Book excerpt: Iliad, my main character who suffers from amnesia after being shot by a pervert, is now pursued by another. Toerch is his name a man who will go to any extreme to get his way and his sights are on Iliad. So far she' managed to best him at every encounter they've had. But with every set-back, he's found new ways of retaliating. The last incident was especially hurtful for Iliad because the man shot two of her friends. One of them was Diana's brother, a policeman from California visiting her. The other was Trixie, a friend, who in the ensuing death struggle managed to put them both in the river. The raging waters separate the struggling duo and Toerch is picked up by Mahogany, an acquaintance of his. She takes him to the nearest hospital, but when he realizes she's done, getting out of there becomes a priority. He devices a clever plan and with her help, he's gone long before the law discover his whereabouts. Every officer in Athens wants to get their hands on Toerch, as does Iliad.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William H. Bonney, better known as Billy the Kid, is one of the most misunderstood characters in American history. The territorial newspapers and dime novels reaped great profits by promoting Billy as a cold killer. Those who knew the young man told a much different story. He was described as intelligent and humorous. He had fine manners and was very polite to women. He would not allow Mexican people to be disrespected. He went out of his way to help the old and the poor. Even his adversaries had only good things to say about him. Pat Garrett said that Billy was one of the finest gentlemen he ever knew. Charlie Siringo called him a prince of a human being. Governor Miguel Otero said that it was a terrible mistake that Billy's story had never been told by the Mexican people who loved him. Exactly who was this young outlaw? More than a hundred years after his death, we are still trying to answer that question.

Book Lucky Billy

  • Author : John Vernon
  • Publisher : Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
  • Release : 2008
  • ISBN : 9780547074238
  • Pages : 312 pages

Download or read book Lucky Billy written by John Vernon and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This book was released on 2008 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A myth-busting novel about America’s most infamous and beloved outlaw, Billy the Kid, from a critically acclaimed historical novelist According to legend, Billy the Kid killed twenty-one men, one for every year of his short life; stole from wealthy cattle barons to give to the po∨ and wooed just about every senorita in the American Southwest. In Lucky Billy, John Vernon digs deeply into the historical record to find a truth more remarkable than the legend, and draws a fresh, nuanced portrait of this outlaw’s dramatic and violent life. Billy the Kid met his celebrated end at the hands of Pat Garrett, his one-time carousing partner turned sheriff, who tracked Billy down after the jail break that made him famous. In Vernon’s telling, the crucial event of Billy’s life was the Lincoln County War, a conflict between a ring of Irishmen in control of Lincoln, New Mexico, and a newcomer from England, John Tunstall, who wanted to break their grip on the town. Billy signed on with Tunstall. The conflict spun out of control with Tunstall’s murder, and in a series of revenge killings, an obscure hired gunman called Kid Antrim became Billy the Kid. Besides a full complement of gunfights, jail breaks, and bawdy behavior, Lucky Billy is a provocative picture of the West at a critical juncture between old and new. It is also a portrait of an American icon made human, caught in the middle, more lost than brave, more nadve than principled, more of an accidental survivor than simply the cold-blooded killer of American myth.

Book Failure Is Not NOT an Option

Download or read book Failure Is Not NOT an Option written by Patrick Hinds and published by BenBella Books. This book was released on 2023-09-26 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wall Street Journal Bestseller Publishers Weekly Bestseller Patrick Hinds has failed. A lot. In fact, he’s kind of an expert at it—which is why he’s uniquely qualified to say that failure is a good thing. On paper, the chubby, poor, gay son of a lesbian who wrote pornographic letters to Jesus isn’t the person that you think of when you hear the word “success.” Yet Patrick Hinds has somehow managed to bungle his way through to become the successful co-host of True Crime Obsessed—a podcast with more than 200 million downloads. Before that, though, he failed at many, many things. Patrick’s life is a series of fiascos, missteps, and just plain bad ideas. An eternal optimist, he’s always thrown himself into everything he’s done, even when he probably shouldn’t have. He devoted himself to becoming an actor even though he was terrible, started a daycare even though he hated kids, and somehow had a disastrous time with Bea Arthur . . . even though he couldn’t be gayer. Both heartfelt and hilarious, Failure Is Not Not an Option lets Patrick’s signature storytelling style shine—and it’s also the only book to bravely and definitively declare: 1: Failing simply means that you tried (and if you try enough, eventually success will be an option, too). 2: Ted Bundy is. Not. Hot. By trying, and yes, failing at so many things, Patrick finally found his way—to a great career, a great husband, and a great family. Along the way, there were hurdles to jump, unexpected surprises, and no shortage of laughter. Failure is Not NOT an Option is a fun and outrageous read that will raise you up—and provide a soft landing pad for the next time you fall.
