Book The Difficulty of Being Good

Download or read book The Difficulty of Being Good written by Gurcharan Das and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-10-04 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why should we be good? How should we be good? And how might we more deeply understand the moral and ethical failings--splashed across today's headlines--that have not only destroyed individual lives but caused widespread calamity as well, bringing communities, nations, and indeed the global economy to the brink of collapse? In The Difficulty of Being Good, Gurcharan Das seeks answers to these questions in an unlikely source: the 2,000 year-old Sanskrit epic, Mahabharata. A sprawling, witty, ironic, and delightful poem, the Mahabharata is obsessed with the elusive notion of dharma--in essence, doing the right thing. When a hero does something wrong in a Greek epic, he wastes little time on self-reflection; when a hero falters in the Mahabharata, the action stops and everyone weighs in with a different and often contradictory take on dharma. Each major character in the epic embodies a significant moral failing or virtue, and their struggles mirror with uncanny precision our own familiar emotions of anxiety, courage, despair, remorse, envy, compassion, vengefulness, and duty. Das explores the Mahabharata from many perspectives and compares the successes and failures of the poem's characters to those of contemporary individuals, many of them highly visible players in the world of economics, business, and politics. In every case, he finds striking parallels that carry lessons for everyone faced with ethical and moral dilemmas in today's complex world. Written with the flair and seemingly effortless erudition that have made Gurcharan Das a bestselling author around the world--and enlivened by Das's forthright discussion of his own personal search for a more meaningful life--The Difficulty of Being Good shines the light of an ancient poem on the most challenging moral ambiguities of modern life.

This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growing interest in the history of Indonesia has made it desirable to have an English summary of the principal works of the Dutch historian Dr H. J. de Graaf, who in several books and articles published between 1935 and 1973 has given a description of the development of the Javanese kingdom of Mataram, based both on European and in digenous material. His works form a substantial contribution to the study of the national history of Indonesia. The Summary contains references to the paragraphs of the Dutch books and articles. This makes it easy for those readers who have a know ledge of Dutch to consult the original texts. The List of Sources for the study of Javanese history from 1500 to 1700 is composed of the lists in the summarized books and articles, and the Index of Names refers not only to the present Summary but also to the eight original texts. Many names of persons and localities in the Index have been provided with short explanatory notes and references to other lemmata as a quick way to give some provisional information on Javanese history.

Book Black Bloc White Riot

Download or read book Black Bloc White Riot written by A. K. Thompson and published by AK Press. This book was released on 2010-10-12 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are you taking over, or are you taking orders? Are you going backwards, or are you going forwards? White riot—I wanna riot. White riot—a riot of my own. —The Clash, "White Riot" Ten years after the battle in Seattle sparked an historic struggle against the forces of multinational conglomeration and American imperialism, the anti-globalization generation is ready to reflect on a decade of organizing that changed the face of mass action around the globe. Scholar and activist AK Thompson revisits the struggles against globalization in Canada and the United States at the turn of the century, and he explores the connection between political violence and the white middle class. Equal parts sociological study and activist handbook, Black Bloc, White Riot engages with the key debates that arose in the anti-globalization movement over the course of the past decade: direct or mass action? Summit-hopping or local organizing? Pacifism or diversity of tactics? Drawing on movement literature, contemporary and critical theory, and practical investigations, Thompson outlines the effect of the anti-globalization movement on the white, middle-class kids who were swept up in it, and he considers how and why violence must once again become a central category of activist politics. AK Thompson is a writer and activist living and working in Toronto, Canada. Currently completing his PhD in sociology at York University, Thompson teaches social theory and serves on the editorial committee of Upping the Anti: A Journal of Theory and Action. His publications include Sociology for Changing the World: Social Movements/Social Research (Fernwood Publishing, 2006).

Download or read book The Middle of a Wish written by Heather Conrad and published by . This book was released on 2020-11-17 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Middle of a Wish takes place in 2047 when Mom and her daughter, Star, leave their home in New Bay and set out on foot with a women's collective called Caretakers. They are part of the last wave of climate refugees leaving the Westlands. Sheltering in abandoned box stores, they join another group of refugees, families and artisans who are led by a guide named Riga. Riga is a person of indeterminate gender and ethnicity. Star and Riga have an intense attraction which develops on the journey east. Mom befriends a woman and her husband who are closer to Mom's age of seventy. Mom is, on rare occasions, prescient; and she believes in "the knowing," an ability to access knowledge through dreams. All the refugees are en route to Heartland, a region rumored to have miles of wind farms, underground cities, and blockchain banking. When the group arrives at the newly formed Valley Sea to take a ferry to the Sierra foothills, they encounter another group called Tinkers. The Tinkers fought on the side of the Guardians in the civil war of 2030. The Caretakers and artisans were on the side of the Reformers. There is a clash, a meeting, an agreement. Most of the refugees choose to board the solar ferry to cross the Valley Sea. Those who make it to the other side are surprised by what they find there. Some stay there, and others continue the journey across the mountains. Their discoveries en route are equally, although antithetically, stunning.
