Book California Latinx Transfer Students Experience from the Community College to the Four Year Institution

Download or read book California Latinx Transfer Students Experience from the Community College to the Four Year Institution written by Liudmila M. Flores and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to identify challenges and factors that California Latinx transfer students experience when they transition from a community college to a four-year institution. The study used the Transfer Receptive Culture (TRC) framework (Jain, Herrera, Bernal, Lucero, & Solorzano, 2011) to inform two and four-year institutions about the implementation of strategies and programs that facilitate the overall transfer experience. To this end, a convergent parallel mixed methods study was used. Using a total of 698 California Latinx transfer students' responses from the 2017 New Transfer Student Survey and two focus group interviews comprised of 10 participants, quantitative and qualitative findings were analyzed separately and then compared. The quantitative data revealed statistically significant correlations among student background variables such as marital status, number of dependents, income, friend and parent support and mediating variables such as finances, academic challenges, college environment and academic advising. Multiple regression analysis was performed to predict the level of certainty that students would earn a bachelor's degree. Moreover, focus group interviews and two open-ended questions of the survey were used to validate and help to provide a deeper understanding of the quantitative findings.Limitations of the study were described. Recommendations for two and four-year institutions and for future research were examined.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the transfer disparity persists among Latina/o/x community college students and continues to widen for those seeking to complete their baccalaureate degree, we asked ourselves three questions: (1) How do Latina/o/x community college students navigate the transfer preparation and decision-making process? (2) Once at the university, how do Latina/o/x transfer students negotiate their identities and lived experiences as they persist towards graduation and beyond? And (3) What policies, practices, and programs at both two-and four-year institutions facilitate access, persistence, and completion for Latina/o/x community college/transfer students? These reflections prompted us to seek answers. This is the first edited book to provide much needed theoretical and empirical insights on Latina/o/x students who enter postsecondary education through the community college. Our book offers a comprehensive outlook on the pre- and post-transfer experiences of Latina/o/x students written by scholars and scholarpractitioners working in the field of higher education. In addition, we include specific sections that speak directly to policies, practices, and theory that address transfer pathways for Latina/o/x community college and transfer students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this counseling project is to understand the challenges Latinx transfer students face when transitioning from two- to four-year institutions. In order to increase the educational outcome, more individualized support could benefit the Latinx transfer student population. This project proposes two interventions to help alleviate social, educational and psychological struggles. The first intervention, named Latinx Transfer Bridge Workshop , consists of a workshop tailored to the Latinx transfer community. The second intervention, named Latinx Transfer Bridge Group consists of an 8-week long psychoeducational therapy and discussion group, where more in-depth discussions can take place about gender, social justice, stereotyping, and race within a safe environment. The goal of the interventions is to boost self-efficacy and social capital in order to attain a higher satisfaction in the four-year institution, which could ultimately lead to higher retention rates.

Book The Transfer Process Among Latina o Undocumented Students from California Community Colleges

Download or read book The Transfer Process Among Latina o Undocumented Students from California Community Colleges written by Erick Sanzon Perez and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Numerous studies show that undocumented students are less likely to transfer to a postsecondary institution from a community college. However, many students have been able to transfer from a community college and it is important to highlight those narratives from a strengths-based perspective rather than a deficit point of view. This qualitative study explored the narratives of Latina/o undocumented students and how they transferred from a California Community College to a four-year institution. The experience in community college, support from others, and family were some of the reasons Latina/o undocumented students successfully navigated the transfer process. All of the participants indicated that they had to overcome various challenges but were happy with their college experience. Implications and recommendations for best practices and educational policy are provided.

Book Strength in Comunidad

Download or read book Strength in Comunidad written by Cyndy Elizabeth Garcia and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: As California’s Latinx population increases, so does the enrollment of Latinx students in institutions of higher learning. Latinx students disproportionally begin their higher education journey at community colleges. Of the Latinx students who do transfer, a limited number of students transfer to Research 1: Doctoral Universities. Once at the receiving 4-year institution, transfer students are oftentimes perceived as less academically prepared. By experiencing racial microaggressions, Latinx transfer students may discern messages as not feeling capable enough to succeed. Guided by Critical Race Theory and Solórzano’s model for understanding racial microaggressions, this qualitative study explored how seven Latinx undergraduate transfer students have been impacted by systemic racism, specifically racial microaggressions, at a public R1 university. The purpose of the study was to document and gain a deeper understanding of the racialized experiences of Latinx transfer students at R1 institutions. Four themes emerged from the findings: experiences with campus climate, transfer experiences, academic experiences, and empowerment through community. Findings provide insight into the type of racial microaggressions Latinx students experience, how they respond to these incidents, and the effects of racial microaggressions as participants navigate a 4-year institution as transfer students. Recommendations for policy and practice include increased diversification of staff and faculty, institutional transparency, dissemination of information, additional support for current resources, increased conversations about race and intersectionality, and development of spaces for Latinx transfer students. Lastly, recommendations for future research are also included.

