Download or read book Spanish and Indian place names of California written by Nellie Van de Grift Sanchez and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-05-29 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of this book believes that every placename contains its unique history and romantics. By viewing toponyms as footprints of the distant epochs, Nellie Sanchez collects the names of the Spanish and Indian origin in the areas around San-Francisco and Los-Angeles and provides a fascinating historical insight into their roots. For example, a reader learns that a Mercy River obtained its name, as it was the first river met by thirsty men who had traveled over 40 miles over a dry valley.

Book American Language Supplement 2

Download or read book American Language Supplement 2 written by H.L. Mencken and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2012-04-04 with total page 817 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The DEFINITIVE EDITION OF The American Language was published in 1936. Since then it has been recognized as a classic. It is that rarest of literary accomplishments—a book that is authoritative and scientific and is at the same time very diverting reading. But after 1936 HLM continued to gather new materials diligently. In 1945 those which related to the first six chapters of The American Language were published as Supplement I; the present volume contains those new materials which relate to the other chapters. The ground thus covered in Supplement II is as follows: 1. American Pronunciation. Its history. Its divergence from English usage. The regional and racial dialects. 2. American Spelling. The influence of Noah Webster upon it. Its characters today. The simplified spelling movement. The treatment of loan words. Punctuation, capitalization, and abbreviation. 3. The Common Speech. Outlines of its grammar. Its verbs, pronouns, nouns, adjectives, and adverbs. The double negative. Other peculiarities. 4. Proper Names in America. Surnames. Given-names. Place-names. Other names. 5. American Slang. Its origin and history. The argot of various racial and occupational groups. Although the text of Supplement II is related to that of The American Language, it is an independent work that may be read profitably by persons who do not know either The American Language or Supplement I.

Download or read book California Names and Their Literal Meanings written by C. M. Drake and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from California Names and Their Literal Meanings: Also Other Primary Geography Names and Their Meanings Naming places is like naming babies, and it is a mere chance if the name fits. We name them after some great man, we name them after our own dear selves. We call a bay or a baby Pearl and we think we have described it. We even, at times, select fancy names of no meaning. This little list of names is neither complete nor accur ate. The California names, I have gathered in twenty years roaming around this State. I printed a small list, sixteen years ago, which has been going the rounds of the newspapers ever since. The translation of our Spanish names, is not always easy. Many are corrupt spellings, and the dictionary meaning may not be the true one. I give them as they were given to me by the old settlers, and if they did not know the true meaning they invented one. Book Junipero Serra

Download or read book Junipero Serra written by Steven W. Hackel and published by Hill and Wang. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A portrait of the priest and colonialist who is one of the most important figures in California's history In the 1770s, just as Britain's American subjects were freeing themselves from the burdens of colonial rule, Spaniards moved up the California coast to build frontier outposts of empire and church. At the head of this effort was Junípero Serra, an ambitious Franciscan who hoped to convert California Indians to Catholicism and turn them into European-style farmers. For his efforts, he has been beatified by the Catholic Church and widely celebrated as the man who laid the foundation for modern California. But his legacy is divisive. The missions Serra founded would devastate California's Native American population, and much more than his counterparts in colonial America, he remains a contentious and contested figure to this day. Steven W. Hackel's groundbreaking biography, Junípero Serra: California's Founding Father, is the first to remove Serra from the realm of polemic and place him within the currents of history. Born into a poor family on the Spanish island of Mallorca, Serra joined the Franciscan order and rose to prominence as a priest and professor through his feats of devotion and powers of intellect. But he could imagine no greater service to God than converting Indians, and in 1749 he set off for the new world. In Mexico, Serra first worked as a missionary to Indians and as an uncompromising agent of the Inquisition. He then became an itinerant preacher, gaining a reputation as a mesmerizing orator who could inspire, enthrall, and terrify his audiences at will. With a potent blend of Franciscan piety and worldly cunning, he outmaneuvered Spanish royal officials, rival religious orders, and avaricious settlers to establish himself as a peerless frontier administrator. In the culminating years of his life, he extended Spanish dominion north, founding and promoting missions in present-day San Diego, Los Angeles, Monterey, and San Francisco. But even Serra could not overcome the forces massing against him. California's military leaders rarely shared his zeal, Indians often opposed his efforts, and ultimately the missions proved to be cauldrons of disease and discontent. Serra, in his hope to save souls, unwittingly helped bring about the massive decline of California's indigenous population. On the three-hundredth anniversary of Junípero Serra's birth, Hackel's complex, authoritative biography tells the full story of a man whose life and legacies continue to be both celebrated and denounced. Based on exhaustive research and a vivid narrative, this is an essential portrait of America's least understood founder.
