Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ford County Soils T IS A matter of common observation that soils vary tremem dously in their productive power, depending upon their physical condition, their chemical composition, and their biological activities. For the most advantageous utilization of the land a definite knowledge of the existing kinds or types of soil is a first essential, and for any comprehensive plans for the improvement and the maintenance of our agricultural soils this knowledge is likewise necessary. It is the pur pose oi a soil survey to classify the various kinds of soil of a given area in such a manner as to permit definite characterization for de scription and for mapping. With the information that such a survey affords, every farmer or landowner of the surveyed area has at hand the basis for a rational system of improvement of his land. At the same time the Experiment Station is furnished an inventory of the soils of the state upon which intelligently to base plans for those funda mental investigations so necessary for solving the problems of practical soil improvement. This county Soil report is one of a series reporting the results of the soil survey which, when completed, will cover the state of Illinois. Each county report is intended to be as nearly complete in itself as it is practicable to make it, even at the expense of some repetition. From its treasury it has been estimated1 that we drew last year (1909) more than and its possibilities are as yet only partially realized. There are still in this country millions of acres which have never felt the plow, while those which are now under cultivation can, by the application of scientific principles, be made to produce many times the present value of their products. How to use and not abuse this great resource is the most important problem which faces the farmer of to-day - one worthy of the best efforts of our most pro found and learned scientists; for upon its solution depends the future prosperity of the nation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Red Clay Soil of Porto Rico In 1902 the Bureau of Soils made a soil survey of a strip of country 10 miles wide extending from Arecibo to Ponce.1 Within this area 19 different types of soil were encountered, and this by no means embraces all the soil types, that occur on the island. One Of the chief types in respect to area, though not in fertility, is the red. Clay soil which is classified by the Bureau of Soils as Adjuntas clay. During the last six years considerable experimental and analytical work concerning the nature and treatment of this red clay soil has been carried on. The experiments are being continued, but inas much as such work is never really closed, it has seemed. Advisable to publish the results obtained thus far, with the idea that although they do not definitely answer all questions that may arise concerning this soil, they should aid in its more intelligent and profitable treat ment.