Book excerpt: This qualitative study explores the experiences of Latina/o transfer students from a two-year to a four-year institution. Six Latina/o transfer student from the Pacific Northwest participated in one-on-one semi-structured interviews. The researcher utilized Critical Race Theory, LatCrit, Validation Theory, and Chicana Feminist Epistemology to bring forth the narratives of the participants to the study. From the collected narratives, five prevalent themes emerged, they are: a) self-doubts of education attainment, b) challenge and support in the transfer process, c) validation of educational path, d) sense of belonging, and e) perceptions affecting degree attainment. Each theme contributed in several forms to the transfer experiences of the participants before, during, and after. This study contributes to the literature available by focusing on Latina/o transfer students' narratives to understand their experiences navigating the transfer process. In addition, the researcher highlights contributing factors to a successful transfer process and recommends several supportive initiatives for student affairs professionals from two-year and four-year institutions to utilize on their campuses.

Book Transfer Student Success

Download or read book Transfer Student Success written by Ajani M. Byrd and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the largest post-secondary educational system, community colleges enroll nearly 35% of all college students (American Association for Community Colleges, 2014). However, the vast majority of students attending two-year institutions aspiring to vertically transfer (from community college to four-year institution), fall short of their academic goals and do not obtain a baccalaureate degree (Student Success Score Card, 2013). To this end, the extant literature has illustrated students of color, especially Latinx and African American students, transfer and graduate at disproportionately lower rates than their white counterparts. Qualitative researchers have explored this phenomenon; yet, often fall short of highlighting the specific experiences of students of color. Moreover, these studies regularly focus on the barriers or influencers that inhibit persistence, rather than exploring the narratives of students of color that successfully navigated the institutional systems. That said, this study investigated the experiences of Latinx students and how they overcame such obstacles towards four-year degree completion. Through a Critical Race Theory analytical lens, this qualitative case study utilized Padilla, Treviño, Gonzalez, and Treviño’s (1997) expertise model to frame the challenges faced by Latinx students, while using Yosso’s (2005) community cultural wealth to conceptualize how they successfully navigated their experiences. Each theoretical perspective helped me design, organize, and analyze data. Data collection primarily consisted of semi-structured interviews with Latinx students and university personnel. This study revealed the unwavering resolve students had to persist, despite encountering challenges on- and off-campus. Receiving support from campus allies, forming communities of resistance, and utilizing inherent skills, students spoke about how they successfully persisted and overcame various institutional deficiencies while pursuing their education goals. Findings have implications for community academic advisors, faculty, and future research.

Book An Examination of Latina

Download or read book An Examination of Latina written by Martha A. Rivas and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: California's three-tier public postsecondary system is meant to provide equal access to higher education for all students in the state. Yet even though Latina/os will soon make up the majority of students in K-12 education, the enrollment of Latina/os in the state's postsecondary institutions remains low. When compared to the percentage of Latina/os enrolled in grades K-12, Latina/os are underrepresented in all three segments of the state's postsecondary education system: California Community Colleges (CCC), the California State University (CSU), and the University of California (UC) (Ornelas and Solorzano 2004). This brief examines the transfer function from community college to four-year institutions as a critical segment of the education pipeline for Latina/o students. (Contains 3 figures.) Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond Free College outlines an audacious national agenda—consistent with, but far more comprehensive than, the current “free college” movement—that builds on the best of US higher education’s populist history such as the G.I. Bill and the community college transfer function. The authors align a wide constellation of higher education trends—online learning, prior learning assessment, competency-based learning, high school college-credit— with a rapidly shifting student transfer environment that privileges college credit as the pivotal educational catalyst to boost access and completion. The book’s agenda seeks greater productive investment in postsecondary education by privileging a single metric—lower-cost-per-degree-granted—as the animating driver of a transfer pathway that will fulfill the potential of its historical, progressive innovators. Beyond Free College’s goal is as simple as it is urgent: To galvanize higher education advocates in an effort to reorganize, reorient, and reignite the transfer function to serve the needs of a neotraditional student population that now constitutes the majority of college-goers in America; and in ways that advance completion, not just access to higher education.

Book Power to the Transfer

Download or read book Power to the Transfer written by Dimpal Jain and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2020-02-01 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Currently, U.S. community colleges serve nearly half of all students of color in higher education who, for a multitude of reasons, do not continue their education by transferring to a university. For those students who do transfer, often the responsibility for the application process, retention, graduation, and overall success is placed on them rather than their respective institutions. This book aims to provide direction toward the development and maintenance of a transfer receptive culture, which is defined as an institutional commitment by a university to support transfer students of color. A transfer receptive culture explicitly acknowledges the roles of race and racism in the vertical transfer process from a community college to a university and unapologetically centers transfer as a form of equity in the higher education pipeline. The framework is guided by critical race theory in education, which acknowledges the role of white supremacy and its contemporary and historical role in shaping institutions of higher learning.
