hour and Calvary and the Mass written by Fulton J. Sheen and published by . This book was released on 2023-12-18 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE HOLY HOUR, CALVARY AND THE MASS Two classic titles by Archbishop Sheen brought together in this special collection! World-renowned evangelist, Emmy award winner and New York Times best-selling author Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen understands the transformative power of the Eucharist and has written and spoken about it for years. This special edition contains two of Sheen's most sought after books. His 1936 book, Calvary and the Mass: A Missal Companion is coupled with his very popular Holy Hour Prayer Book. The Seven Last Words are like the seven parts of the Mass. And just as there are seven notes in music admitting an infinite variety of harmonies and combinations, so too on the Cross there are seven divine notes, which the dying Christ rang down the centuries, all of which combine to form the beautiful harmony of the world's redemption. Each word is a part of the Mass. THE CONFITEOR Father, forgive them for they know not what they do. THE OFFERTORY Amen, I say to thee, this day thou shalt be with me in paradise. THE SANCTUS Woman, behold thy son. THE CONSECRATION My God, My God, why hast thou forsaken me? THE COMMUNION I thirst. THE ITE, MISSA EST It is consummated. THE LAST GOSPEL Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit." In the Holy Hour Prayer Book, the reader will find insightful meditations given by Fulton J. Sheen and other great writers on the topics of: WHY MAKE A HOLY HOUR HOW TO MAKE THE HOLY HOUR THE INCARNATION OF OUR LORD AND SAVIOUR, JESUS CHRIST HOW CHRIST LIVES IN US TODAY HOW THE DIVINE LIFE IS LOST AND OUR FINAL END THE DUTY OF SELF-DENIAL GIVING GLORY TO GOD IN THE WORLD THE EUCHARIST, THE NEED OF OUR HEART OUR BLESSED MOTHER Given the importance of these books, and the impact they had on society, it seemed appropriate to reintroduce these reflections once again. A new generation of readers will be sure to enjoy these fine works that speak to the transformative power of the Eucharist.
