Book Calendar of the Plymouth Municipal Records Classic Reprint

Download or read book Calendar of the Plymouth Municipal Records Classic Reprint written by R. N. Worth and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Calendar of the Plymouth Municipal Records This volume, prepared under the instruction of the Corporation of Plymouth, contains a List and Calendar of the Muniments of the Borough from the earliest period preserved, down to the passing of the Municipal Reform Act. The classification and arrangement adopted will, it is believed, make reference easy. The descriptions and abstracts in the Calendar, it is hoped, set fully forth the character of the material, and the nature of the information contained. The archives of Plymouth were almost unrivalled in the provinces as illustrations of the national life in some of its grander epochs. The reputation of the port in the Edwardian French wars, and the fact that it was the leading maritime town in 'the spacious days of Great Elizabeth, ' sufficiently indicate this. The very importance of the town has been one of the chief causes of the loss of records that would now be almost invaluable. When Plymouth was incorporated by Act of Parliament under Henry VI., there must have been in existence a body of municipal and other muniments of importance, for not only was there a municipal governing body in being, but various guilds. Only one original document prior to that date, however, remains. So with regard to the corporation created by Henry. There is hardly an original paper or parchment dating before 1486. But in that year commence the accounts of the Receivers or Treasurers, which are practically complete to the present day: what had. long been a 'missing link' having been supplied in 1881 by the I discovery of the volume covering the period between 1570 and 1658, among the muniments of the Morshead family at Widey Court. There are some other accounts of the end of the fifteenth century, chiefly relating to the church of St. Andrew; but the most valuable chronicles of this period are to be found i in a volume kept as a kind of commonplace or day book for the entry of miscellaneous matters. Book Dramatic Texts and Records of Britain

Download or read book Dramatic Texts and Records of Britain written by Ian Lancashire and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1984-08-02 with total page 738 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1800 entries this valuable reference work covers texts and records of dramatic activity for about 400 sites in Britain from Roman times to 1558. Grouped in sections - texts listed chronologically; Records of England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, and Other, classified by county, site, and date; and doubtful texts and records - the entries summarize the contents of each record and give bibliographic information. Professor Lancashire presents a comprehensive survey of almost every type of literary and historical record, document, and work: civic, church, guild, monastic, and royal court minutes and financial accounts; national records - Chancery, Parliament, Privy Council, Exchequer; royal proclamations; wills; local court rolls; jest-books, poems, prose treatises, sermons; archaeological remains, artifacts, illustrations. He brings together works in several normally unrelated fields: Roman theatre in Britain; medieval drama as such, including the Corpus Christi play and the moral play; court revels of the Tudors, and of their predecessors in England and Scotland; and finally Latin and Greek drama as played in Oxford and Cambridge colleges. An introduction outlines the history of early drama in Britain. Appendixes include indexes of about 335 towns or patrons with travelling players, complete with rough itineraries; about 180 playwrights; and about 320 playing places and buildings. There are illustrations, four maps, and a large general subject and name index.

Book From Reformation to Improvement

Download or read book From Reformation to Improvement written by Paul Slack and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 1998-09-24 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between the early sixteenth and the early eighteenth centuries, the character of English social policy and social welfare changed fundamentally. Aspirations for wholesale reformation were replaced by more specific schemes for improvement. Paul Slack's analysis of this decisive shift of focus, derived from his 1995 Ford Lectures, examines its intellectual and political roots. He describes the policies and rhetoric of the commonwealthsmen, godly magistrates, Stuart monarchs, Interregnum projectors, and early Hanoverian philanthropists, and the institutions — notably hospitals and workhouses - which they created or reformed. In a series of thematic chapters, each linked to a chronological period, he brings together what might seem to have been disparate notions and activities, and shows that they expressed a sequence of coherent approaches towards public welfare. The result is a strikingly original study, which throws fresh light on the formation of civic consciousness and the emergence of a civil society in early modern England.

Book Studies on the History of Papermaking in Britain

Download or read book Studies on the History of Papermaking in Britain written by Alfred H. Shorter and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-08-07 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The late A.H. Shorter is widely acknowledged for his pioneering work on the history of the British paper-making industry, and his books continue to provide the basis for further research. The present volume brings together all his many articles, hitherto scattered across a variety of specialist publications and often virtually inaccessible. In these studies Dr Shorter tackled the subject with a broader scope than was possible in his books; in particular, they cover the period after 1800, tracing the changing geographical pattern of the industry. They also contain a wealth of detailed information on papermaking across Britain, notably in the counties of southwest England, that is impossible to find elsewhere, and is now made accessible through the comprehensive indexes to the volume.
