Book Working with Relational Trauma in Children s Residential Care

Download or read book Working with Relational Trauma in Children s Residential Care written by Kim S. Golding and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 2024-05-21 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy (DDP) is a therapeutic approach, based in attachment theory, which is used to support children who have experienced relational trauma. By consciously offering PACE (playfulness, acceptance, curiosity, and empathy), adults can help children - and each other - to feel more secure and open to others. This guide provides an overview of DDP and explores how it can be used to support children in residential care settings. Case studies, examples, and expert guidance from the authors' extensive experience demonstrate how to apply the principles of DDP to daily practice. From integrating the PACE model into conversations - both with children and colleagues - to balancing physical safety with relational safety in secure care situations, this book offers a way to build a culture of support throughout the whole structure of residential care settings.

Book The Wounded Other Stories About Sons and Fathers

Download or read book The Wounded Other Stories About Sons and Fathers written by Graham Leask, Ian and published by New River Press. This book was released on 2014-05-07 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A British writer's first collection of stories, set in a newly independent India, contemporary England, and the American South. In the title story, told from a mother's point of view, a teenaged son has been taken over with alcoholic binges; he vomits; he loses all cognizance of himself. As we learn more of the father, we find that he, too, is an alcoholic, a chain-smoker, and not far from death. The piece ends on a note of misogyny and violent helplessness, as if to imply like father, like son. Alcoholism, violence, class and racial prejudice figure throughout these stories, which are often garish and melodramatic, like the tale of a Britisher gone completely to seed in India (``Bombay Morning''). Leask makes it clear that he's brought his woes upon himself. The same self-destructive impulse grows a bit maudlin in ``Smoking Section,'' about a man who can't pay his bill at a sleazy diner. But in ``Daddy's Eyes'' and the fine ``Piggybank,'' Leask offers a more reflective view: in the first, an overworked, unhappily married father, whose own childhood was miserable, manages nonetheless to enter his small son's world with empathy and love; in the second, a young boy views his repulsive family's bankruptcy and abusive ways with the determination to do better. The question in many of these stories may be whether alcohol has led to unpleasant behavior, or whether these are unpleasant people who become even more unpleasant when they drink. Accomplished, but to trade upon some mythic eternal wound among men seems facile. The women here are no better. -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Book Back from the Brink

Download or read book Back from the Brink written by Alistair Darling and published by Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2012-06-01 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alistair Darling's long-awaited book will be one of the most reviewed, widely discussed, and saleable political memoirs of recent years. In the late summer of 2007, shares of Northern Rock went into free-fall, causing a run on the bank - the first in over 150 years. Northern Rock proved to be only the first. Twelve months later, as the world was engulfed in the worst banking crisis for more than a century, one of its largest banks, RBS, came within hours of collapse. Back from the Brink tells the gripping story of Alistair Darling's one thousand days in Number 11 Downing Street. As Chancellor, he had to avert the collapse of RBS hours before the cash machines would have ceased to function; at the eleventh hour, he stopped Barclays from acquiring Lehman Brothers in order to protect UK taxpayers; he used anti-terror legislation to stop Icelandic banks from withdrawing funds from Britain. From crisis talks in Washington, to dramatic meetings with the titans of international banking, to dealing with the massive political and economic fallout in the UK, Darling places the reader in the rooms where the destinies of millions weighed heavily on the shoulders of a few. His book is also a candid account of life in the Downing Street pressure cooker and his relationship with Gordon Brown during the last years of New Labor. Back from the Brink is a vivid and immediate depiction of the British government's handling of an unprecedented global financial catastrophe. Alistair Darling's knowledge and understanding provide a unique perspective on the events that rocked international capitalism. It is also a vital historical document.

Book The Last Tour of Archie Forbes

Download or read book The Last Tour of Archie Forbes written by Victoria Hendry and published by Saraband. This book was released on 2015-10-22 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Does for PTSD what Slaughterhouse 5 did for survivor guilt.” – Robert Morace. Returning from active service in Afghanistan, Archie’s life has fallen apart. Suffering from severe PTSD, he’s lost his job and his family and now he’s on the streets – desperately trying to cope in a hostile, austerity-strapped world that doesn’t understand the horror of war and the devastating effect it has on the mind. Archie has a chance to rebuild his life with his new exercise class, ironically called ‘Slim for Jesus’, until a friend goes missing and Archie, being the ‘local nut job’, is the prime suspect. This unforgettable book offers an utterly convincing (and often frightening) take on contemporary life, from the dislocated viewpoint of someone whose life is unravelling. With a dazzling portrayal of a deeply troubled man, this novel gets to the true nub of a condition often talked about but rarely considered in any great depth.
