In addition to the mere figures of output, we have included descriptions of the uses and characteristics of many of the materials, as well as a brief mention of their occurrences. The compilation of accurate and dependable figures is an extremely difficult undertaking, and the State Mineralogist takes the opportunity of here expressing his appreciation of the cooperation of the producers in making this work possible. A fuller appreciation of the value of early responses to the requests sent out in January will result in earlier completion of the manuscript. Statistics lose much of their value if their publication is unnecessarily delayed. Jenkins. "Minerals of California" has undergone several revisions, the last being Bulletin 113 by Professor Adolf Pabst of the University of California; the two previous editions were by Professor A. S. Bakle, of the same institution. The popularity of this book is evinced by the fact that the last edition of 3,000 published in June 1938 went out of stock February 1946, and there are now over 110 standing orders for the new book. The present volume has been greatly enlarged and completely rewritten by Professors Joseph Murdoch and Robert W. Webb of the University of California at Los Angeles. It represents one of the cooperative projects being carried on between the Division of Mines and the State University. Bulletin 136 describes 516 definite minerals besides many subspecies or varieties. This number represents about one-quarter of the total in the world. California is famous for the discovery of new mineral species, 56 of which were originally found for the first time in California, and 39 of these 56 species have, to date, not been found elsewhere in the world.
