Book excerpt: A hypothetical non-luminous existence of matter is known as dark matter, inferred by the convincing collection of astrophysical and cosmological indirect evidence. In spite of compelling indirect observations, the physical nature of dark matter remains one of the most profound questions in the field of modern physics. A Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP) is historically the most favored candidate particle for dark matter, which could nicely explain the observed indirect measurements with the direct detection of WIMPs for the first time. The new second-generation direct detection dark matter experiment LZ (LUXZEPLIN), designed for direct detection of WIMP dark matter, has performed the most sensitive search for spin-independent WIMP-nucleon interactions. LZ is located 4850 feet underground at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead, South Dakota, USA. LZ is employing a two-phase xenon detector with an active mass of 7 tonnes. With LZ we have recently managed in the summer of 2022 to provide the most rigorous exclusion limit for spin-independent WIMP-nucleon scattering with an upper limit on the cross-section of 6.5×10−48 cm2 (90 % confidence level) for a WIMP mass of 30 GeV/c2 . The first WIMP search result of LZ utilizes a fiducial mass of 5.5 tonnes of liquid xenon and an exposure time of 60 live days. WIMPs could interact in the cryogenic liquid xenon of the detector’s core by scattering off xenon nuclei, which would then recoil and produce both scintillation light and electric charge. The ratio of the immediately detected scintillation light (S1) and the delayed charge detection (S2) is characteristic for such a nuclear recoil (NR) from hypothesized dark matter, e.g. a WIMP, and differs significantly from an electron recoil (ER) produced by undesired background reactions. However, the precise knowledge of the energy-dependent ratio S1/S2, for which the ER-dominated regime transitions into the NR-dominated regime, is key hereby to separate WIMP dark matter signals from unwanted background signals. We performed calibrations with neutron sources to map out the NR signal region for the WIMP search. Instead, gamma- and beta-ray calibration sources were utilized to map out the ER region, characteristic for background signals to be discriminated against. In this thesis, the calibration data to map out the NR signal region has been extensively studied and compared to the results of a full LZ detector simulation. In addition, another crucial detector calibration, for which all LZ data has to be corrected, is the purity monitoring of the liquid xenon. The chemical purity determines the lifetime of signal electrons against the absorption on impurities during their drift within the liquid xenon time projection chamber of the LZ detector. This electron lifetime analysis has been performed on a daily basis within the framework of this thesis and results have been applied by every data evaluator within the large LZ collaboration and for obtaining the current world’s best exclusion limit on WIMP dark matter.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The DARWIN project intends to employ a 40 t liquid xenon time projection chamber in order to fully probe the experimentally accessible parameter space for the direct detection of WIMP dark matter, which will be eventually limited by coherent neutrino interactions with atomic nuclei. Novel xenon detector technologies with a potential application in DARWIN are developed using the XeBRA R&D platform at the University of Freiburg. It is currently equipped with a fully functional baseline detector consisting of a small-scale dual-phase time projection chamber following the well-established detection scheme of the XENON experiments which is meant to provide a benchmark for comparison with the new technological approaches. In this thesis, GEANT4 Monte Carlo simulations of the current XeBRA detector and potential modifications thereof, such as a single-phase implementation, will be presented. At this, a special focus is put on the examination of the optical detector properties and response, culminating in the development of improved algorithms with sub-millimeter precision for the reconstruction of the interaction positions inside the detector. Furthermore, methods for the detector calibration with the aid of different radioactive samples are assessed. The results of these investigations are finally compared to real data from the first comprehensive measurement campaign of the current detector setup

Book excerpt: This thesis concerns measurements I performed on photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) and lenses to be used in the Cubic Meter Dark Matter Time Projection Chamber (DMTPC) experiment. DMTPC is a new generation of detector, which takes the idea of a standard time projection chamber and adds in some additional optical elements, such as CCDs and PMTs. The goal of DMTPC is the directional detection of the dark matter. During the course of my measurements, I characterized both the absolute gains of DMTPC's eight PMTs, as well as the dark currents exhibited by each of the PMTs. Seven of the eight PMTs demonstrated gains on the order of 10^6-10^7, and one PMT did not function at all. Of the seven working PMTs, six of them had dark currents under 10 kHz, and one had an excessively high dark current over 10 kHz. These gain values for the PMTs will give DMTPC the means to measure the Z dimensions of the particle tracks it intends to image, and thus when combined with the information from the CCDs will allow for full track reconstruction. DMTPC will use lenses on their CCD cameras, and I also measured the transparency of these lenses, and discovered that they are opaque below approximately 350nm. These measurements will be essential for DMTPC, because they will provide information about the relative amounts of light the PMTs and CCDs on the detector will register, and thus provide key information for track reconstruction.

Interactions occurring in their active volume generate scintillation signals observable by arrays of photomultiplier tubes. In this thesis, a setup was designed and constructed which allows performing a single photoelectron calibration of these photomultipliers utilizing pulsed light from a light-emitting diode transmitted via optical fibers. The modular design of this calibration setup facilitates both, the regulation of the pulse voltage and geometric effects in the course of the light's coupling into the fiber, to attenuate the light illuminating the photomultiplier to the single photoelectron level. Test measurements with a Hamamatsu R11410-21 photomultiplier at room temperature yielded parameters that were found to be consistent with the specifications provided by the manufacturer. It is shown that the selected technical implementations enable the adjustment of a light level and a pulse width suitable for an operation at the targeted single photoelectron event probability of approximately 10%

Substantial experimental efforts are presently dedicated to improve our knowledge on neutrino properties as, in fact, we don't know yet some of the basic ones. Although very significant steps forward have been done, neutrino masses and mixings still remain largely unknown and constitute an important field for future research. Are neutrinos Majorana or Dirac particles? Have they a magnetic moment? Historically, studies on weak processes and, therefore, on neutrino physics, provided first the Fermi theory of weak interactions and then the V-A theory. Finally, the observation of weak neutral currents provided the first experimental evidence for unification of weak and electromagnetic interactions by the so called "Standard Model' of elementary particles. In addition to the results obtained from the measurement of the solar neutrino flux, the study of atmospheric neutrinos strongly supports the hypothesis of neutrino oscillation among different flavours. At the same time, the detection of neutrinos emitted by our Sun gave an important confirmation that the Sun produces energy via a chain of nuclear reactions; in particular in our Sun a specific cycle - the hydrogen cycle - is responsible for practically all the produced energy.
