Book Macnamara s Irish Colony and the United States Taking of California in 1846

Download or read book Macnamara s Irish Colony and the United States Taking of California in 1846 written by John Fox and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2000 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Images of Irish immigration often bring to mind Ellis Island and crowded Eastern ports. If Eugene Macnamara's planned Irish Colony in California had succeeded, however, we might have a very different view of the Irish in America. In 1844, Eugene Macnamara, an Irish priest with a shadowy history, began promoting his plan to create an Irish colony in California. With the first of the Potato Famines a year later, many Irish farmers had to seek a new life, and California seemed to be the answer. In both Washington and Mexico, Macnamara and his plan were viewed as suspicious, even dangerous, yet once the U.S. war with Mexico gained California for the United States, the priest and his plan were largely forgotten. Both period documents and new discoveries are used to flesh out the story of the California colonization project and the mysterious figure behind it. With illustrations, maps, and index, this book is a valuable resource for understanding American, Mexican, and Irish history--and a fascinating glimpse of the ways in which the past might have been different.

Download or read book El Proyecto Macnamara written by John Fox and published by Merrion Press. This book was released on 2014-06-18 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of Eugene Macnamara, a maverick young priest from Ennis, County Clare who sought to establish a colony for Irish families in the 1840s in Alta California, Mexico s far north-western territory. Had the 10,000 ready volunteers from Limerick, Clare and Cork of whom he boasted, actually arrived, a New Ennis , New Clare or New Ireland could have been born. His scheme failed when the US seized California in 1846. Macnamara life spanned half the globe and was dramatic: expulsion from a Paris seminary, a dash to Rome from Guiana to expose a convulsing mission, a year in revolutionary Mexico, two months in threatened California (backed by the Royal Navy) and asylum in Mexico City during the Mexican War, 1846-8. He followed it all with a Macnamara Scheme II in Chile. His arrival in Mexico, 1844, was at a time of tension between North America s landlords, Mexico, the US and Britain. His 1846 licence to settle 20,000 square miles with 15,000 settlers, was formalised by Mexico in 1847 and even qualified for a US hearing in 1852, but it was not appealed. British diplomats, merchants and bondholders supported him. When US President Polk learned of El Proyecto Macnamara he acted immediately to stop any British colonising in North America. In Washington, Macnamara personified at the highest levels a political and commercial conspiracy between Britain and Mexico against the US. This biography is the compelling story of this international Irishman and his lingering aftermath.

Book Mercury and the Making of California

Download or read book Mercury and the Making of California written by Andrew Scott Johnston and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2013-09-15 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the development of California and the relationship between the built environments of the mercury-mining industry and the emerging ethnic identities and communities in California, Mercury and the Making of California brings mercury to its rightful place alongside gold and silver in their defining roles in the development of the American West. In this pioneering study, Andrew Johnston examines the history of California’s mercury-mining industry—and its defining role in the development of the American West. Mercury was crucial to refining gold and silver; therefore, its production and use were vital to creating and securing power and wealth in the west. The first industrialized mining in California, mercury mining had its own particular organization and structure shaped by powers first formed within the Spanish Empire, transformed by British imperial ambitions, and manipulated by groups made wealthy and powerful by controlling it. In addition, the landscapes of work and camp and the relations among the many groups—Mexicans, Chileans, Spanish, British, Irish, Cornish, American, and Chinese—throughout the industry’s history illustrate the complex history of race and ethnicity in the American West. Combining rich documentary sources with a close examination of the existing physical landscape, Andrew Johnston explores both the detail of everyday work and life in the mines and the larger economic and social structures in which mercury mining was enmeshed, revealing the significance of mercury mining to Western history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work, by William Douglass (who helped initiate the Basque Studies Program at the University of Nevada, Reno) and Jon Bilbao (author of several Basque reference works), is the most accessible overview of the Basque diaspora in the Western Hemisphere. Amerikanuak is a pioneering study of one of the American West’s most important ethnic minorities, an engaging, comprehensive survey of Basque migration and settlement in the Americas, and an essential introduction to the history of the Basque people and their five centuries of involvement in the New World. Research for the book took the authors through ten states of the American West, Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, and Venezuela as they traced the exploits of Basque whalers in the medieval Atlantic, the Basque conquistadors, missionaries, colonists, and sheepherders who formed a dramatic part of the history of Spanish America. They also follow the story of the Basques back to their mysterious origins in prehistory to provide background for understanding the Basques’ character and their homeland in the Pyrenean mountains and seacoasts between France and Spain. This is a revised and updated edition of the original 1975 publication. New preface by William A. Douglass.
