BOOK II. --IN THE CONTRA COSTA HILLS. CHAPTER VIII. THE ROSE-GARDEN. Margaret had been notified by telegram, of coarse, of the coming of her new guest, and met her husband at the front door with the most gracious of friendly greetings. Harold had so long avoided the company of women that he felt an almost boyish bashfulness as she appeared. He looked a trifle excited; the little flush was on his well-formed face; his eyes were afraid to meet hers. He only saw at a glance that she was radiantly beautiful. He stammered as he was introduced, and felt more like a fool than he had done for years, save in his* dreams. He was conscious, moreover, that the journey had made him dusty, and he felt that a drive during the California drought may be displeasing to a man's sense of neatness after he has lived for a while amid cleaner landscapes. It was not until after they had gone hp-stairo to their rooms, and had later rejoined Mrs. Eldon in the parlor, that ho found himself at case again. Then he observed with amusement that, after bis little flurry of confusion and admiration, all the suspicion and prejudice with which he had come to see her had forthwith vanished; he had already reached a centre of indifference, so to speak, where he regarded her only as a beautiful woman, whom he might or might not come to like. For her part, she was plainly eager to begin the business before them. She was full of some plan that caused her no small delight. But she checked herself to ask about the little journey, and how California scenery impressed Mr. Harold in these days; and then to lament the recent weather, which she had somehow found bad for her roses. Then she inquired of Tom whether he had seen father this morning. He had not. This fact caused her to...

Book Scientific Feuds

  • Author : Joel Levy
  • Publisher : Fox Chapel Publishing

  • Pages : 324 pages

Download or read book Scientific Feuds written by Joel Levy and published by Fox Chapel Publishing. This book was released on 2016-12-01 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most science chronicles present a triumphant march through time, with revolutionary thinkers and their discoveries following in orderly progression. The truth, however, is somewhat different. Scientific Feuds is a collection of the most vicious battles among the greatest minds of our time. It features such contests as Huxley and Wilberforce's debate on Darwin's theory of evolution, Franklin and Wilkins' fight over the discovery of DNA, and the “War of Currents” between Tesla and Edison (which ended with Edison electrocuting dogs and horses in a vain attempt to discredit Tesla's work). From passionate competition to vindictive sniping, these rivalries prove that the world of science is far from cold and methodical.

Book Family Feuds

  • Author : Eileen Hunt Botting
  • Publisher : State University of New York Press
  • Release : 2012-02-01
  • ISBN : 0791482030
  • Pages : 268 pages

Download or read book Family Feuds written by Eileen Hunt Botting and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Family Feuds is the first sustained comparative study of the place of the family in the political thought of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Edmund Burke, and Mary Wollstonecraft. Eileen Hunt Botting argues that Wollstonecraft recognized both Rousseau's and Burke's influential stature in late eighteenth-century debates about the family. Wollstonecraft critically identified them as philosophical and political partners in the defense of the patriarchal structure of the family, yet she used Rousseau's conceptions of childhood education and maternal empowerment and Burke's understanding of the family as the affective basis for political socialization as a theoretical foundation for her own egalitarian vision of the family. It is this ideal of the egalitarian family, Botting contends, that is one of the most important yet least appreciated legacies of Enlightenment political thought.

Book Mark Twain in China

Download or read book Mark Twain in China written by Selina Lai-Henderson and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2015-05-13 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mark Twain (Samuel Langhorne Clemens, 1835–1910) has had an intriguing relationship with China that is not as widely known as it should be. Although he never visited the country, he played a significant role in speaking for the Chinese people both at home and abroad. After his death, his Chinese adventures did not come to an end, for his body of works continued to travel through China in translation throughout the twentieth century. Were Twain alive today, he would be elated to know that he is widely studied and admired there, and that Adventures of Huckleberry Finn alone has gone through no less than ninety different Chinese translations, traversing China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Looking at Twain in various Chinese contexts—his response to events involving the American Chinese community and to the Chinese across the Pacific, his posthumous journey through translation, and China's reception of the author and his work, Mark Twain in China points to the repercussions of Twain in a global theater. It highlights the cultural specificity of concepts such as "race," "nation," and "empire," and helps us rethink their alternative legacies in countries with dramatically different racial and cultural dynamics from the United States.
