Book The Missions and Missionaries of California Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Missions and Missionaries of California Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Zephyrin Engelhardt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 792 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Missions and Missionaries of California, Vol. 2 The field covered by this work has proved so vast that it was found necessary to treat what is of general interest separately from that which is of but local concern in order to avoid confusion and endless repetitions. The result is the division into General and Local History. The General Ac count fills this and the next two volumes. The Local History with the biographical notes on all the missionaries will require two more volumes. Although great pains have been taken to insure accuracy, it is quite possible that errors have crept into the narrative. We are but human. If kindly pointed out, whatever may be amiss will be corrected at the first opportunity. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book California and Its Missions Vol 2 of 2

Download or read book California and Its Missions Vol 2 of 2 written by Bryan James Clinch and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from California and Its Missions, Vol. 2 of 2: Their History to the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo He organized the department at San Blas with equal diligence. The salaries and supplies, and the sources from which the necessary funds were to be drawn, were personally arranged by Galvez with all the exactness of a modern municipal budget. His methods were new in Mexico, but the despotic energy of the Visitor made them be observed punctually. He made no scruple about using the capital of the Pious Fund for the expenses of the first expedition. The surplus in the hands of the last Jesuit procurator and the stores in the magazine at Loretto amounted to nearly two hundred thousand dollars, and were all employed in building the ships and furnishing supplies for the royal expedition. Galvez was strict in the matter of economy. He reduced the pay hitherto al lowed by the treasury to soldiers on California service, and he made up the church furniture and altar linen for the new missions by borrowing from those already founded on the peninsula. Father Palou incidentally mentions that many of the latter were almost worn out when sent. In vindication of his colleagues against the insinuations of Sergeant Barri on this head, the worthy Franciscan appealed to the wife of a Spanish sergeant, who had to mend, wash and iron the albs and altar linen before they could be shipped to Monterey. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through a fascinating discussion of religion's role in the rhetoric of American civilizing empire, The Imperial Church undertakes an exploration of how Catholic mission histories served as a useful reference for Americans narrating US settler colonialism on the North American continent and seeking to extend military, political, and cultural power around the world. Katherine D. Moran traces historical celebrations of Catholic missionary histories in the upper Midwest, Southern California, and the US colonial Philippines to demonstrate the improbable centrality of the Catholic missions to ostensibly Protestant imperial endeavors. Moran shows that, as the United States built its continental and global dominion and an empire of production and commerce in the Gilded Age and Progressive Era, Protestant and Catholic Americans began to celebrate Catholic imperial pasts. She demonstrates that American Protestants joined their Catholic compatriots in speaking with admiration about historical Catholic missionaries: the Jesuit Jacques Marquette in the Midwest, the Franciscan Junípero Serra in Southern California, and the Spanish friars in the Philippines. Comparing them favorably to the Puritans, Pilgrims, and the American Revolutionary generation, commemorators drew these missionaries into a cross-confessional pantheon of US national and imperial founding fathers. In the process, they cast Catholic missionaries as gentle and effective agents of conquest, uplift, and economic growth, arguing that they could serve as both origins and models for an American civilizing empire. The Imperial Church connects Catholic history and the history of US empire by demonstrating that the religious dimensions of American imperial rhetoric have been as cross-confessional as the imperial nation itself.
