Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Calendar of the Gods in China, 1916 This Calendar of the Chinese gods was prepared during an enforced absence in Japan in the summer of 1900. But owing to the pressure of other duties it was not published, as I wished to improve it. However, the pressure of other business continued. Therefore, though imperfect, its publication may save others from going needlessly over the same ground, and may be of some aid to a right attitude towards the millions who now worship many gods, because they have not an opportunity of knowing anything better. So I send it forth. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Gods Goddesses of Ancient China

Download or read book Gods Goddesses of Ancient China written by Trenton Campbell and published by Encyclopaedia Britannica. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 161 pages. Book excerpt: This authoritative volume examines the two main faiths, Confucianism and Daoism, that developed before China had meaningful contact with the rest of the world. Aspects of Buddhism later joined features of these faiths to form elements of Chinese ideology and, with the beliefs in immortals and the worship of ancestors, they led to a popular religion. The narrative describes the gods and goddesses that dominated China's mythology and folk culture, roughly from the 3rd millennium to 221 BCE, including the Baxian (Eight Immortals), Chang'e (moon goddess), Guandi (god of war), the Men Shen (door spirits), and Pan Gu (first man).

Download or read book The Chinese Myths written by Tao Tao Liu and published by Thames & Hudson. This book was released on 2022-11-03 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a concise and entertaining guide to the complex tradition of Chinese mythology. While many around the world are familiar with some aspects of Chinese myth through Chinese New Year festivities or the classic adventures of the Monkey King in Journey to the West few outside of China understand the richness of Chinese mythology, influenced by Daoism, Buddhism and Confucianism. Offering much more than any competing overview of Chinese mythology, The Chinese Myths not only retells the ancient stories but also considers their place within the patterns of Chinese religions, culture and history. Tao Tao Liu introduces us to an intriguing cast of gods, goddesses, dragons and monks, including: the ancient hero, Yi the Archer, who shot suns out of the sky to save humanity from a drought; Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy and Compassion, to whom there are temples dedicated all over East Asia; and Madame White Snake, a water snake spirit in the guise of a mysterious widow, her story adapted into countless films and operas. This book is for anyone interested in China, as knowing its myths allows readers to understand and appreciate its culture in a new light.
